Why IRC is a good thing

I think an IRC channel on this community is a good idea, heres why. (my list of reasons, there might be more)

We've tried to start one before, but it didnt work, i think with proper prepration and planning, we can make this attempt work.

There is a caste system in this forum, its a thing I don't like, it makes me uneasy.
Obviously all forums have some kind of system like that, but there are ways we can reduce it.

A lot of people use MSN around here, but thats not ideal, because you need to know the persons address, and these are heavily guarded, so the person doesnt get annoyed by countless new people who need help.
But IRC is different, you dont need to know anyone address, you just join one big channel, and if you can help someone, great! if not, there will probably be someone else who can also help.
I see IRC as a kind of real-time forum.

If theres no-one to help, people will probably start to talk about off-topic things, and get to know each other better, this way, our sense of community is much better.

You might be asking "why are you telling us this, we are SSRL".
IRC needs people to join, i once heard someone say "I'd join IRC if devs started coming"
so thats why I'm telling you this first, so there can be a user base already there, so when normal SRL people join, they are already many well-known people there
also, there would need to be some moderators in that channel, who better then to ask then SSRL? (so if you have any experiance with IRC, let us know)

i think once the IRC channel acheives a "critical mass", it will be alright.

I've attempted a IRC channel once too and it didn't work out that well.
Basically I think it's because not everyone reads the topic..

How about making some kind of extra "tab" like "iSpy" or "Wiki" with the option to join the irc server or use a java applet.. That way everyone has pretty good acces to the irc client, the only problem is that dankness isn't around lately .

I was at the previous attempt, and this is what think that caused it to die:
1. Lack of higher ranked people who always were there
2. Unawareness, we need a sticky and something in the ticker marquee at top of the screen
3. Tuts, we need a n00b proof tutorial/java client.

Wish I could post more, but I got very limited internet access (PSP is only thing I got).

I agree with Yakman, I think if we planned it out and organized it correctly before the release, people would be happier than ever to join an IRC knowing there are going to be some "high-ranking" people there. I don't know a lot about IRC but I do have the internet. :)

iv thought of those, this is how i tried to address them

1. made this thread, you guys join the channel please :)
2. talked to wizzup, he said he'll make an announcement and that
3. my thread about joining it, i hope its noob-proof enough

@special ed: dont worry, irc isnt that hard, scar is harder imo

I support! :D

Hopefully I can show my ugly face on there for a good chunk of time.

I meant as far as setting up configurations and stuff on the server and moderating. I don't really know any IRC commands so I'd have to learn.

Starblaster, ill post some stuff on this thread cause it wont be moved, the other one will

i dont think we'll need bots, iv made ChanServ join the channel to keep it open and stuff

tbh, i dont expect much trouble, srl are a nice crowd

the general idea is, you dont give yourself op until you need it, then when you're finished, you remove op
ill add some people to the ChanServ op list, they can make themself op by doing
/cs op #srl

then you have a @ in front of your name
you can remove yourself from op by doing /mode -o [your-nick]

once you're op you can kick people
this is where you can force them to leave the channel, they can easily rejoin, but its like a warning
/kick [target-nick] [reason (optional)]

you can also /ban, which blocks the person from entering the channel
thats a small part of it

i did see some guides about being an op on irc, google for them i guess

but its really the kind of thing that you, "pick up on the job" so to say
come on and ill add your nick to the chanserv list

even if theres nobody, idle there for a bit, so if someone comes on, theres 2 people, (hey 3 is a crowd)

otherwise, when the second person comes on, he'll think the same thing and leave

edit: btw, in irc-speak, to idle means to just stay there, minimise your client and do something else, so if someone want to talk to you, they can highlight you

edit edit: btw, in irc-speak, to highlight means to say someones name, if your sentance contains the name, most clients flash and blink to tell you to un-minimise it and talk

As for the Applet, I bet everyone here has Java since almost everyone has to ocasionally touch RuneScape, so, couldn't we have a link next to the iSpy and stuff saying "SRL IRC", linking to http://www.moparisthebest.com/irc.php

It's really easy, no need to install mIRC or anything :)

btw, use this applet instead of the other one
its already configured to the server and all that
c0de added it just before

From: My-other-thread

Using PJIRC
This is thanks to c0de, he's put the applet on his site, with the server and channel already configured, so <3 to you c0de
This is a java applet that runs in your browser, to use it, you will need the java libraries to be installed on your computer (you can get them at http://www.java.com/getjava/ if you don't already have it)

1. Simply go to http://srl.chat-on-line.org
2. Type in your nick and press Go Chat
3. Now go to the section Registering your nick

C0de (or anyone else with considerable php knowledge), how hard would it be to make IRC status siggies?

http://nl2.php.net/sockets
PHP has sockey functions, so you can get all users at a channel… It wouldn't be too hard.

EDIT:
http://nl2.php.net/manual-lookup.php?pattern=irc
VERY easy… :)
bool ircg_who ( resource $connection , string $mask [, bool $ops_only ] )
