I was actually sad to see it only mentioned once on the forums (search for it and you get only 3 topics with 2 being about something else). Anyway, with the recent release of the Creature Creator (both a free and paid version available) there seemed like no better time to spark interest. You can find info about it in most places and finding a good fansite that has links to the hundred or so videos from the years should peak your interest and the Creature Creator is available for download from the official Spore site (.com).
For those who are clueless, it's from Will Wright - maker of the Sims and Simcity ranges - and consists of various of RPG and strategy style gaming. It follows the evolution of a single-celled organism to a space faring race, with it consisting of a cell stage, creature stage, tribal stage, civilisation stage and lastly space stage, with each supporting a unique style of gameplay.
Cell stage: Tutorial style level that teaches you about the editors. Similar to a pacman style game except with more RPG elements
Creature stage: You control a creature you can build with the editor and much more alike to a RPG as you can choose to be a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore as well as a social creature, aggressive creature or somewhere in between!
Tribal stage: Much more of a RTS now with you controlling a group of your creatures as you turn them into a thriving tribe through war or allies. You can do various things such as fishing, farming animals and going out and killing animals for food and then trade it with other tribes or use it to attract more tribe members or buy new tribal buildings ranging from a new sleeping hut to drums to weapons.
Civilisation stage: Similar to the Civilization games with your creatures being your citizens. You get access to a lot more editors now and are able to design all of your vehicles how you want! You still have the option of being an economically driven city, a war mongering society or even a religious city at this point as you try to conquer the world through the appropriate routes. Eventually, you finish the stage by becoming advanced enough to build a UFO, which you can design, and your times war'ing with vehicles is over!
Space stage: an open ended style of game based around unlocking new UFO features. You can perform missions and form allies or go around destroying planets - it's up to you. You can also form colonies on planets or abduct your favourite beasties you come across and put them on your home planet. You can play an aggressive game now and attempt to conquer the massive galaxy through force or you can play it diplomatically and make strong allies. There is no one goal for the stage, but for fans of purpose, there is a race called the grobB at the center of the galaxy and is talked as the ultimate race of fearsome creatures that will test your UFO to its limits.
Anyway, with that done, feel free to discuss it! Release date is early September (7th) which is only 70 days away now!
