I believe this is done by installing it onto one by selecting mobile installation when you install it. I've done it once before.

I mean can you put the program and scripts and everything else on a USB thumb drive and use it on any computer that has an available USB port?

Yes, you can. When you install it select mobile installation and select the thumb drive as the installation spot. If you need more help add me on MSN.

O sweet kk but what about just normal pograms? I heard that they need some registry file that stays on the PC/OS so you can't do this…
I had scar on my usb with my funny script like minesweeper solver, curveball owner, races, etc. they were fun to show off:D
As for other programs, It really depends on the program. Its like you said, registry keys and system files the program may need to be installed. Some will run and then eventually crash. You got a program in mind?

Many programs rely on the registry so they can not be portable, however their have been some open source apps that have been modded to work with a usb drive such as firefox, check out this site,
www.portableapps.com. Some companies release portable versions of their software but many don't( for instance I have portable Photoshop CS3)

i dont really think it even matters on the registry. ive just installed it on my computer, then copied to my usb then used on other computers, for many many programs(halo, firefox, scar, etc). though if you want to do it right, you can get lupopen suite…or something like that

OK sweet I just realized that scar divi 3.15 has a normal and portable edition. So instead of having the full edition I just run the portable off my 2gb memory stick which I carry with me everywhere. What is the difference between the two versions? If you know please PM me.

i have know idea what the dif is, but if i had to take a whack at it, i would say portable takes up less memory or something so you can store it on a small capacity usb. Edit target sauce you said pm gosh I need 2read more carefully these days. I got to go so I can't pm it, maybe 2moro.

I don't think it is possible but you can try and to find out the size just right click scar and go to properties. then add that to the size of the script you want to use.

Umm….I think if he was trying to do it at school, they would block the website…
And some internet cafe's will ban you for downloading/installing things.
Some places may not even have the internet, so he could use a minesweeper script and just watch it all day… :p

No kidding? Scar is only about 6mb, so that's 12mb for two, plus SRL is about 7mb, so that's 14mb for two. So that's only 17+12mb, which is 29mb. You could even maybe just squeeze 4 SCARs+SRLs on there. 29+29=58, so you still have 6mb left, heck, that's another scar or srl you could put on there, but maybe the portable version though. But I doubt it since USBs don't actually have as much space as they say they do. My 2gb USB Memory Stick only holds 1.89gb.

Yah I have a Kingston 2gb Datatraveler. It's green and it never leaves me! After formatting it is 1.9 gb but I only got it for 19.99 $ CAD!!! Still looking for the answer: What is the dif between portable and regular… Please PM me!

I run mine off a USB.
This keeps secured information off of computers, and is portable, so I don't have to download scar everywhere i go!

I mean USBs though. Of course your computer drive won't be, it has all the Windows System Stuff on there.

Wow, a 2gb USB for $20? That's great! Mine was on special, got it for about $40! Marked down from $60.
CAD?
Oh, and someone answered it before, Regular SCAR has more Stuff on there (I'm assuming) then portable SCAR, so Portable SCAR isn't as big of a file.
I'm not sure, but I would also say maybe Portable SCAR can't use SRL? Not sure though. Just guessing.

Good thinking.
The only time you would have to download SCAR is when there is a new version out. :p
Doesn't it get tedious having to Plug-In your USB every time you want to open SCAR? Or do you only have it portable on your USB for OTHER places, and Regular SCAR at home?

Well I don't mind plugging it in. And yes it can use SRL otherwise I wouldn't be able to use these great scripts! Yah I got the drive from Future Shop. O and I just realized it's usually 60$!

Well if you are not sure, instead of pasting everything to the USB drive, just put the installers and the scripts you use.

Anyone forgetting the portable version of SCAR?
From: Lacky
My 2gb USB Memory Stick only holds 1.89gb.
It's 2000000000 bytes but 1kb = 1024 bytes, 1mb = 1024kb and so on, so the actual size in GB will be smaller

I'm pretty sure the only real difference between the normal version and portable is that the portable version will only install files into the designated folder (which could be a drive) so it doesn't "rely" on system based files (I'm sure normal version can run off a USB, though I think it may crash under certain conditions that relate to a system specific file), though it would be better to ask Freddy. BTW, has anyone seen him?
Edit: Compared sizes, and Scar portable seems to be around 2 mb smaller (based on 'on disk size') though that could be because I don't have my plugins etc. on my iPod. Not to mention that at a size of 10 mb, you could have around 6 on a 64mb sd card and around 190 or so on a 2gb memory stick (not sure on the 'give or take 1' amount, though I know it's just under 200).

That would be pure awesome win-ness(?). If that was possible, I would be soo happy. I guess u might be able to for the iPod Touch and the iPhone, couldn't you? I don't really know about the Apple iPhone/iPod Touch SDK pack thing…Plus I don't have an iPhone or iTouch :( .
mixster
2008-04-10 20:58:52
Freddy would have to port it into C++ first, then learn how to build all the interface around available options using the iPhone/Touch, not to mention it would be crap as it would take forever to code, it would cost a lot to run (unless you have WiFi access or free internet) and unless SMART still worked on it, it pretty much would be an iBrick while autoing :)
Also Lacky, I was going for the humour aspect :)
Anyway, iPod's works great as a USB stick with built in mp3 player (old nano ftw! 2gb wewt) as long as you don't have too much music or too much stuff to carry around ;)

2008-04-10 21:32:44
Yea i wish you could run it on your ipod but it would just be taking up a load of memory, it would be horrible to see how slow things would go and you couldnt listen to music while doing it. Or be on internet

You could now go on da intranetz if you used S.M.A.R.T.
if scar would run on Linux then you could do it on a 2gb u3 smart drive but other then that i dont know

my college it security is superior to anything ive ever seen

u open some settings and it closes
u type proxy in google and IE closes
u can run programs or send them from a usb drive
u cant iethen run batch files other than shutdown -f
chika chika yeah
2008-04-19 14:12:41
You can run almost anything off of a USB drive so long as it doesnt have to retrieve system files or anything, I think, because it probably couldn't find them in the right spot. But yea, SCAR will work fine, and a 128MB USB drive would work perfectly with lots of space.
And wow, thats some intense security, my school on the other hand is easily passable, and its fun :)
