IRC issue with Abyssal

got this over PM

From: Abyssal
I sent this to Fakawi earlier:

Not sure if you're the person to contact, but…

Earlier today I joined the IRC and people were talking about illegally obtaining cigarettes, alcohol, drugs and doing them, how fun it is to use them, how great it is to drink and drive, all while being 15-ish.

Yes I took part in the conversation, against them, arguing and letting them know it was bad, etc, but there was a lot of criticization of personal viewpoints, and a lot of swearing from some people namely GoF`, EvilChicken, and JuKKa.

I don't know where this is going but it seems to be a very rude place if you like to hang out and talk about how twisted your life is… and how it is to be screwed up, etc.

Doesn't seem like a good thing to be having users be in, considering some of the users here are 12-16 and some of their minds are VERY impressionable.

I'd appreciate it if anything could possibly be done to make the IRC a more friendly place for younger people, as our community is not all 18+.

Thanks,
Abyssal

i think he's slightly exaggerating,
most of IRC is like this, like in #mopar where people threaten each other with DDOS, and Silver Lining recently killed him,

still though,
maybe his parents are watching? or he was raised oddly,

so I've brought it up with you people for advice,

in either case, this guy should go for a walk in 4chan

He is exaggerating. But still, I don't particularly like when people start talking about drugs, smoking, stealing, etc.. I think there should be some rules against it, but it doesn't bother me too much.

On one hand it's the Internet. On the other hand it is our community channel, which we should talk about SRL and not shit like how to obtain cigarettes illegally.. Not that I care, but maybe Abyssal does.. What's his age anyway?

I don't like it. It's destroying the image of SRL. I think we should implement rules in the IRC, otherwise don't call it official.

He's exaggerating, like Yakman says and I also have to agree with Ray.

..and with what Star said, then not call it official.
IMO the best thing to do is making major rules and, I don't know if it is already like this, dividing the IRC channel in groups or so.

The last thing I want to say is that it doesn't bother me at all:)

Lol, he should get over it. He's probably worried his mind will be corrupted and he will turn into one of those meth addicts you see in all those anti-drug propaganda adverts, lol. Cigarettes!! Oh the horror!!

I'm with Star. Official* = Rules.

*Having SRL in the name and any staff members involved counts too

Yeah. IRC is out of control. I admit I have lost myself there.
But it is having some negative effects on SRL right now, if not more negative than positive…

pfft. I think he should learn to deal with it. Its the internet. But sure, throw some rules into IRC if you want. Personally I enjoy talking about drugs etc…

Maybe implement a 16+ channel?

And Silver Lining killed himself?!

EDIT: This is coming only from a casual IRC user. I probably don't see alot…

Abyssal seemed worried. Maybe he speaks from own experience. I am unaware of the influence of IRC nor the level of comms, but I am somewhat disturbed, I must admit.
Keep the SRL-IRC channel clean.

Actually, so far #srl and #mopar are the only channels that I know which are like this, most channels I visit even use proper English…
Imo Abyssal's got a point, the IRC has no order at all, hence I don't go there anymore myself…

We should create a set of rules that should apply to every member including IRC staff and enforce them properly, because from experience I know IRC staff sometimes tend to bend the rules to their likings…

Well, he's been around for as long as I've been, so he's seen his own fair share of IRC terrors and I agree it's spinning out of control, though, when I last went there and pledged never to go back there again, it had probably not even reached this level…

I think Abyssal has a point. I don't care if people talk about drugs, but from experience of entering #mopar, I can see that the IRC channel is not well managed, people say stupid shit all the time and since they are not punished, it drives away everybody else.

People should talk about whatever they want. But threats of DDosing I have seen and random flame wars are just retarded but seem to happen on an hourly basis. Anyway, the channel probably just needs a few moderators.

I really think a few of you think it is much worse than it really is. Ron, I'm fairly sure you've never been in #srl, so I'll just let you know that it really isn't a bad environment. I've never seen any flame wars or threats of DDoSing. There is just quite a bit of spam (which I'll admit I do contribute to, but what else are we supposed to talk about?), but that's the only real problem. People get help when they need it. Maybe not instantly, but they get it. And besides, it's not like we've pledged to help anyone that joins. In my opinion, there doesn't need to be any restrictions as of yet except for the content that is being talked about.

I was bringing up #mopar lol and seeing how it is there and hearing from others that #srl is the same, drove me to never enter #srl. I was speculating and from reading the above comments, it sure seems it's just as bad as #mopar.

bullzeye95

2008-07-30 21:30:33

I think I can safely promise you that it's not nearly as bad. Like I said, I've never seen any fights at all. It's friendly, but just a bit spammish. Why don't you join and see? I have not talked to you (well, not through forums) in a very long time :)

I have to be on Abyssal's side on this one. I know it doesn't happen often, but it does happen. I am not a fan of it. I think it reflects poorly on SRL.
