New SRL Scripting Competition?

Sir R. M8gic1an

Just trying to get the ball running…it's been idle for quite a while, maybe start a new one? And this one will just get graded whenever starblaster has time to grade it?

From: Renax

hurry up wiz! i wanna start another competition.

maybe some Dev other than wizz/stb100 willing to start (and grade) a new competition? it would motivate some more scripting :)

See i was thinking about this the other day, and the problem I have is that I just don't have enough time to grade them extensively as I used to anymore.

I also had the idea of moving the Scripting Comp to members only to make that section more active once again, as people were complaining that it was dying slightly. What do you think?

My only predicament is that I need to find a new way to grade them. I don't want members to vote as it would just turn into a popularity contest, and I want them graded nicely with all comments as thats what the competition is all about.

So I ask, would SSRL + be willing to help me grade them? You all have the experience needed to do it. The only thing is it takes a bit of time to grade them all, as the competition is all about the comments. Tell me what you think.

I disagree with having the competitions SRL Members+ but I would be willing to help you grade them if the competition continues.

i wouldn't mind grading, my problem is when it would come to c0de's script etc, i'm not sure if i have the knowledge to grade a Dev's competition entry :p

i could try none the less :)

Well, I would still do the bulk of the work I suppose, I would just need your thoughts on each of the 7 points.

All of those polled together, + my own input should do the trick nicely, cut back on work for me, and speed the grading up a lot

I dont think members only is a good idea, as junior members like to compete against the SRL Members to see where they stack up. :)

Markus

2008-05-15 07:52:25

Leave it Jr. Membs, maybe we discover some new scripting talents :) And it's always fun for the Jr. Membs to see who can actually script :p
About the grading, if I join I won't grade, if I don't I am willing to help you :)

took the words right outta my mouth. i think it should go members+. members need one thing that jr. mems dont have.

The Claw

2008-05-15 08:35:43

a script comp is a communal thing which isnt really a priveledge to participate in…i agree that srl members need something jr members dont have, but the option to join a competition isnt really the thing we're looking for, in my opinion

I think the competition should be for everyone.
After I finish my final exams (approx 10 days) I might be willing to grade the games, although in my opinion Raymond has already won.

i had quite a nice idea today… (i think :p ) Fally Miner.

it has a lot of potential as a competition script, because people will go as far as they can.

some ideas of the top of my head:
– Mining in Guild
– Mining In Rimmington
– Mining in Crafting Guild
– Mining in Dwarf Caves (access next to the party room)
– Buying picks from nurmoth (or whatever his name is) in the Dwarf Caves
– Fixing your picks in the dwarf caves

would be nice to see people making one script for all of that. i'd definitely be interested to see who would go buy or fix their picks :)

btw: me helping to grade i was talking about the current competition, and if i don't join the next one, sure i'd love to help :p

Good scripts don't need pick axe fixing ;) But lol you pretty much described my new script except for the whole dwarven mine part (not talking about the guild).

Sure, but someone needs to set it up in the end. If SB100 says he hasn't got the time then I'd be willing to set it up.

Starblaster100

I have the time to set it up and run, its just when I used to grade the scripts, they took about 1 1/2 hours + each to do. 6 entries is usually the minimum, so thats already 9 hours of purely grading.

Thanks for the input, this is how it will continue:

  • I'll set the competitions up with requirements, allowed things, disallowed things etc. so as to keep it hidden, even from you guys, as some of you want to enter.
  • Competition will run
  • Whichever SSRL+ members didn't enter, are welcome to help me mark the script. I'll probably make a new category in SSRL section and create a new member group with permissions to view the forum will which will be changed each competition, so the SSRL+ who did enter cannot view who is winning etc.
  • We'll all mark the scripts, agree on the outcome / scores.
  • I'll post the winner.

I'll keep the competition open for everyone. We can think of another thing to give SRL members instead.

If everyone agrees to this, I'll start creating the forum / group etc. so we can all mark SC #3.

So… agree?

Sumilion

2008-05-15 11:28:55

So no votes on subject ? Agreed, but do make it a rs subject :p

Starblaster100

Well the point of the competition is to make people use all different elements of SCAR, and only allowing RS scripts limits this.

The game was supposed to be for canvases, but some people used forms instead which I didn't think of. :p

However, the next few will definitely be RS based. :)

Hobbit

2008-05-19 17:46:13

We need something original that has never been done… ever

Maybe for really advanced people a Castle Wars script…

Hmmmmm What about a Herblore script.

Goes down into the stronghold of security to the flesh eaters (then drop tons of herbs) then cleans them and makes pots…. but that involves memb account

Hmmmm What about a quest runner… they can pick any quest.

I'm getting kinda bored of all the original miners and cookers etc :p

Bobarkinator

2008-05-19 18:24:25

It should definitely be F2P. P2P makes it so some people can't participate.

Special Ed

2008-05-19 19:34:33

Super Complex: Does Tutorial Island and trains all F2P skills to "X"
Very Complex: Long / Hard Quest Runner (i.e. Dragon Slayer)
Complex: Anywhere Anything PowerSkiller (F2P)
Complex: Walking System that can walk to any bank in F2P RS from anywhere. (i.e. Webwalker Style).

Those are some interesting ideas, they're all quite hard IMO but IDK what you're looking for specifically.

2008-05-27 06:15:53

As for the script suggestions, I'd suggest an RS script that 'does something', like not a walker, but for example a powerminer (I failed the powerfisher pretty much :p )…

nielsie95

2008-05-27 09:31:21

I don't like the idea of a separate group for junior members.
I think another power-idea is good though. It will also get up the level of scripts in Free For All (I hope).

n3ss3s

2008-05-28 05:14:05

That's right btw, most likely the top 5 scripts (expecting over 10 people take part) would end up in the FFA :)

The Claw

brainwave - why not make the competition an auto responder? since these days, with people autoing on their mains more, we need better antiban and shit

n3ss3s

2008-05-28 13:30:20

Boring! =D

Nah, but really, there can be a few awesome "core" functions, but you have to admit, to create AI you have to really create one, the judges would just have a shitload of case and judge whose was the longest :(

Hobbit

2008-05-28 19:23:27

I think the claw has something… cause if they are going for who has the best and most complex to make it seem like its human… then they will go all out.
We'll get some pretty good stuff i think, more that just…

begin
if(Findtext('hi'))then
typesend('hi')
end.

The Claw

2008-05-29 02:52:42

yep it could turn out to be something really good. and then, maybe, put the winner's into srl? this would encourage the competitors to try harder, to try and get their name into srl. but if we decide to do this, we should remove the triggers and responses, so anyone who wants to use it has to customize their own words so we dont all get banned for saying the same words lol.

Yeah, so I might not be coming back to scripting much like I thought I was. My summer doesn't seem to be opening up as much and in a month I'll be back to life how it was while I was gone.

I still want to see the scripts from the last competition after they've been checked since I entered in it. Hopefully that won't be too long.
