Don't ask for Rep++ rule?

Markus

2008-05-02 09:58:09

All those people asking for Rep are starting to get annoying imho, like every 5 posts you see someone "rep++ me plwxxxxx pl0x plz". How about a new rule "Don't ask for reputation"?. As Rep has no real meaning anymore, asking for it is useless too, except for wasting database space, CPU and bandwidth.

What do you guys think?

Bobarkinator

2008-05-02 11:32:57

Agreed.

Yakman

2008-05-02 12:41:08

yes, other communities with rep have the rule as well
also extends it to, you cant say you have given rep

basically, do not talk about rep

Special Ed

2008-05-02 12:49:48

Yea, Although I think the best solution to this would be to remove the rep system from the forum. That would solve all "rep-related" issues on the forum and also clear up server space if I understand this correctly.

IMO the best option would be to actually remove reputation from the forum. Second best having a system that will automatically disable reputation as soon as you join (Along with everyone else who is here). So that rep can't be used even if they wanted to, and the third best solution would be to just make a rule saying "Any talk about "Reputation" is un-allowed on these forums and will be treated as a serious offense" or something similar.

Dark_Sniper

2008-05-02 16:33:34

I agree with SE.

Disabling it would probably be the best idea though.

Markus

2008-05-02 16:38:34

Disabling would be useless I think. If not abused, the rep system is a great addition to the forum. Only asking for rep should be a warning/infractable offence.

Special Ed

2008-05-02 17:28:32

How is reputation beneficial? People randomly give out reputation to people who don't deserve it and then refuse to give rep to those who do. People also give rep to people who gave them rep just because that person gave them rep.

It doesn't tell you who is helpful to talk to or who knows what they're doing, it only tells you who is good at asking for rep and who talks to a lot of people. I honestly see no benefit in continuing to have reputation on the forum.

bullzeye95

2008-05-02 19:13:52

Finally, a topic about this. I absolutely agree. I think removing the whole thing is a bit far. Almost every forum has rep, right? An enforced rule would work fine.

Boreas

Hobbit

Well rep is still a good thing. Sure it isnt working like it should but still people are like "OMG YAY I got repped" especially the newer people. Like i remember when i from my masks tut, oh so long ago. When I was getting repped for it I was the happiest guy in the world.

And technically we already have that rule… just isn't well enforced…

Dark_Sniper

2008-05-03 03:06:14

you should enforce it a bit more then :p.

Disabling rep may work just as well, I mean it is quite senseless to have rep.
The rep does not grant the user anything nor should it.

On the other side giving rep does not have a negative affect ( not a big one ).
It boosts the person confidence and welcomes the user to the forum more in a sense.

I say its not hurting anyone if a person is asking for rep. It may be annoying, but its not harming anything ( unless it leads to the breaking of another rule :p ).

I'm kinda split on this one :p.

Or how about we only allow SSRL + to actually give rep points out? If someone else were to rep, then it would just be like a thankyou comment, no points would be added.

We could also reset rep before this occurs?

ZephyrsFury

2008-05-03 07:54:57

I think before we start restricting how we give rep I think we should actually make it have some value. I mean right now there is no point in rep. Only you can see your rep, you don't get anything from rep except another green box when you get 100+ rep.

I think we should make reputation visible to the public like how some other forums do it. This way when someone makes a post or advices someone on something, there is a way of rating how helpful or trustworthy this person is.

That would just give them another way to figure out who is and isn't SSRL

Dark_Sniper

2008-05-03 13:23:53

How would they know who repped them?
Your name does not show up when you rep someone.

I think Star has a great idea there.
I don't think reseting rep would be bad, but what about the people who did not ask for rep and gained it because they deserved it.

As it stands I'm in favor of stars plan up until the reseting of rep.
We could reset rep, but we could also not reset rep and still limit who gets to give out rep.

Starblaster100

2008-05-03 13:27:12

You can't see who has given you rep unless you are a Moderator or above, so if SSRL don't say "Great post, rep++", then the members would have no idea.

Ideas of what rep could mean (Considering only SSRL+ are allowed to give rep points out)

1)Auto promotion for JSRL to SRL.
2)Auto promotion for Registered users to JSRL.
3)If you get a certain amount of rep points, you get useful poster cup.

Of course, there could be other ideas, and we have to agree that this is a good course of action to take. Otherwise we could do one of the things Special Ed said.

EDIT: Dark_Sniper, very few people get rep legitimately on this site, i'm afraid. Most people (myself included) only get rep for posting scripts, which I do not think deserves rep. I think good functions, and useful posts deserves rep points.

Dark_Sniper

2008-05-03 14:59:16

Yes I see your point star.
I am fine with the rep being reset and SSRL and above are the only ones to give out rep.

Well I'm in favor of stars plan all the way.

Markus

2008-05-03 15:12:27

I like Star's idea, except for point three: The useful poster cup.
Someone could just post a shit load of crap *cough* n3ss3s in his old days *cough* (sorry n3s), then get like every 100 posts 1 rep point. If you post like 234294234 times, you still get 2342942 rep, although your posts are 99% crap.
If we want to give the cup automatically, it should be based on Rep/Postcount ratio, which isn't directly supported by VBulletin.

Starblaster100

2008-05-03 15:18:10

We would disable anyone below SSRL member being able to give rep, so the only people who decide if they get the cup or not is you guys.

Currently, the settings are something like:

Every registered member starts with 10 rep.
Only people who have 15+ rep can add to other people's rep.
For every 1000 posts you get, you get +1 rep power
for every year you are registered you get +1 rep power.

We would disable all of this and turn it into:

All members start with 0 rep.
All SSRL start with 10 (?)
For every 1000 posts, or year registered, you get no extra rep power.
Therefore, the only people who can give rep are SSRL.

The only flaw in the plan is if some SSRL member gives out unneccessary rep, but i can't see that happening.

King of Knives

2008-05-03 17:25:03

Star's plan seems best in my eyes.
But it has a few flaws.

EDIT: When I say SSRL, I usually mean "SSRL and above" (Admin, mod, dev - Da hood, you know).

I think we would get the best system by resetting and only giving SSRL or SRL-Members with over 15 rep the ability to hand it out.

Furthermore, SSRL should be able to see who gave rep to something to discuss the matter if there is disagreement. This will also prevent accidents with a person getting double-rep.

SSRL's should also be able to take back the rep they have given, if something is discovered (Example: Plagiarized guide/script) or they simply changed their mind.
Admins and mods should have full power to withdraw any rep given by SSRLs and SRL-Members with 15+ rep.

The number of reputation points should also be shown if you hover over the box we currently have.

A registered user with 2 reputation points will automatically be promoted to Junior Member.

A Junior Member with 5-6-7-8 (Whatever you think is best) should be automatically promoted to SRL Member.

Rules needed for this to work:
1) Do NOT say if you think something deserves a rep-point.
2) Do NOT post if you gave something a reputation-point.
3) Do ABSOLUTELY NOT request reputation. This should result in an infraction/warning.
4) Do NOT give rep-points to something that has already gotten.
5) "Everybody must have a mature approach towards these reputation-points. They are not rewarded to just everyone. Consider them a stackable cup."

Running it like this would result in only trusted persons giving out rep. If you start as a registered user and make great threads/continuous helpful posts/good scripts (and not applying to SRL-member) will get you granted, automatically, to SRL Member and possibly give you the ability to hand out rep yourself.

This idea may have a few flaws. One I see, in particular, is not allowing 2 people to give rep to the same thing. If something is really, really, REALLY great, 2 rep is of course fair. This could still be effectively eliminated by letting SSRL's see who gave rep, and not letting SRL-Members give a second rep-point at all. That way they will know exactly when they give the second rep-point that should be much harder to get for one thing, than just one rep.

If you read all the above, please comment ("And rep++ if you liked it!" JUST KIDDING!!)

Thats what I thought. All you have to do is go to user CP.
And we already have a "No ask rep rule" sorta…

King of Knives

2008-05-03 18:58:21

Well, that's the simpler idea… We can completely revitalize the repsystem to give a more realistic picture of a persons credability, or let it stay where it is now.

We kinda have the cups for what I proposed the repsystem could be used for.

So right now we have 2 ways:
1) Strictly enforce "Do NOT ask for Rep++"-rule
or
2) Revitalize Repsystem

But what about the current rep? No one, except the admins and mods, are able to know if I have 18 or 95 reputation-points… Can I be trusted? Do I benefit the community? Am I even worth anything?

The one we have know is kinda just for the the individuals benefit. I can see how much rep I have, but no one else can. Except for, maybe, boosting my confidence the current repsystem has no general idea for others, in my eyes.

I reckon we make the amount of rep points someone has visible to the public, maybe write "user has xx rep" just above or below the green dots. and make everyone start at 0, enforce the no asking for rep rule, automatically move people up the ranks if they get a certain amount of rep, but make it so the admins have to verify their promotion first. i reckon.

Well… Wizzup? we're not saying that the reputation system is bad, we're saying that it's pointless (to a degree).

IMO reputation should be proportional to the user giving it / receiving it. Meaning that depending on your "status" in the community you give out more rep but you also receive less rep when you do get rep.

The reason I suggest this is because if a Community Member does something that an Administrator acknowledges that community member must've done something pretty extraordinary to catch the attention of an admin and should be awarded as such.

I was thinking that all reputation should me reset (Although it should award some sort of bonus to those who already had high rep or else they'll be upset).

For giving out Reputation…

Administrators - 4 Reputation
Developers / Moderators - 3 Reputation
SSRL - 2 Reputation
SRL-Members - 1 Repuation
JMembers and Below - 0 Reputation

For receiving Reputation…

Administrators - 25% of Reputation Given
Developers / Moderators - 35% of Reputation Given
SSRL - 50% of Reputation Given
SRL-Members - 75% of Reputation Given
JMembers and Below - 100% of Reputation Given

So if an Administrator gives a SRL Member Reputation they would receive 3 Rep rather than 4 if they were a JMember or Below. This makes it harder to get rep the more "famous" you become and it also gives those who are more famous a bigger say as to who becomes "famous".

EDIT: Obviously they're is room for change as far as the Points / Percentages go… this is just an idea.

No one apart from Staff can see who has given them rep, because thats how the system has been setup. Check user permissions in admin cp. (Devs might possibly have permissions to see who has given them rep, I'm not sure)

Therefore, SSRL members will not be revealed if the system is put into play.

Also, I don't think rep is controlled atm. Thats why this topic was brought up, and thats why I suggested the new system.

To King of Knives:
The reason I say we do not allow SRL members to give out rep is because, as discussed somewhere else, SRL member status is becoming less and less important. The standard of acceptance scripts has decreased, and the skill in the SRL members section is slowly being diluted. This means that if we allow SRL members to hand out rep, we are basically allowing a large proportion of JSRL members to hand out rep as well, which again leads to our problem.

The second reason I did not include SRL members is that if we only allow SSRL+ to give out rep, rep will actually have a meaning, but not a huge significant effect on the forum. If a SSRL member recognizes someone else's work, then it is obviously good work, or a good post. It has a very positive effect on the community if people who think they are not being recognized find out that they actually are.

If we only allow SSRL+ to give out rep, then there is no reason for rep points to be reversed or taken away, as you are all trusted. This also makes controlling rep much easier to handle for the staff, as SSRL+ very rarely make mistakes with plagiarism etc.

The rules wouldn't even have to be like something you have posted. Talking about rep would be allowed, and asking for rep would just be frowned apon. Why? Because, again, only SSRL+ can give out rep and we don't automatically click on the blue tick as soon as we see someone asking for rep.

The points would also have to be much higher, as I would want auto promotions to be very rare. That way, if someone does get an auto promotion, they know they are doing something right, and others can see that they are doing something right. Again, it has a positive effect on the community.

Special Ed:
That would mean rewriting VBul's rep system, or finding a mod, and only Dankness can do that. Unfortuantely he doesn't have much free time, so he wouldn't be able to do that.

I was thinking we simply make it so that SSRL = +1, Devs = +2, Staff = +3. Then, if a registered user gets ~50 rep points, he is auto promoted, and if a JSRL gets ~100 rep points, he is auto promoted. Its a lot, I know, but think of it like this: We are all going to see good posts, and we are all going to hand out rep points. ~30 SSRL + ~20 Devs + ~10 staff. Thats already makes 100 rep points. We also want the user to post at least 10 good topics before he is auto promoted, so I think the rep boundaries are just right.

Think of how many people have actually been granted a promotion without appliance. A$bout 5-10? SO the rep boundaries would be just about right.

This will also allow people to post about rep in the celebrations forum, again with positive effect on the community.

  • Reset Everyone's rep
  • Only allow SSRL + to hand out rep. SSRL = +1, Devs = +2, Staff = +3
  • Auto Promotion from Reg to JSRL if they get 50 rep
  • Auto Promotion from JSRL to SRL if they get 100 rep (Lets make them rare things)
  • Post about the new system change
  • No extra rules have to be added since it doesn't matter if people ask for rep or not now.

The Claw

2008-05-05 05:45:19

ZephyrsFury

2008-05-05 05:49:55

I also think that rep should be made visible to the public. It could encourage a sort of competition for rep that would encourage more helpful posts etc. It would also allow the reader of a post a way to see how trustworthy the poster is. For example if the poster suggested that you delete this file and this file and change this file, you would want a clue as to how respected and trustworthy the member is. I know its a creap example but I'm having a mental blank.

And with the auto promotion from Reg to JSRL at 50 rep, theres pretty much no point as by the time they make enough useful posts to get 50 rep they've probably got 10 post and 7 weeks longevity already.

Starblaster100

2008-05-05 06:14:15

The Claw - What cup would you suggest?

Zephyr - I'll check if rep can be made visibly pubic. And good thinking with the auto promotion thing. How about it's changed to if JSRL gets 50, then they are promoted, and if SRL gets 100 they get a (new?) cup

EDIT: VBul doesn't have a built in option to make rep points visible, its a modification, so only Dankness would be able to do this

The Claw

When I was still a nooblet at SRL, I asked one of the admins (I think it was fawaki [dunno if I spelled that right]) where I could go to see my rep. He said that rep didn't matter on this forum and never quite answered me.

After that, I never really focused on rep (not that I did in the first place anyway). Rep could go both ways. It could result in many beggars (who don't read rules) or in a higher level of "trying". I think rep should be brought out. We can always repel it if things go bad.
