SRL Archive - Discussions & Debates

This is a debate on how good Vista is (ups & downs), and see what you actually don't like about Vista, even though the majority of you haven't even tried it and giving it a bad review, such as: "Swich to Linux, It's Better". Why is it better? "Go back to XP". Why go back to XP? "Vista sucks so bad". Why does it suck so bad?

I have have Vista for two months now and it is working great. Better than Windows XP, Linux Ubuntu and Linux Debian (Yes, i have tried them all, except for Mac Os, used to have Macintosh, that was an old shitty one though).

So, since all of you are whining, provide your reasons here about why you hate Vista, other than it's made by Microsoft. Who cares about the company, it's the software that counts.

I do not want this topic to end up into a flaming or argumentative war. just provide your things, and Vista users can list the ups and downs of it, and if you have a problem with Vista such as: OMFG, It takes half the RAM, we could provide an explanation as to why it is doing that.

Happy debating :)

I hate vista because of 3 reasons:

1. You need to run as administrator so many times for so many things, screws scar up sometimes(maybe just for me).

2. It runs slower if you have many programs running.

3. Lots of things aren't compatible with vista yet…

I like vista because

1. It has way better graphics.

2. I just like it better :D

Vista
- Slow
- U can't hack
- programming is anoying
- lots of errors
- it is to defensive so it blocks itself
- lots of other stuff
- It is so badly compatable
+ Nice look

Windows
everything up there and more ;)

Windows xp + Vista inspirat = ownage.

Is Vista Inspirat that skin-like thing?

My friend has a skin on his XP that makes everything look like vista

I have Vista, previously had XP.

I like Vista, because saying otherwise would seem like i wasted my money.
Seriously though, it has nicer graphics, and seems to be faster with some things, and much much slower with others. Point given there are compatability issues right now, but i'm sure that will get better, I hope.

Also, this could be a bug in SCAR or with Vista, but after about 4 hours of autoing my SCAR always "Stops working"…

i bought my laptop with Vista a few months ago. i don't mind it at all.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition for the win.

I have a Vista comp and I do not like it….

– Resource hungry (1.5GB RAM, 3.0 GHz Processor and it runs 2x as slow as normal when running 1 Scar and 1 SMART)
– Glitches/Bugs (CD/DVD drive keeps disappearing, randomly crashes)
- Compatibility (A pain when looking for some small freeware tools, everything's for XP)
+ Looks nice
+ Search bar on everything

EDIT: @twistedvip - Turn User Account Control off for #1 :p

I've used it, the only thing I really liked was the interface.

I love Mac OSX, its pretty much linux except for a few differences, such as better driver support…

'cept its not free.

• As of this post I have 72 processes running, 72!

Ubuntu ftw!

1. Not really. You just need to set your permissions.
2. No it does not. You have probably installed and uninstalled many programs.
3. Like what things? I have gotten pretty much everything to work on Vista now.

Ubuntu ftw!

• Age of Empires II works for me. The Conquerors expansion as-well as the Age of Kings. I love that game.
• 72, that would be all the stuff you have installed. As a Vista only system would take 8 processes (Including Sidebar, Desktop Windows Management etc).

Ubuntu FTL (For-the-lose) ;)

BTW: Never seen you around here before. An old member returning (as i can see by your Longevity bar). And you have an Avatar too, as a Junior Member. Wow!

P.S: Welcome back.

Any more hatred things about Windows Vista?

Yes, Dan!!! Here, here! *bangs table*

I also have vista and would like to mirror everything Dan just said. I get so pissed off at people who have never even tried Vista having a go at it. They just hear other people say it sucks and go along with it.

(ForTheRecord: I have tried XP and Ubuntu and I PREFER VISTA!)

I think that people who post here should say what OSs (plural of OS? lol) they have tried so we know if your claims aren't totally unfounded.

Microsoft Vista FTW (… OK, well maybe not the Microsoft part, lol)

XP was such a great OS, but now they are discontinuing it :(.

i actually dont like the interface of vista. Theres not much i do like, that you cant already get in XP.

You can get skins :D But i wouldn't say they're discontinuing it, just the upgrades but support will still be there (look at Windows 2003). I'd say Service Pack 3 was the last release ;)

no, the only people that are still selling it as far as i know are dell, and they're stopping sometime at the end of the year i think?

They'rl still be OEM versions, if you want to buy those. They're way cheaper.

The people who keep saying Vista is great ("OMFG Bandwagon, stop believing Vista sux!") are in a bandwagon themselves, as there is always to sides in an argument like this…

The final verdict is that at least the earlier versions were completely terrible and unintuitive (intuitive is something that Vista claims to be). Later versions may be better.

I don't like vista because of the system hogging resources and the compatibility issues… other than that it's great

Vista is slow and buggy compared to other OS's. Also as about everyone has already said, it has a lot of compatibility issues. I know many people IRL who have tried it and hated it. Actually I know only one person who hasn't had trouble with it. Also I don't even like the way it looks, and windows isn't really a hackers OS so that doesn't matter.

I'll consider getting vista in a year or two incase Microsoft manages to make it less crappy in that time.

-yes of course, you can "hack" with a wooden spoon if you want, but vista and all windows OSes dont even have support for raw sockets,

-programming isnt the same on all computers, windows api is notorious for being hard-to-understand, unintuative and filled with old obseleted stuff,
you know how many times it says "this parameter is not used, kept for compatability reasons"

[QUOTE=Dan's The Man;420762]
other than it's made by Microsoft. Who cares about the company, it's the software that counts.

dont play this down as though its not important, the company created the software in its own image,
microsoft software is known for being built with features in mind, and doesnt really care too much if they have some bugs,
its not built with security, if you look at vista, a lot of its security stuff seems to be visual,

like moving files
"DO YOU WANT TO MOVE THIS FILE?" - yes - "SURE" - yes - "SURE" - yes - "FILE MOVED, PLEASE WAIT"

thats not security, thats just its waying of pretending its secure, by appearing to check everything,
other OSes dont need to show how secure they are, they are just secure without advertising it to its user,

the windows family of OSes are not made with proper computing in mind, they are made for the naive, rich user.

I know it's not the same on all computers, but on Windows it's pretty much. It uses the same basic out-line, but since Microsoft has tried to enhance this to make it better, it removed some of the old things out of scripts. But, there is and most likely always will be a support for software in Compatability Modes, which isn't that hard to set-up at all.

See, that's what i also don't like about some people. First off, is because when Windows XP was out, a lot of people were complaining about how crap the security was, so when Microsoft try to enhance it, everyone hates it.

True, that whats' makes' it the Personal Computer. Because it is meant for Home Users, but there are different OS packages which can be used as Business ones as-well.

Massive contradiction here,

[QUOTE=Dan's The Man;424414]
I know it's not the same on all computers,

also, even if you use the same compiler, its not the same,
i use GCC on linux, and i use GCC on windows,
in linux you write #include <unistd.h> at the top, in windows its <windows.h>

i think you'd need to read up to refresh your memory on how these things work,

if we're only talking about programming, any windows really fails, this is mostly true for languages that use the OS api, like c/c++ but languages like java dont depend on the OS so much,

if a c hacker tried to have a windows OS, it would be like ballet dancing wearing a body cast,
not only is win32 api very very bad, as we've discussed before,
windows dynamic libraries are poorly designed too, and can easily lead to DLL Hell

windows .exe files are also generally much larger then the same program compiled into a linux executable,
.exe are called a PE or Portable Executable, even though they are anything but

also the entire linux API is open source, and let me tell you an open source standard library is a massive advantage, you can easily see how the function works, and it helps a lot when you use it,

you're fighting a straw man here, and assuming i said its security was good,
it was written with security in mind, but it it was written to give the impression it is secure,

its like having border guards, but when you look closer, their guns are plastic,

linux and even all unix systems (including mac) were built from the bottom up to be secure,
programs cannot read or write to memory locations outside their page, and user account permissions are enforced

i heard somewhere that in windows vista, you can write shellcode to memory location 0x00007FFF (or something) and the kernel will execute it, instant root privages!

i dont know why you insist on buying a product for £100 when you could get a much better OS for free,

cuz its different and people dont like change. If i installed linux, then my whole family would be completely lost. Theres also the problem of compatibility. Im sure i could find the equivalent of most of my programs in linux (and more), but it would be a pain because of all the software that i already use. Though i guess i could use programs like WINE. but to the average user the change would be overwhelming and they wouldnt like it. QED they pay lots-o-money for crap :)(vista).

If you want to hack in Vista, use the trick to get into the SYSTEM account. (It's like Linux's root)

Start -> Run -> Type 'cmd'. In the window that appears, type 'at {One minute from now, in 24hr clock} cmd.exe'. Wait one minute, and then open up task manager and exit explorer.exe (You should see the desktop disappear) and in the OTHER window that appears (Its title should be {SYSTEM}/svchost.*) type explorer.exe (You should see the desktop reappear) and check the start menu, the usename should be SYSTEM. Just don't delete the C:/ drive…
