The Deleted Skill: Scamming

Ah, scamming, who here can reminisce with me the memories of ripping dumb people off? I'll never forget my epic plan that awarded me my first 5m.

About a year and a half ago when I heavily played on my main, I thought of an excellent 2-man strategy for a scam: The Trust Game. Here's how it works: you went into a populated trade world (usually 1, 2, 3) and spam "free 5 mil gold follow!" or something along that lines (you'll get people following you). Once you get enough, you go upstairs in a small building, and once everyone follows, you explain to them the Trust Game, which is simply this: you start the bidding at 5k, and what they must do is give you an amount greater than that to raise it! Once they do, you announce the new amount, give it back, and trade with the next person! If they ask to see the 5 mil beforehand show it to em if you have that much.

Why is this a 2-man operation? Well, most people abandon this game instantly at the idea of losing their gold, and the few that stay behind will barely go over 200k. What this second person is supposed to do is when trading stalls and no one is going over the current bid, he "trades" you a higher amount, sometimes doubling it! This suprises people and catches them off-guard. "Whoa, it just went from 200k to 400k, this guy must be legit!" And so people will wager more, and eventually you simply log out when you get an amount that you like. Best time to leave would be before the amount hits 1 mil; that seemed to be the ending point for 99% of the people.

My brother and I made, in total, 13 mil, which we split.

I almost got scammed by the show inventory for 10k. You show you inventory and they put up 10k and accept and you'll forget to remove your items and accept.

Say "SELLING ALL YEWS!!" and then if their brightness was not set at Highest, the willow logs looked almost the same with the yews, so then they wouldn't check the uptext and hit accept = LOADS of free cash.

I never did it, but I got scammed like this once.

Buying some random stuff, first offer some e.g 500k, then add some random good stuff..like 2-3 lines, and before adding the last item, you select remove X coins, and put something like 49500, so 500k will turn into 5000 coins or something similar..and after you press enter you quickly add a item…so the trader sees new item appearing not coins going away…worked pretty well I scammed like 500k with this method, later got all that scammed with non trade method..

Yeah scamming is for losers, especially account and irl scamming..

I'v got scammed only once, power amulet, I was really dizzy then..Not a big loss, I think I had 10M+ those days..

Funny how most here posting are the targets. I never was caught off-guard, and I did a lot of trading (and was offered countless scams!). The best thing to do when someone does the "remove gold really fast to go from 500k to 50k" thing is let it sit there in the second "accept" window until THEY hit cancel. It makes them feel stupid (or so I believe :p).

I felt that my way of scamming, if it had a required level, would be around 90 :)

I remember the whip scam, where the scammer tells somebody that you want to take a picture of himself owning someone who has a whip (And maybe offers some money). So the victim banks all his/her items, except for the whip. Then you both go into wildy, the victim is told to turn his auto-retaliate off, and then when the victim is down to low HP, the scammer says 'woops, one sec, camera not working'. Meanwhile, he drops 3 dragon longswords or 3 mystic robe tops. The scammer just waits. When the items appear, the victim picks them up (who wouldn't pick up 3 dragon longswords off the ground?). The scammer then says 'Ok, fixed it', and finishes off what was left of the victim. The victim ends up dropping the whip, and not one of the dlongs (unless he uses protect item, but then the scammer could just be cautious and drop 4). This happened because dlongs/mystic robe tops were worth more at the general store than whips.

I'd heard about this before someone tried it on me, so along with the whip i brought tele runes. I would have collected 3 dlongs or 3 robe tops, but my mom started yelling at me for being on the comp too long as soon as we were about to go into the wildy :(

Lol, well I'd like to clear it up and point out you didn't think of it, so don't take credit for it. Early 2002 I would say "press 999 to join clan and get free armor!", then the rest of it was your "trust test". This guy I met told me about it and I'm sure he got it from someone else. That was the only time I tried scamming, the most I scammed was a black long I think, and i was pretty fucking ecstatic :) .

I remember like 2002-2003 when RS2 was in its first few months of release, (can't remember exact years) but I would go to places where there weren't many people. I would get talking to them just to pass time. Get to become friends with them. I was rich at the time so I would show them all my stuff after getting some of their trust, and Pm them saying "Jagex forgot to take out one of their mod cheats for the regular players when they released RS2, change your password to money, and hit alt+f4 and everything you have will be doubled!"

Oh how many people fell for that, in fact those accounts made up about half of my macroing army until I lost the excel sheet they were on…

But that was the only time to scam because I wanted a hell of a lot of accounts because RS just became popular at my school and pre leveled accounts were selling for big time real $.

Pretty interesting topic… I personally hate scammers. But this one time when i was like lvl 80 some noob came up to me and asked me to make them rune armour…. i only made 24k but it was halarious. This one time i got scammed really badly for about 2m+. One guy came to the flax picking fields when i did that for $ and he said "buying calquet keg". He then traded me and showed me like 15m cash and some other good items. I was like "I'll try and get u one". So some other guy came up and said "selling calquet keg" and i wanted it badly for the 15m cash. so i was like "ill buy it." and ended up giving all my armour for it without knowing it was only worth 1gp >.>

I fell for the RUNESCAPE BLOCKS YOUR PASS!! thing like 3 years ago, and lost a rune axe and 100k on one of my side accounts. Then I used that same scam to get a few accounts that I use for macroing now.

Im probably the seconds worst scammer to post here, the whole trojan bet me.
I made a website that looked like runescape,
Anyone want to be a mod?
They headed to my website, (secret mod forums)Nice url like Runescapemod.tk)
entered their username and pass, got sent to a false runescape invalid username and pass page.

I have a nice notepad with about 300 accounts.
I got soooooo much money from that!

My page even had that little flash box that flashes never enter your pass in anywhere but runescape.com :)

The worst thing about was that the invalid username and pass page had a link back to my page, just for confirmation. people sometimes typed in their password like 30 times.
