SRL Forums Slower!

SRL Forums have recently been slow for me since the Staff have down-graded their hosting package to a lower one, to keep the website alive. Today, i have experience several database errors and a lot of timing out. Also, for Australians (such as Zeph and I) are experiencing very slow loading times, when Zeph is using broadband and i am using a T3 connection. It also takes several minutes to post as-well.

Is there any possibility to delete all old members (that haven't logged in, in over about 2 months) and delete all old posts (especially in the Scripting Help section) and this would decrease loading times by far?

Also, just until things can get sorted out (money-wise) me and Nashi (Kevin Wolf) have decided to host SRL for free on Nashis' server. Here are some of the specifications:
  • 100gb HDD
  • 1000gb BandWidth
  • 8 Cores (CPUs')
  • Top ByetHost Premium Account
Hope we can help :D

Just thinking what would be more reliable for the members of this community :)

Yeah it does take ages and half of the SRL registered users are inactive.
I think that it might free up loads of space making SRL faster

It does, i'm on a premium account (since i had to upgrade from personal) and you get $0 sending balance unless you verify.

That most likely won't affect loading time's that much unless you go through the member list or search for all posts made in the forum. Database's work on text and number's mainly, so they're incredibly fast even with hundreds of thousands of info and the fact that it's index'ed makes it only faster (well it should be considering vBulletin is pretty good forum software), so all it will do is make the forums a little tidier. You just have to remember that setting a specified time will also remove important people (Dankness is an example who hasn't been on ages and would get removed if he weren't root admin) and would probably be more worthwhile just removing 0-posters / under 10 posters that hadn't been on in a month+ and only pruneless important forums or combining topics into an archive topic (such as the Scripting forum or BBQ pit).

Old forums + my old connection(356 kb(3 gb))
was even faster then
the new forums + my new conenction(1,2 mb download speed(10 gb))

The forum speed is just fine and it's very easy to prune inactive members…

Starting a new topic is deathly slow, but that has been like that since before we went down. Hmm, I know people don't like ads, but if we increase the amt we may be able to get a better bandwidth package. Or maybe we could use multiple servers grouped together, then we could split the load over the servers instead of it all being loaded onto one?

Maybe that has a purpose! That way thread-spammers will get butt-kicked if they wanne spam..

I highly doubt SRL forums will be moving out of the control of someone Fakawi would trust with his life.
It was a large move just to get it to Dankness.

Also we will not prune old members… especially if only inactive for 2 months…..

We have gone over this time and time again…. Pruning members is not an option.

Old threads… I have already started on that a month ago.

Hobbit is right. The server stays where it is now. There will be no pruning, never. There will be no purging either.

If you really want to help, please donate $$ to Dankness. He pays the bills. Dont pay him large amounts, any small donation is cool. Together we can keep your homepage running.

Ads generate more than you think ;)

Especially on a page load site like this. Not saying this is a godly popular site, but with the forum setup it makes many page loads, which in turn gets a lot of hits on the ads.

I'll see what I can do on getting a Paypal account. Hopefully I don't have to set it up with my credit card, as I hate using it on anything besides Online store purchases.

What about the majority of users using AdBlock?

Hobbit

We can add in a script like on sythe(?) or some other site i forget which.. that checks if you have adblock enabled and forces them to disable it before entering…

PvH

2008-07-02 03:01:15

@ Hobbit,
When I visit Sythe, I get the message, but I can do everything with adblock on.
Maybe, the devs could create an awsome flawless script for sale^^
Just a suggestion, but I admit that the chance that it will have succes is really low.

EDIT:
I just came on an idea.
Maybe we could have a script on srl.
You will need to click 10 ads a day if you visit srl.
If you don't you get a warning.
If you get a second warning = 1week bann.
This would be harsh, but clicking ads isn't that much work -.-

Trust & Co-operation? You've got to be joking :p With all these leechers around ;) But we would only destroy those leechers or lazy people that don't want to disable their AdBlock :) Which is good in some ways, except Mastaraymonds way since he is so lazy :p

Wrong. Star does bother a lot about the rest. (sometimes even too much) He has always been very helpful to noobies and pros alike and has written countless tuts and scripts and has been very patient throughout the years. Star is hardcore, Dan!

This community is really build around trust and co-operation; our SVN has reached revision 2000+! And observe the gentle tone of voice, the generally cheerful atmosphere and the positive ambience. This is truely what kept SRL alive. We have never had any trouble whatsoever with any of our friendly neighbours. In fact, all leaders, whether active or idle, are still and will always be instamemberized and are treated with respect even though our ideals and our goals are different. We set out on a path where kaitnieks left and have managed to remain in good ASCII harmony throughout the years.

We have all been leechers at a certain point. Its where we set of to learn. Some make it, most don't. But here at SRL I am still amazed at the endless amount of talent that keeps popping up, and the willingness of all the pros to help the talents out.

I am still in awe.

Well you created the whole atmosphere when it was a private community. And i think SRL starting out private has a huge effect in it. Through the smaller close knit community we were, we all helped eachother out and got to know eachother better. Then when SRL went public, the oldies and semi oldies(like me) brought the old helpful and cheers atmosphere along and passed it onto the new people so it keeps growing. It's like when someone yawns everyone else in the room yawns. Sometimes the community needs a kick in the butt to get back ontrack but we always do.
