Why Communism and Socialism Fails

This is completely copied and pasted off sythe.org, the thread being made by Sythe. I agree with it therefore im posting it here to try to wake people up. Let's have a debate (h) . If you don't believe communism causes poverty, take a look at a country like Cuba.

Here on our forums at sythe.org we have may misguided misinformed souls. I'd like to attempt to correct that with a proper debate on these topics.

Communism:
Communism is an ideology that claims every man on the planet owns every item of value on the planet in joint ownership, including one another. That is to say: All matter and the lives of others are owned equally by everyone.

Now there a several flavours of communism, but they tend to amount to the same thing. All advocate the eradication of the 'social classes', they aim to make every man equal, regardless of his talent and ability.

The reason communism is a fallacy is simple: People cannot jointly own one another. The concept is fallacious. How can one man be a slave to another, when the other is a slave to the first?

The second reason communism is a fallacy is the statement 'communism destroys the social classes and makes everyone equal'. This is fallacious because public assets must be controlled, and therefore owned, by a small group of people. Mass ownership could never work, because there would be too many divergent opinions as to what the asset should be used for (6.5 billion divergent opinions to be exact.) So, in order to have public assets, you must now elect a group to manage those public assets. And that group needs to be paid to do their job. And once that group is elected in their cushy jobs they won't want to leave. Low and behold you have just created a new ruling elite. The exact thing you were trying to destroy in the first instance.

So, we have explored why communism, as an ideology, is a fallacy. But now let us examine why it fails when put into practice.

In a free society man is free to own his assets, work has hard as he pleases, employ whoever he pleases at whatever price they will accept. A man is free to buy property and build industrial facilities thereon. He is free to grow his business. All of these activities create wealth. The innovative nature of the entrepreneur is that he sees what could be, not what is. A worthless piece of land, some iron ore, the unemployed. He adds his energy and capital and turns these worthless things into a factory, or an institution, something of great value. And furthermore, the thing he has built continues to produce value in its day to day operations.

This is where wealth comes from. It comes from the innovative middle class. The capitalist and his fresh ideas, his understanding of markets and economics, and his freedom to pursue his own goals.

Now, communism, on the other hand rejects the man's right to own land, build a factory, it rejects his right to employ people and pursue his own goals, and thus rejects his right, and ability, to produce wealth.

Communism instead holds that everything must be centrally planned by the government (or what is essentially the government). This group does not create wealth. They have no economic interest in industrial projects. Their job is to sit in a room and put marks on paper. If the project fails they do not go broke, and if they are blamed they can shift the blame elsewhere. So, rather than creating wealth, the government destroys wealth by stealing it from those who create it and wasting it on projects which make a loss, not a profit. A negative sum game.

So what have you here? You have enslaved man and forced him to remain docile, rather than going out and creating wealth as his instinct demands of him. AND you have a huge wealth consuming entity called the government, or central planning committee. It gets its wealth through taxation, stealing it from the people. The people have no wealth because they have been forced to stop creating wealth by their enslavement.

What you get is immense poverty, to the point of cannibalism (which did occur in Soviet Russia). And that is why communism fails.

Socialism

Socialists are similar to communists but they consider the free market to be a 'necessary evil' – how anyone could see the process of wealth creation as being evil I'll never know.

Socialists maintain that large government is needed to 'keep the public safe' 'for their own good'. These are the people who advocate the socialisation of industries such as schooling, health, transportation. And so: we have public schooling, public health and public transport. All of which are complete failures in every country they have ever been attempted in.

Now the problem with socialists is they too, like the communists, don't understand the free market. They have one objective 'help the people who are worse off than themselves' and this in itself is morally correct. But because of their ignorance they end up actually hurting the underclass, and the rest of the nation.

In order for the government to be able to afford public institutions it must raise taxes. In doing so a number of things happen.

To have taxes at all wastes a week of every business man's time every day of every year to begin with. So straight out of the gates you are wasting their money, because time is money in business. You force them to register their business, keep books and so on.

Now here we hit our first disincentive. If I have to pay the government one thousand dollars, every year, just to hold a legal business in my ownership, how likely am I to actually want to start a business, especially if I am uncertain of its prospects, and how far it will go.

Second disincentive: taxation, and increases in taxation. Real taxation in most countries (Australia especially) is about 50 - 70%. Take into account income tax, fuel tax, import tax, capital gains tax, sales tax, stamp duty, inflation tax, and all the rest. How much incentive do I have to make money knowing that 70% will be stolen from me by the government? I have very little incentive to put in 10 times the effort and build a business. Why not just work a dayjob and make the same money doing one tenth the work?

Third disincentive: public subsidies. If I want to go into business providing water, electricity, transport, education or health to people. I am automatically put into competetion with government services. Now while the government services are undoutably shitty, the fact is people have already been forced to pay for them. They've already been forced to make a choice from the aviable choices. True, they could pay a second time, but most people only want to pay once. So they use what they have already paid for, the public system. Now, the government can't go broke, you can't undercut their market; so they naturally hold a monopoly on such things.

Forth disincentive: labour laws. If I want to employ people to do a job, then I want the reserve the right to stop paying them if they fail to do the job for which they were employed. This seems natural, right? But the law does not permit me to do this. When I employ someone I must give him days off, I must only have him work between certain hours, and so forth. And, if I do not feel he is doing a good job, I need to be able to justify that feeling to a court in order to get rid of the bastard, as he would no doubt take me to court over unfair dismissal laws. So why should I bother? Why should I bother owning a business when I know I can't get good people to do the jobs I need done; and if I make a mistake in employing someone they can feed off my business and run it into the ground.

Fifth disincentive: zoning and other regulations. A new law is passed virtually every day. There are so many laws that it is impossible to be obeying the law from minute to minute. Something as simple as crossing the street in the wrong fashion is illegal thesedays. For business it is much worse. You can only build certain things in certain places. You can't mine land you own unless you have a permit. You can't broadcast radio unless you buy an hideously expensive license from the government. You need a licensed electrition to wire your building. You need a licened plumber to do your pipes. You need a licened book keeper to keep your books. The regulations are a huge waste of time and money and are a huge disincentive toward building a business.

There are many other disincentives, but in the interest of time lets briefly explore why socialized industries always fail.

When an industry (such as health) is first socialized it is generally found to be very promising, very good. Then as the next generation of professionals (doctors, teachers, etc.) come through, it's not so good. By the third generation is in an advanced state of disrepair and everyone is running around asking how this could have happened. Further; throwing money at it doesn't seem to help, it is perpetually broken.

The answer is simple. When the industry was first socialized the government took professionals out of the free market to work in the socialized environment. In the case of health this would have been private doctors, in the case of schooling, private school teachers, and so on. So for a while the socialized industry is really very good because these professionals have developed their service skills in the free market and are used to losing customers if they are rude or make misjudgments, or are unable to fulfill their requirements.

The next generation that comes through has not had free market experience. They come straight into the job and the first thing they notice is that they get paid the same amount regardless of how much work they do. So straight out you have slackers out of university who's income does not depend on their service and who have no free market ethics. Suddenly the system is a lot worse. But at least the old guys are still there to keep it running properly.

The third generation is where it comes crashing down. These slackers from the second generation get into management positions where they do little or no work with little or no idea about how to manage anything or anyone. The whole thing turns into a microcosm of communism and no one does any proper work, the few who do are completely overworked, the whole industry implodes.

And that is why socialism fails. Because it screws over the wealth creators and promotes lazy public servants to leech off the public wallet.

Libertarianism and Anarcho-Capitalism

The most pure form of libertarianism is anarcho-capitalism. Libertarianism is built on the non-aggression principle. To outline this: any action is legal provided it is done with the mutual consent of all involved. This means compulsory taxation would be illegal. Slavery would be illegal. War would be illegal.

In libertarianism man is free to do what he does best: build things. Build a business, build a life, build a family, build a house. A libertarian is a free man, able to purchase and own property, able to educate his own kids, or purchase education from the free market.

But best of all, the libertarian is free to run a business unimpeded. This is exceptionally important. Without all the disincentives provided by socialism virtually everyone would be interested in running their own business. If you are good at something, turn it into a business. Sell your art, sell your software, sell your services as an engineer. Build your business, plow the profits back into it; Compete with others for market share.

In the free libertarian society EVERY MAN OWNS HIS OWN PERSON and his own property. He is truely free to prusue his own goals in harmony with everyone else. He is free to create wealth. Every man is free to create wealth; and no man can consume the wealth of others.

America was a very rich country for a long time because of their freedom. The american experiment was to create the smallest, most tightly controlled, government of all time. The result was the largest empire of all time. Why? because government feeds off the free market; And America had a long time to grow, its dynamic powerful free market producing untold billions. The government stole this wealth and used it to its own ends; to grow, to conquer.

Government is the last true evil in the world. When it is destroyed (and the communists starve themselves to death) we will be free to pursue science, to pursue wealth, to pursue our own goals, and finally, to pursue happiness.

Communism in itself is perfect. Man and human nature is the problem.

And it's spelt "Socialism" ;) (Fixed it for you)

You can say Cuba is poor, but it has some of the best healthcare and other things. The only problem with it is mainly that USA isn't trading with it, so it makes it much harder for poor Cuba to make money. If you want an example of communism succeeding, then you should check out communism in Russia. It lasted quite a while and turned Russia from one of the most backward countries in Europe to a super power on par with America and Britain at the time. I'm sure that if Russia had become communist sooner, then we might have been living in a communist world today. Let's just be happy that didn;t happen, otherwise we wouldn't have RS to play!

my mom works at a school, and a guest speaker from Cuba came in today. As she put it, " communism takes away all of your rights ". she said that if you own land, and the government wants your land, they can come and take it. I wouldnt want to live like that, idk about you guys.

There's places like that in Africa and other 3rd world countries. The whole point of Communism is that everyone is equal and that the government is just there at the beginning to guide the country to communism. In theory, by living in a communist state you agree to have no possessions and only have what you need. Saying that communism takes away your rights is in itself a 'lie' as in that it is the government that do that under the pretense of communism, though I say 'lie' because one of it's central aims is that everyone is equal, thus there will be no abuse, theft etc. so no need for rights to protect people (or even the law), because they won't need to be protected from anything. Still, as EvilChicken said, as an idea it's near perfect. It's how we used to live and will probably live one day, but until then humans modern want for power and money leads us to capitalism which in itself isn't a bad idea, but the restrictions imposed upon people at birth is what stops capitalism from being perfect.

Ofcourse communism has its own downsides, but no ideology is perfect. And, Hobbit, thanks for supporting me - althrough I slightly disagree on your statement that communism is perfect. Communism, like all other ideologies, has its downsides. But, I don't really know what is better. Communism needs a change. But on the other side, look at China. They are one of the world's most developing (English isn't my primary language) countries in the world. Communism has it's perfect sides, as I hope you meant Hobbit, but the nature of mankind disallows it to come true.

That isn't communism, as mixter said that is the egotistical totalitarians that rule the country and say it is communism. In communism there is not essential "government". Everything is owned by the community. And though the community the make the decisions not by the decision of one person like in Cuba etc. But in larger forms communism isn't really effective because how can you have everyones input the make the decision. But in smaller village communities which communism was meant form, it works. But once again, the problem with communism is not communism, it is human greed and self indulgence.

i do see your point, and thats the reason why communism can't work in large country's today. But, when you say something like human greed, usually people who are rich today, besides a few lucky people, busted their ass. If they didn't bust their ass, someone in their immediate family busted their ass. ( there are few exceptions, hitting the lottery, getting lucky in stocks, etc. ) It is extreamly hard to run a small business witch is where all businesses start out. So i think if the person is willing to work 70 hours weeks, and take that risk, he deserves to be paid. And as Sythe said, it is almost human nature to do this.

Communism would be a perfect society, but people have this imperesion that some people are "More equal then others". So Communism starts off perfect, then over time the leaders crave more power.

If we could have some huge fuckign religious preacher as a communist leader, problem solved. He would like make everyone equal or "Gods children" or whatever. All equal.

Look at Mugabe, he's a power crazy freak. He beats people to make them vote for him. Thats not communism. Thats the leader being crazy.

Communism could work, if the leaders werent so crazy with power, or greedy.

But thats human nature, were greedy and paracidic. We get something, and we just want more and more.

this is where OTHER peoples greediness comes in, "you have and I, want". You would still have to keep the buissness running, or else you would be out of money soon. If people think running a huge cooperation is easy, its not. 70 hour + work weeks. People who take huge risks and bust their ass deserve to be paid. No one owns a buissness in my family, but i no that it can be hard work.

why could person a bust his ass, person b be lazy, but we would both be on the same economic status. screw that.

And this has to do with communism how? You are taking it out of proper context and into thinking you had thing money to begin with and now its all taken away. Thats not how it works. If you were in a proper communist community you wouldn't be mr economic overlord because all means of making products and a profit are owned by the community. So that means the tractor you use to till your fields isn't only owned by you, because you didn't buy it, the community did. So that means you, bobby-sue down the road and Billy-frank across the street all own a piece of that tractor

And what Yakman said is very true.

No court necessary, and you don't want to abuse someone, do you? We saw the industrial revolution…

So why should I bother? Why should I bother owning a business when I know I can't get good people to do the jobs I need done; and if I make a mistake in employing someone they can feed off my business and run it into the ground.

For business it is much worse. You can only build certain things in certain places.

Yea, else you gonna build a nuclear powerplant in the middle of the bush,

You can't mine land you own unless you have a permit.

Because you fuck up the environment, and destroy the earth

You can't broadcast radio unless you buy an hideously expensive license from the government.

Because else there's a race going on: who puts most radiation into You need a licensed electrition to wire your building.
You need a licened plumber to do your pipes. You need a licened book keeper to keep your books. The regulations are a huge waste of time and money and are a huge disincentive toward building a business.

Plumber and bookmaker are very important, you might fuck up your whole street by leakage, and if you're not a bookmaker you are more likely to make mistakes

The ideology behind communism works, but when put in practice it crumbles. Stalin is a good example of this. He used the KGB to silence any one who spoke out against the government.
Also, it is VERY hard to make everyone equal unless a country has been completely engineered from the beginning to be communist because for instance, houses we live in are not all the same size or luxury.

Has anyone ever thought about the fact that the whole world can survive on Communism, but the whole world can't survive on Capitalism?

For example:

Take a country like Egypt, Capitalist controlled. 70 Million people, production of goods is tiny. Everyone is poor, the producers sell their products for high prices, and only the middle class to rich people can get the necessities of life: Food, Water and Clothing. In a country like Australia, Capitalism would have worked, since there are only 20 Million people and production of goods is massive.

On the other hand, have a look at a Communist controlled Egypt. If the government controlled all the prices, stopped inflation, everyone would live happily, since everyone would have the necessities to live. I don't see any reason why Communism wouldn't work in Australia…

Damn…I really wish I could prove that Communism works for the whole world by using Mathematical Induction :p

something which i really dont understand is why many people belief in a one-size-fits-all approach,
just because it works for your country, your lucky resource-rich country, does not mean it works for our country, our limited third-world country.
democracy will keep us limited, communism will raise us.

it happened with cuba, before the revolution, there were very few american rich businessmen who made money from cuba, where the vast majority of people lived in poverty,
then fidel castro removed the americans, they economicly blocked cuba, and declared it "against human rights"
but the communist government in cuba raised that country above what anything capitalism could have acheived, cuba has the best doctors in the world, they have a better National Health Service (free doctors) then we have in the United Kingdom, same story with education.

the country was around 5% literate before the revolution, now it is 99.8%

OK I didn't take the time to read all of this and sometimes that can be a bad thing but frankly idc. Communism would work wonders if people weren't so power hungry but because of this the person who is in charge of the country goes on a power trip and most of the time (I truly believe this) its not that they want to diminish their country to a 3rd world country; come on man who would want their country to be a poor zit on a gnats butt; power is like a drug, its addictive and when told your doing wrong with that power, instead of looking at what they're doing and saying holy crap I guess I am ruining this country and should change my ways, they immediately go on the defensive and start blaming other people and start problems between country instead of accepting responsibility for their actions and changing their ways. If you ask me that last part about responsibility sounds alot like a drug addict. I know this for a fact that most druggies do that cause, Im not afraid to admit it and I like talking about it and trying to help people with it, I was an addict for a while but im all good now :) but yeah I definitly see addict in commy leaders.

The good thing about communism though is that you dont have people doing stuff that they shouldnt be doing. think about it when a little kid says I was grow up to be….. a scientist (thats what I wanted to be so im going to use that =P ) thats usually what a kid really does want to be when he/she grows up. Think about it what did you want to be when you grew up and now think about would you still want to be that……. most of you (if Im not a complete fool) are saying yeah sure or (something like me) just give me the chance. The government takes the kids after testing and questioning (alot of it) move their families to a new place where the school the kid is going to go and gives them a house a job and so on and so forth. Now that kids is growing up and learning what he/she probley really want to be when he/she grows up and if anyone understands this what do workers that love their job do?!?!?! More work and they're more productive on the task at hand.

But I could be wrong on the whole thing for you see every government has flaws and and every gov't should be questioned and thought about by everybody and if the people dont like something they need to do something about it the ( yes from v for vendetta) "the people should not fear thier gov't the gov't should feel their people" Very true and another one I thought of that goes along really good with that is that "the people should govern the gov't not the other way around" cause when the people make a decision based off everyones opinion and not some select individuals making decisions for us and most of the time are the ones we dont want. When the people decide and everyones view is heard and something is agreed upon and people govern their own life and their own country something magical happens but we dont know what yet but I have a feeling that its going to be amazing when it does happen. ALL THE ABOVE WAS MY OPINION if you have something to say all I ask is that you please be respectful and and please do not flame I was only stating MY OPINION and another thing I ask is that you please post your opinion cause we will soon be the generation in control and may our beliefs live on and someday find meaning in this world.

If you guys want I could make a thread on a bunch of diferent vies I have on gov't, laws and other stuff mostly political but if you guys are interested. I have alot of views if you guys havent noticed and I get in trouble in school quit abit for starting mini rallys and stuff.

Again all this was My Opinion

Again Again I didnt read the post before me so if some of this stuff has been said before my apologies

Again Again Again because of my lack of knowledge in researching communism I apologize. All I know is what Ive looked up at my own in school. I never really had the urge to look it up on the web. And I have learn as should have most of you have just by common sense that gov't only put in their text books what they want you to know and the stuff that is in there is re-worded and flipped around and around to make it sounds as America being the good guys or some rare cases being the bad guys and then accepting responsibility for it and doing something to redeem themselves and try to make everyone forget the bad stuff they did and make them look like the good guys again (imagine that) but sorry for my asinine remarks if any were made . I feel really strongly about what people are taught and told now a days and how people accept what is said as the truth right away and dont question our leaders at all and also about how we are governed and would never want to lead someone in the wrong direction cause then Id be a hypocrite cause Im completely against that…. my apologies if something was wrong in my statements and if the were correct or partly correct could someone please post if it was correct or (if) parts were and what parts. many thanks and many sorries

v8godfather, it really would be very nice if you could read what we all said, we'll read what you write, the least you could do is read ours.

so democracy/capitalism works does it?

it creates a strong, stable and established economy?

first they said it was nothing, then it was a hiccup, the current buzzword is a "economic slowdown", soon they'll start calling it a recession.
they also call it the Credit Crunch ™
I've noticed it as well, a lot of food costs more (except onions for some reason)

your system is in big trouble, since you've been living mostly off loans and credit for the last 10 years.

journalists should think of that before they go to Cuba and China, saying "communism has left the economy in tatters"

I dont believe in Capitalism is was a failure from the beginning. And the reason food prices are going up is because of gas. Because of that evil liquid America is pretty much killing themselves over it. And the ones that we want to do something (gov't) wont because this is exactly what they want. They're making million and billions of dollars cutting deals betwen oil companies and poloticians. There are many differnt fuel sources that america could use to power their vehicles but because of the secrect pact established and everyone in high places is getting rich. You think they're gonna let a new breakthrough technology make its way onto the market that could quickley take the place of oil/gas hell no the gov't would never let that happen as long as they're still making money off of oil/gas. Capatilsm is not a complete failure though for the ideas it was based upon were good ideas, you cant deny that… let the people choose and make decisions… great idea IMO, but you ahve people (like what I said before) that getting power hungry and will do anything to get that power and sense of leadership. Of course their gonna say the economy is in a hiccup or "economic slowdown" because if they came out and plain out said that the country was going into a depression…. again….. there would be a panic. Think about it, theres so many poor people in America and if they heard there was a depression and if the went to school for a while they know what the "Great Depression" was and not only the poor people ut the middle class as well will go into a giant scare and start rioting and looting every store around cause they know that their money will soon be null. Greedy People. Its the same reason the gov't wont tell the people that there is extraterestrials roaming over earth but they wont tell the people cause it would start a big scare. Example if you know history pretty well, before War of the Worlds was a movie it was a story read over the radio and people actually believed it was happening and there was a giants scare and everything that goes along with taht. they continued until the guy came out and said it was all a joke. IMO I think gov't asked this guy to do this just to see how people would reactand based on that reaction they would decide wether or not to tell people the truth. So they dumb the words down to be easier on the people of America. And not all of us live that was (off loans and shit). No one in my family pays for anything unless they have the cash to do it and I dont really consider it my system and my country cause if it was mine and I did have a voice it would be alot better if I could move out at this very moment hell yeah I would in an instant. Nobody should want to live in a police state who profit off of other people blood pain and misery.

Verdict: Capatalism is mostly bad but if done the right way can be very profitable and a good gov't
Communism is mostly good if done the right way and the leader is an honest person and someone who does not get his views and values mixxed up by money and power.

My own opinion. There is something better then any other gov't out there it jsut hasnt been developed yet. All forms of Gov't have their pros and cons but once this fantasy gov't is found you'll be able to see communism and capatalism in it more than anything other gov't

Impossible. Unless we created a robot to rule us who can't learn much so it cant try to take over the world. Anyone, stick the freaking pope there for all I care, and he will become corrupt. When you have absolute power over a nation and it's resources you will be corrupt in time. It is inevitable.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Edit:Odd sounding considering I'm in support of communism..

Wrong, wrong and wrong. Generations will continue to IMPROVE, not to get worse,

Not in the USA… majority of younger kids just want the most money while doing little to no work.. the "American Dream" I guess you could call it.

Has anyone ever read Isaac Asimov's book "I, ROBOT"? (Yes, it was a book).

Now, assuming someone does not know the "Three Laws of Robotics", the first is that a machine may never harm a human. This, if expanded, by a machines interpretation, would include mentally.

So, they have these giant machines that give suggestions on what individuals should do with there products. Even if an individual does not follow the suggestion for some reason, the machine will figure it in to the next calculation. What this eventually equates to is that because the machines will not be able to harm a human, they coordinate the economy to make sure no one is in poverty or no one is extremely rich. Therefore, the world is in semi-communism.

But the machines must protect themselves to protect mankind, but they can not allow humans to come to harm mentally. Therefore, the majority of the population is ignorant.

all humans are sinful and therefore any humanly established government has flaws big or small and will eventually fail. the only way i can c communism working would be if the entire world merged under one government and every continent (not country b/c the entire world would be one country) shares all their recourses, this still has flaws tho, there has to be some governing or leading person/group of people and as hobbit said power corrupts. so i'm going to stand on my original statement that all humans are prone to sin and therefore cannot create anything that is flawless

Yes, and because of how you have acted towards me on other occasions, I believe that includes you.

Therefore, the only way to make communism work would be to have a half-communism imposed by some force other than a humans'.

EDIT: And have the population be ignorant of it. 'Better' people will want to strive ahead, and if they figure out they are being held back by something just so the people that put no effort into what they are doing can succeed, they will oppose it. And as such you could not impose total communism - someone would notice the equality.
