Require More Advanced Scripts in Appliances?
Daniel

Well, i was thinking this because nearly anybody is getting into SRL Members these days. So i am just wondering, to require more advanced things inside scripts, instead of functions/procedures some people just like and will vote a yes.
Discuss here. Also, please vote in the poll.

People seem to vote what they want, if you think people need more advanced functions then take that into account when you are voting.
But, yes, I do think too many people are getting in.

too many people getting in isnt the problem. If a bunch of people came along with really great scripts then i wouldnt care. Im disappointed about the low standards of some people.
i definately think that people need to start raising their personal standards for what they'll vote yes on.

I've already taken this into account and started voting no on many applications. Have a look at Da 0wner's application. There's nothing good about it, but people are voting yes because he's good at forms.

santa ur right i voted no to his too…
really i dont see much into it but, yeah a lot of people these days on msn tell others srl member good friends to vote yes and so on to get pressure on them.

Personally I think you were on the border faster but you're in now so don't worry about it.
I'm positive this exact thing has been discussed by the higher ups. The only people who really have the power to make any change though is us. If we vote stricter and harsher than we have been we can make SRL-Members a more elite group than it is now.

The scripts are ALOT more complicated & more advanced than the one i applied with, along time ago.
My script was a simple power cutter, silly standards. etc…
When i today look at my script. Im laughing.

Standards for letting people in should be upped.
I probably shouldn't have even gotten in with the things i had posted for my application, it was some stuff from like 3 years ago lol.

i think it would work a lot better if people didnt vote as much. It looks like the new people are voting a lot, so if they got in on a relatively not good script, and they compare their script to that person's then worse and worse people will be getting in.
its 9-yes, and 0-no right now, and i doubt thats what people really think -.-, or else there wouldnt be as many of those kind of applications getting people in
Daniel
2008-04-26 22:01:43
Yeah, maybe less down SRL as it is getting more user friendly, so it requires to be more advanced to use these new functions or procedures. Such as, maybe making FindObj have more parametres or something in it.
Also, i have made this poll public so others can see who had voted ;)

well if maybe the new members obeyed the "advice" of not to vote for the first couple of weeks…but i do think we should sort of review the requirements.
people were oting yes on a guy who can make a script… aren't we supposed to vote yes on a relatively good script app? but i think that as a community we should revise the requirements together.

People are too busy saying that the person will learn quickly when they get in. Last time I checked, you don't get access to seceret uber tutorials when you get into SRL Member's, so surely you should have to learn before you get in…

I completely agree.
People even dare to apply with a 150-lines power cutter script, I mean comeone..
At every single applyI look at, I discover "nooby" mistakes suck at wrong parameter using, no free'ing of dtm's, etc..

And people still vote Yes because they think the applicant will improve themselves once they get in. A members application IMO should be the best that the applicant can do - not just some simple script that they made in an hour cos they were desperate to get in. If their best at the time of applying isn't good enough then thats too bad.
EDIT: Do I think they need more advance scripts… well Yes and No. Yes I think it would be better to have more complex procedures and function but No I will vote yes if the script isn't as advanced but utilises SRL well, uses multiplayer efficiently and just meets all the requirements properly.

I think it should be so strict, that if the user hasn't got the things in his script to walk into the members section, it should be a clear definition of the rules and a goodbye, it's so stupid when people start to edit small, but bad mistakes during the application.
Sir R. M8gic1an
2008-04-27 10:26:03
i agree with ness, but there are some mistakes that you are told once and you won't make that mistake again, while there are some mistakes that it clearly shows a fault in your learning. perhaps only accept members if the yes votes are above 75-80%? that would be a good walk into members in my oppinion. 75% means 15 yes and 5 no. or 80% 16 yes, 4 no. a pretty clear result to me.

What this poll is asking:
Do you want SRL to die?
Yes: 17
No: 0
Now, its a hard choice. Some might argue that having higher standards will make people want to work harder to get in, thus having higher activity as people hope to learn by asking questions. But would you want to learn to get into an 'elite' group which isn't so elite? All of the new scripts are released to junior members, and most of them are above members grade. So there is mostly leeching.
This whole chain would be really long to type out, but all of the ones where I thought about removing leeching include most of the people leaving from SRL. The other ones without most people leaving include exposing SRL to not be so great and *then* everyone leaving.
BTW: I accidentally voted yes.

More stringent applications won't help. The problem is with the people voting on the applications. The only way, in my opinion, to fix appliances, is to:
1) Random demotion. Three or four demoted per day until we have all been demoted & reapplied. (worst option IMO)
2) Mass demotion. Demote all SRL members at once, and let Devs & Admins vote on who's to get back in (shutdown appliances, polls would be private, until there is enough of a userbase to open voting again). (best option IMO)
3) Chunk demotion. Demote groups of 20-40 at a time, let them reapply like normal, try to enforce more stringent rules. (bad option IMO)

Well, as much as I hate to say it, I guess I was one of those who got in with a script which really wouldn't be worth the member's title, so I can't really state a clear opinion without being unfair to people with similar scripts, but who might not get in. Thus, I will just comment on replies instead of stating too much of my opinion:
-I dont think this community will die out if we raise the standards for being accepted into the members section, because then it will be a title which people will strive harder for to achieve, because what has the members title become? It is no big achievement to get into the members anymore. Anyone with a little scripting experience or talent could get in within a couple of days. There are more and more members who don't even know how to use DTMs or have no clue of what they really do. Scripting is more than just understanding a language, it is critical thinking, thinking outside the box, and of understanding the logic behind the text, and in my opinion, that knowledge should also be tested. We don't need to raise the standards of a script, but we should have something to test those areas (a quiz has already been suggested on many other threads, but seeing as they all sorta "died", I simply included it again here, but also because I think it is important for members to really know what they are doing).
Those were just my few cents in the budget, but I'll just compare it to the saying: even a raindrop raises the level of the sea. (level as in the "height", for all those gamers out there who compare it to a lvl in runescape or WoW or something ;))

I can see how it would help a little, but there are people that were auto-memberized, and many that have quit RS and because of the member requirements, you need an rs script. I dont really think the problem is the standards themselves, but people dont really vote according to all of the standards all of the time. which leads to more people getting in and voting yes on worse apps.
and another problem with dememberizing members would be the brand new members would also have to be dememberized because they were voted upon by the old members.
I think it would be even worse if you demoted everyone at the same time, because of the effort that the devs and others would have to do to get everything back to normal. So if you were going to demmberize people i think that the best way to do it would either be chunks, a few a day, or…
you could reopen the voting for applications and have people re-vote on them, but i dont think i like that idea very much
EDIT: though i think that this thread alone will probably make some people vote more accordingly

So should we all start voting more strict? But like other people said, if we vote too strict then the community will eventually die off.
I think I'll wait another 2-4 weeks before voting, I only waited 2 weeks to vote and I think I need more time to think about how to vote now.
I'm starting to think people might not have wanted me to get in o.O but then I remember the people who thought I shouldn't of gotten in should have voted no.

There are two ways to solve a problem - create another parallel problem to remove the original problem, but give you another problem to solve, or to solve the first problem with the effort needed to create a problem twice as difficult.
Simply saying that people need to vote more strictly creates the problem of how strict do you vote? Saying that a quiz should establish knowledge about a users scripting ability, but how do you know they haven't just looked up the answers?
Saying is the easy part, thinking it through is much harder. I would suggest that submitting SRL scripts shouldn't be used as it's easy enough to leech parts of scripts and/or learn how to make a single good working script by reading a tutorial that shows you how to make a power script, how to use walking and how to bank in under a week without any prior knowledge if the person is semi-intelligent. What to replace it with I don't know.

Technique (/100)
This relates to what type of loops you have used where, how you found that certain object on the floor, how you detected that door, how you made sure your script was fail safe. It also refers to issues such as whether you should have used DTMs / DDTMs / bitmaps there or not, how you have withdrawn that item from the bank, and if you could have done this any better
Individuality (/100)
This refers to whether your scripting style is your own or not. The more individual your script is, the better it is for you, because this means you really understand what all of the different procedures / functions / types / methods should be used for. it means you are relying less on other people, and are developing your own style.
Use of SRL (/100)
This relates to how well you have used the SRL include. Are you creating custom functions that are already in SRL, or are you using the existing ones in the include. Also, are you using them correctly? There is no point in creating something which is already in the include. Basically this shows how well you have looked through the include before resorting to making it yourself, and it shows your understanding of the include as well.
Efficiency (/100)
This is the thing I am most strict about. The more efficient the script is, the better it is. Why constantly write out procedures when you can use a simple repeat instead? Are you using "end else" when needed? Do you have duplicate functions? Are you freeing DTMs / bitmaps after finishing with them? The more efficient your script is, the better it will run, and the easier errors will be to fix when they arise.
Presentation (/100)
Presentation of a script is always important! And this should be easy marks. There are only 4 categories. Do you have a respectable title page? A decent progress report? Good scripting standards? Commented procedures and functions? (which is the one everyone always forgets!)
Added Extras (/100)
What extra features did you include in your script? The more that are in there, the better it is. Be careful though, because including extra features which don't work / aren't efficient could get you marked down in other categories!
how about we use that to judge the scripts they give in, plus our current requirements and in they get a score above 420/600 (70%) we vote yes…
Markus
2008-05-01 04:30:55
You can't rate that much on individuality I think, as most people develop their own scripting style after they get in. Added extras should not be rated on too.

Being able to look up answers at least forces people to learn something. I think a better idea of a quiz would be "Use FindColorsTolerance to find an ore of your choice" or maybe random "bonus" questions like "If you can, try to make an autocolor function based off of FindWaterColor or FindRoadColor for the dirt road color found in Varrock" (just random examples), which could realy prove if the applicant is good with programming and SRL-related things. :)

See if they can differentiate when certain functions can be used: I constantly see overbuffed code where something faster could have been used – fine.
