Suggestion to improve quality of posting

Although you definitely have less spam than post-based sites such as ej.am (lol), there is still a massive list of 10-post members. Basically, I've used many of these post-4-stuff sites, and some of them have really cool strategies used to determine whether to reward the user privileges.

1. Make the reward system consider post length
Rather than making the system give out access after 10 posts and 1 week of membership, make the system based on the post length. This encourages less, more detailed posting. So a member can post 20 times to get access, or they can submit 10 very detailed posts.

2. Enable a sort of 'reputation' system.
Give the user access only after they have received a positive reputation gain. We can smite spammers and applaud uploaders. Spammers will be removed and the good people will be elevated to a godly status.

EDIT: OMG! Just realized there was a reputation system. A question: Does this reputation system affect our access privileges? I can't seem to find a "smite" button (The 'report post' button looks a bit moderator intensive).

3. Threshold per month
Requires the user to pass the required threshold per month. 'nuff said. (Used in conjunction with the above mentioned prevents useless posts)

4. OMG University
Add some sort of feature in SRL to check if the said user is actually 'botting'. If not, then they don't need the access. To regain the access, they need to load SRL and pass the forum threshold. Stops people from wasting bandwidth by downloading and never actually using the scripts.

That's most of what I've seen so far on forums like these - it seems to work well but posts tend to look extremely superficial (like my one, although looks can be deceiving.).

Sorry, but I agree only with the last one…(if any)
But some people may just enjoy the pleasure that the scripting brings, not actually botting.

The "Threshold" is already made, its the bar called "Today"
I think Reputation helps when applying for membership.

And most of the time, short posts can be more helpful (aka dot points) which gets straight to the point, instead of some long winded story

I guess that's true - I personally would like to try out scripting in SCAR rather than botting.

The "Today" bar doesn't seem to be limiting the number of Junior Members - what I was thinking of was that access to the forums should be regained by being active (i.e. writing scripts, testing out scripts, delivering results). The last point I mentioned might be invalid because of that…

I didn't know about reputation.

Sorry for not clarifying myself, but by "long posts", I meant posts which have substance rather than being something which looks like this:
yes i agree lolz
I'm not sure how you would go about programming that into the forums - but it would definitely stop leechers.

These are just ideas so it's fine to ignore them or to create derivations of them =)

SCAR is not a bot, mmkayh?

Back on topic… The way I see is that the whole "one week ten posts" thing was completely useless, as if someone isn't going to contribute they won't after 1 week and 10 posts either, they'll just wait until they've received the junior member status and then might complain if something isn't working but else they're quiet..

But why shouldn't we oh so hate these people and try to get rid of them? Well, look around the site, you should see some ads unless you've blocked them. Now what is the point of these ads? Dankness gets money from them to help pay for hosting.. So basically:

1. Alot of noobs and leeches.
2. ???
3. Profit.

Atleast as far as I know.

Now to the rep system… I don't like the idea much, why? Because there's already irritatingly much people going

"if jou lyk dis post den rep me plz!!!!11!!ONE!!"

Now if you promised these people priviledges from their rep you should guess what would happen.. They'd whine for rep even more and suddenly alot of other people would join in too. Not a nice idea..

Now let's combine this with your idea number 3. = Epic rep whoring to either get a higher status or keep the current status.. It'd just lead to more spam by people trying to get rep and that'd be even harder to moderate that people get decent rep and not just "gif me rep and i gif jou" than people spamming to the great 10 posts… So in the end this community would be ran by rep and that'd be just silly :p

Now the idea 4. It's a nice idea but not that great. Why? Well, not all people actually use scripts or play RS, atleast from SRL-Member to higher ranks there's alot of people that just script. So even though someone would contribute and just act well etc. he'd get kicked out because "We don't need you in our bandwith! Use scripts!"… Kind of a nazi system when you think about it.

Also that'd just lead to people lying that "oh my oh my i was in a vacation!", "i've been busy"… List goes on… So they'd get their status back. Wouldn't take long until SRL would get flooded by threads asking why they can't access what they used to, even though there'd be 10 000 threads already and the rules this would happen. Also alot of people would quit or lie.

Wow, long post there - I'm going to try to break it down :)

Sorry, still pretty new to all this (I called C++ a compiler, goes to show how messed up I am :p )

Although you bring up a valid point, there's a slight contradiction in what you said. You claim that after a member receives Junior Member status, they'll stay quiet. This is true. However, if ads provide the site with the majority of support - leechers are still inactive. This means although there are a large number of leechers, they will probably visit the site once in a month and "stay quiet" for the rest of the year.

So actually, this is in favor of the contribution-per-month. I can amend the suggestion to force a visit to the site per month, rather than posting per month. This actually causes leechers to visit the site more - generating more revenue for the site. See what I'm getting at? If the leecher does not meet this threshold, then he/she will be sent back as a Registered User, forcing them to meet the required number of posts.

Either way - it's a profit/profit system. Users are forced to visit the site more often, and inactive users are forced to contribute again to reaffirm their activity. The site generates more ad-views and more money is gained.

Yes, but in this case, the community has enough sense to de-repute the so called 'whiners'. But I guess you are right - the formation of little rings of 'noob-repping groups' could be a major flaw in the system.

A reputation system usually works well for a small community. On a larger scale, it may get out of hand. But I am not asking for a reputation threshold - rather a simple reputation 'check' by the moderators could determine whether the user is willing or not. Kind of like the process to become an SRL Member.

Again, feel free to scrap that idea - I don't think it could be modified to suit anything much…

Now the idea 4. It's a nice idea but not that great. Why? Well, not all people actually use scripts or play RS, atleast from SRL-Member to higher ranks there's alot of people that just script. That's true… I already thought Suggestion 4 was a bad idea when I wrote it. Perhaps the 'inactivity' status could be calculated from the number of posts you have, your activity on the forums, and your reputation? For example, a user with 5 posts, who has not posted for 3 months would be considered inactive (And thus would be required to post 10 more times), while a user with 100 posts can be inactive for at least 12 months before being declared inactive? Just a thought.

Don't we already have a program to detect inactivity….
I thought if you don't post for awhile your account gets banned

I doubt it. Following on from what Mylesmadness said - the member list is huge. Most of the accounts on here will probably never be logged onto again. A forum pruning would be… welcome.

You don't even have to look at the member list. Go into any random thread, and look at the average substance of a post. I guarantee it contains something vague like "yes i agree lolz i had that problem too".

Not meaning to be rude. But maybe build a reputation in the community before making ideas for major changes to the way SRL is run. In my opinion, it is run smoothly, and has a great detection system.

Did you even read the thread? This isn't about SRL - it's about the forums.

This is ironic - Here we are discussion methods to reduce spam, and you reply to the post without any idea about what we are saying.

The point of this thread is not to bitch about SRL, but it is to provide small ideas on the way the SRL-Forums are run. You can ignore it if you want - it's just an opinion. If I have to get a high reputation to express myself, you may as well turn off user registration.

Anyway, as I was saying - the forum has excellent moderation, so these suggestions are merely suggestions and nothing more.
