I've made an IRC channel for senior SRL members,
a place to talk about issues in private,
same server as the main #srl
channel: #ssrl
key: newkey42
a channel key is similar to a password,
to join, you would write /join #ssrl [key]
keep the key secret.
if it becomes discovered, tell me or someone powerful and we will change it, and edit here,
note: the channel is mode +s, meaning secret, so it doesnt show up on /whois or /list
I'm going to be encouraging people to have op powers there.
to give yourself op, type /msg ChanServ op #ssrl
to give yourself voice, type /msg ChanServ voice #ssrl

Added to my auto-join list, my nick is NiallC.

Why didn't we just set the access levels, no key?

/cs invite #ssrl
>ChanServ< invite #ssrl
* You have been invited to #ssrl by ChanServ (simmons.freenode.net)
-ChanServ- You have been invited to #ssrl.
/join #ssrl
* Now talking on #ssrl
I think something like that would work better, and you 'd have to be identified for that to work as well :)
So no more accidentally the keying

Then every ssrl member has to be on the access list.

Yes, what would make it easier would also be to make more people able to add them. :)
Just saying.

I'm an IRC noob, but if I understand correctly, access lists are good for small groups, and this is a relatively small group right?

I'd say so, yeah. We probably have around 20 users that actively come on #ssrl.

#srl-ops has an access list.
Works nicely.
Spams the chat screen when you do /cs access #srl-ops list, but works nicely.

#srl-ops isn't secret.
What's the difference? Can't you still have the secret flags?

The main problem that this would solve is when someone accidentally says the key in #srl and then we have to +i because the key is mode-locked :<. Also, donnt most of us have op flags as it is?

None of us have op flags in #ssrl (besides Wizzup, Yakman, and Raymond), but if you're talking about in #srl, there's quite a few of us who don't. In fact, I'd say almost half of us, if not more, don't have op flags in #srl (of those who visit often).

It isn't secret, it's just a channel for ops to talk about bans and such…

Not even close. There are 52 SSRL members in total and there are 12 ops in #srl.

Widget already addressed this. If you consider flags for all of us to be *!*@*, then so be it, but I do not.

Right, which is why I said half or more.

Well, I figured as much, but… is it really necessary? Probably not. It's just another redundant group that MUST be used because it is there.

Is it up to you to question the necessary-ness of the #srl-ops channel?
Why do you care?

Well, the people in it probably aren't questioning it.
It just so happens that when there's lots of groups and people get worried about "leaking" stuff it all seems. to… slow…. to…… a……… crawl……………
