I'm sorry but "at times" that made me laugh so hard. Try all the time. Even when people are trying to have a meaningful conversation or help someone else there is all the spam overlaid on top of it. And overdoing it is apparently the foundation on IRC. Its always overdone. Hence why I don't go on anymore because people always over do it and end up pissing me off.
You speak as if you've never spammed before. It was you who made the Yawn button, and abused the hell out of it :p It was also you that I had to mute to stop the very large queue of spam from coming in when you were "protesting" SRL being down.
Also, you just said yourself that you don't visit the IRC anymore. Who are you to talk about what it's like? People do get help when they need it. As Bullzeye said, it may not be right away, but they do get it. Lately, I've been trying to be as helpful as I can, but I simply don't do SCAR/SRL anymore, so I can only relay what I remember.
IRC is about idle chatter. Not all the time will every conversation be about programming. It deviates a lot. Some spamish, but it's still fun.
(Note: If we do decide to go VOIP, may I be the second to recommend Teamspeak instead of Ventrilo? Only because a lot of the community, myself included, prefer Linux as opposed to Windows. The Ventrilo team refuse to release a Ventrilo client for Linux. Teamspeak is for both.)
