Anything I should know about using torrents/rapidshare in the US? (I'm going there on vacation for a few days.) I'd rather not get arrested.

Also, anyone know any interesting / cool places I should look at while I'm in Nashville + Virginia and the surrounding area?

torrents get the file in pieces from multiple host to increase download efficiency w/o sucking 1 persons bandwidth to its maximum…so unless you only have 1 person that has more of the file than you do (ex: you have 50% and they have 90%), its kinda hard to tell where the file is coming from…ive used them for plenty of things, usually PS2 games (Initial D: Special Stage…only released in japan…yay for softmodded PS2!)

rapidshare is full of warez, some of which are keylogged (havent run across many, but 1 or 2), so my advice is to be very careful with what you dl from them…

idk anything a/b nashville…i live in NC :p

and by the way: the main problem with torrents is host…you cant download a file that nobody is hosting, so if you get all the way up to 99% and the people with 100% all stop hosting it…you wasted your time until someone with 100% gets back on…so i usually go by "if i need it, ill seed it" (seed = let other ppl dl it from you)

Basically same as us Canadians now… didn't you hear about the new legislation in Canada?? :( quite depressing….

Just loop it through tor and you will be fine.

ive never used a proxy to dl anything…mainly b/c it slows the dl speed drastically (from all my personal experiences it has)…not really sure why…could be poor proxy bandwidth…who knows, but either way i hate slow dl's so i just dont use 'em…and for the record: most proxys can be bypassed when running a trace…or atleast thats what a CCNP (cisco networking professional) in my area told me…

Yeah but Tor will slow them down a lot…. its not just a basic proxy its an onion network… and once they figure it out i doubt they will care to find you…. it will waste too much time.

Yeah:

their highly illegal

As long as you don't download obsessively you should be fine. And make sure that you don't let yourself become a host of the file

Also if you're in to history, check out Gettysburg, important city during Civil War times here in America ;)

Maybe you could also check out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame while you're in Nashville.

id just set the dl using azureus or w/e torrent program you use (i, personally, dont like limewire's torrent "abilities") and go on vacation and enjoy w/e you dl'd while you were gone when you get back…no worries really…unless your house is surrounded when you get back…

whats the difference in "illegal" and "highly illegal"? lol most things people host through torrents or rapidshare are warez anyway…not much "homebrew" stuff even though thats what they were meant for…but hey, thats how things go :p

enjoy your vacation! im out for the night!

later all,

If you're only here a few days then don't pirate anything :p. Do all of your stuff that would be illegal here where you live :).

Generally, no one cares about you downloading stuff. If you're uploading things, you become a prime target for our DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act or something) and businesses are allowed to sue you as they please. The best way to not get sued or arrested is to not make yourself worth being sued/arrested. Never download more than you need to really (I try to cap myself at $300 worth of stuff, maybe exceptions for Adobe) and never get anything from Microsoft other than Windows (preferably XP SP3 ;))

I don't know what's up with Canada's copyright laws recently so maybe it's just as bad there as it is here now thanks to our big business bullies. Or you could just get Linux ;).

-Don't seed. If u get caught…. well put ur head between ur legs and kiss you bum house car everything you own goodbye.
-Don't lend it out to all ur mates.
-If you don't use it delete or hide it on a dvd.
-Use a firewall to stop the program calling back to base.
-Dont tell people you got blah blah blah

If you're caught for warez in a few days then I'd just suggest you GTFO internet xP .. Some people I know have been dling warez for like 6 years or something almost non-stop and not caught :)

It's probably not the best thing, but for torrents you can use PeerGuardian - http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/

It blocks a list of other IPs from accessing your IP while you're downloading torrents.

How hard is it to get caught/ how to stop seeding?

bloodargon

I usually use Http://thepiratebay.org.

They are the shit. Basically, dont download anything excessively, and when your done, delete the proof.

I use BitTorrent (ironic, eh?) and the way to limit uploads is to right click the torrent your using, and go to Bandwith allocation, then uploads, and set it to 1 kb/s. This basically stops uploads. When your done downloading just delete it.

use http://www.demonoid.com/ :)

If anyone needs invite codes just PM me.

I'd recommend isohunt.com for the torrents, with utorrent for the program (it's MUCH faster than BitTorrent (the client)).
Although i havn't tried demonoid yet, isohunt tends to have more of whatever I've wanted than thepiratebay or btmon, and it tells how many seeds there are for a specific torrent.

also:
-don't seed for long. the quicker you get out, the less likely you are to get caught.
-for the same reason, I usually download only 1 at a time and set the bandwidth allocation to "high"
-DON'T POST A TORRENT! this is the most likely to get you in lots of trouble if you get caught.
-put it on a dvd/etc., then delete it off the computer (if you get caught, you can hide/break the dvd before they find it, whereas chances are your computer may be the first thing searched (also delete the .torrent itself)

EDIT: also, if you're staying at a hotel / etc., just don't download torrents. Only do it if you're at someone's house. (preferably yours, as your friends/family might get PO'ed if you get them arrested)

Re-EDIT: the reason for this is that hotels will DEFINATELY give your name to the cops if you get caught, and they would probably be angry/suspicious because of your huge downloads/uploads and many, many connections used by torrents.

Third EDIT!: also, if you have the choice, don't use one of these: http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs#United_States_of_America
(although my downloads w/ quest usually go at full speed, so… this might not be that reliable) (and i don't get why bellsouth is on there, as it doesn't say what's wrong with it)

Hehe the only site i use is Torrent Leech. You have to be invited there. So no chance of a cop going there and uploading something that would find you

I've been torrenting for about 3-4 years now, done a bit of it and haven't been caught *knocks on wood* I'm running Azureus and i use Piratebay.

Really, just don't be stupid with it.

Basically, if you're only here visiting you can download/upload fine. First thing you would get a letter from the MPAA if you lived here & they would say blah blah pay us money or court blah blah. Only a few people actually get arrested by cops.

Also: Site that has 10k members, closing & invite only once it hits 15k www.thetorrentsource.org
