I've been pondering this overly ambitious idea and I thought I might as well throw it out.

The SRL community is quite large and likely quite powerful within the virtual boundaries of Runescape. However, it seems to me that if we were all to work together and combine forces, we could accomplish much more.

My idea is this then: to mobilize the SRL community by making a sudden, unified attack on the Grand Exchange.

What sort of 'attack', you ask? Well, what I had in mind was focusing all our riches on single item, so that we buy up all of it on the exchange. In this way, no other player would be able to buy that item from the exchange, and therefore would have to buy it from us, who have hoarded close to the entire world's supply. We can then charge high prices and leisurely sell them off to the highest bidder, making a large profit in addition to notoriety.

Jagex has taken many measures to prevent an individual from achieving a monopoly, such as a limit to how much of a certain good you can buy per a certain amount of time, but they have overlooked the power of a combined effort, and I believe we could make this work.

I have thought about what item we should target, and I will recommend the law rune for three reasons:
-It is a necessity for many players: they are often willing to pay 1k or more for one when they need to teleport. If players cannot buy them from the exchange, they will come and buy it from us.
-Not too many people will be able to craft more, because it's members only and you need at least level 54 in crafting.
-Most importantly, the limit on how many law runes one person can buy from the exchange every few hours is very high–something like 25k. Compare that to most other items at just 100.

I think there are a number of benefits to this plan, such as the possibility for great financial success and fame. Even if we do fail to buy up all of the law runes on the grand exchange, we can always just sell them back at no loss. It is even possible that we could make money even though we failed if the law runes go up in price. Looking at the history for the prices of law runes, it seems there is an upward trend now.
http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Grand_Exchange_Market_Watch/Common_Trade_Index
(scroll down a little and click history in the table for the law rune)

You could see this as strike back against Jagex for their updates, or as an interesting experiment, but regardless, it's a lot of fun to unite under a common cause and mess with the economy of Runescape.

If you managed to get through all that, please give me your thoughts, criticisms, suggestions, etc.

Who would we want to waste all of our gold points?

Are you selling law runes? :p

Jahooma

no lol, I'm not selling law runes. I'm not even a member. And the use of a law rune as the target item is not set in stone.

You still didn't mention why we should waste all of our hard earned GP's…

Jahooma

Waste? There's very little chance you will actually lose any money. What's really a waste is letting your gp's sit dormant in you bank account.

mixster

2008-03-25 03:47:54

This really would only work in theory. Chances are some members would buy some at the beginning, wait for prices to go a bit higher and sell them back to the GE. Also, it will be hard to get them all as there's a huge amount and you would have to be the Martin Luther King Jr. of the 21st century to get every user on the board to do it, so it would end up being hard as you would probably only have 5 or 6 people, most of whom will be poor and want to do this is a way to make some money. Also, I think the trade limit will actually stop us from making a lot of money, as with each Law rune costing around 1k at highest now, we can sell at 3k if we were the only ones who did have, but then we could only sell the odd 1 every now and then, leaving us with thousands of law runes in our banks.
Like I said, good idea in theory, but will not happen, unless you're Zezima/other 99 all stats player with billions of RS gp to spend yourself.

not really it depends 100% on what you do, if you let your money sit in your bank account instead of buying a common item you wont lose money because the item will depreciate if you buy a rare then the rare SHOULD go up and you would make money

if everybody at SRL (4k active members) worked together at something like this or any other type of price manipulation then we might accomplish something big, but after you take into accoutnt about 4k people at srl and 1m members i dont think we would make a large difference.

You make some good points, Mixster.
It really comes down to that we aren't capable of acting together, every person will do only what benefits him the most. However, if we for example were to buy up all the law runes on a single day, no one would be able to sell them back to the GE for a profit, and therefore they wouldn't even be tempted to betray our cause.
All we really need to do to make this happen is to have a respected member come forward and support this idea.
I think if we get even half the people here, that will be enough to buy out this one item. Which leads to two questions : How many law runes are there on the exchange? and do we have enough combined wealth to buy them all?

I might have more to say later.

mixster

2008-03-25 17:16:09

I'm certain we would have enough wealth if the majority of members joined, but the problem is that most people have money stored in other ways, mainly as this is a scripting forum, so people have millions of yews or ores or something like that, so to get all of them ready would take a good few days. Anyway, buying law runes is generally a good business in RS normally as the price does seem to influx daily at peak times so all you have to do it co-ordinate your buying and selling times and you could, probably, make a lot of money via the GE without having to hold the law runes hostage.
Maybe if Wizzup? supported this idea, then members would back it up, but I doubt it will happen and he would probably be the only with enough popular global support to do it (I'm sure RAM, Benland or StarBlaster could pull a lot of support from SRL members, Dev's and older Jr member's, but Wizzup? is probably the only forum-renowned person here).

i think its a good idea…but I don't like buying the laws, sure you need a kinda high level to craft them….but even I, a non-member have that high of RC lvl. I think we would need to find a more suitable item to monopolize…
anyway, I'd be in on this if we could get a huge collaboration sounds kinda fun, and I don't have anything to buy anyways, I'm kinda poor tho, only like 2m…sorry, but I'd join if we got a lot of people to do it too

lakerzz8

2008-03-25 17:45:27

One problem I see with this is that although we may buy all the laws on the Grand Exchange, people probably have laws stored in the thousands and thousands and if they saw the price rise dramatically they would begin selling it themselves once again flooding the GE with even more laws. And with the cockroaches dropping 10-15 laws at a time and other monsters and runecrafting, I don't believe we would even be able to hold half the laws in runescape.

Jahooma

2008-03-25 18:52:04

To summarize:
We will try to buy up all of a certain item on the Grand Exchange in a short period of time, so that everyone will have to buy them elsewhere for higher prices. Since we will have huge stockpiles of that item we can sell them back for a large profit.

Now there are two problems to solve:
1. Choosing the 'target item', or the item that we buy up
2. Getting the needed support from members

1. I have put forth the idea of using a law rune.
Problems with that:
a. they are produced fairly fast by crafters and come up often in monster drops
b. people stockpile them

Benefits to the law rune:
a. Easy to make money off even if we fail to get a monopoly
b. It has a much higher limit on the number you can buy every couple hours on the grand exchange than most items. I think it's you can buy 25k of them every couple hours
c. It is a necessity to most players and they would be willing to pay much more for one.

If we're looking for alternatives to the law rune we would like it
a. to be rare or hard to produce more of
b. to be important to players so that they will buy it even for higher prices
c. to have a high limit so we can buy many of them quickly (most stackable items have a high limit)
d. to not be a commonly stockpiled item

Actually scratch letter c. We may be able to buy more of them, but that also means there are more on the market, meaning it's usually just as hard to get a monopoly as items with a low limit.

So overall, I think it would still be profitable with law runes, but I bet we can find an even better item.

2. Once more people see this thread I think we will get enough people to do it as long as we can prove it profitable.

One of the other problems is that Jagex controls their own prices. It's one of their "countermeasures" against people like us doing this exact thing (which also conviently lets them decrease the price of rares as they see fit :duh:).

Well, when you think about it, there's about 4k members here, each with probably heaps of accounts (mule accounts etc.), so there's probably about 20000-100000 accounts here, and we are all in different timezones, so we would be continuously putting effort into this, we would have bought loads before Jagex even get a whiff of this, considering they are UK based, we just set a time, close to Jagex's bed time and the people online then start, and it just all goes around. :p

That's when we wait a week or so, for more influx, then we continue, and resell.

Well someones modest now aren't they? :p

Although I am thinking this could work, we would probably only raise raise our bank account by about 500k or so, and then remember, we're each on different accounts, so, although we are trying to buy the GE out, everyone will all want the money to themselves, so there will be less for everyone else, because not everyone has the exact same amount of money, the richer people will be able to buy more, thus they get richer than someone with less amount of money, as they can't buy as many, to resell. Also, I don't think everyone would put all their money into a huge fund, held by, say Wt-Fakawi or Wizzup?, people still wouldn't trust them with their money. I mean, I for one, and probably the majority would trust them, but there would still be many (leechers most likely) that wouldn't.

Although I am all for it, it just sound to much like a Pyramid Scheme…oh wait…IT IS! And we all know how much pyramid schemes fail…that's not to say they all do, but most of them do.

Still, sounds good. ^_^

mixster

2008-03-30 06:12:29

You have no idea what a pyramid scheme is. A pyramid scheme is where you get people to give you money without selling anything. Also, I doubt most users have 25 accounts, so it's probably closer to 10 accounts which would be around a 25th of the total population. Also, you're not taking into account that most of those probably won't have much instant money as they will most likely be skillers so they would have to go off and chop etc. and then sell what they chop or sell what they have in their bank which could take some time. Also, trying to get all members to join in is a dream. It would probably be wiser to try to get a certain overall amount of cash, like 50 mil or something similar.
Lastly, it's very hard to transfer cash onto accounts with the GE update, so having a big central fund wouldn't work and the limit on items to buy would also stop it from happening quickly.

Jahooma

2008-03-30 09:43:39

It makes no sense to call this a pyramid scheme. It is kind of insulting and completely unrelated.

We don't have to worry about Jagex artificially controlling the price because we will buy up all of the item on the GE. If Jagex decides to change the price for that item on the GE, it won't matter, because there won't be any items left on the exchange to buy. Basically we will make the GE useless for that item.

Mixster is right that one big central fund would never work. That wasn't my idea at all. It is only possible to get a monopoly with many people buying at the same time because of the buying limits they have.
Also it's not a problem that it would take an extra week or two for people to convert their items in cash. We are in no rush. We can wait as long as needed to ensure a successful monopoly.

And so finally, it just comes down to this: will we be able to get enough people to join? I think we will because this is about the same as asking: Do you want to double(or triple…) your money? No one can refuse a safe and extremely profitable offer.

mixster

2008-03-30 09:56:36

They can very easily, but as said, you need to convince some high up members to help promote this. I'm all for it personally, but I just don't believe it will be possible unless we get that support. In the mean time, I'm gonna check out the law runes and see the rate of inflation for them over a few days.
Edit: Current price is 305-321 with the average being 308.

I think I see what you are saying strikerx25, they will ban the people buying 1000s of rune axes. But if we buy law runes, they won't really be able to tell, because lots of people buy lots of law runes. Besides, what we are doing is not against any rules, right?

I am agreeing that it might look weird when people start buying tons of rune axes, but we wouldn't get banned because even if Jagex does find this thread, we really have done nothing that is against the rules. Lots of people manipulate the grand exchange for a profit right now, and they don't get banned. I bought more than 3k chef's hats a while ago for investment purposes and never got in trouble.

My other point is that we really don't even have to worry about this at all if we buy something like law runes which are commonly bought in large quantities. I am 100 percent sure no one would or could get banned.

Buying up all the Law's then driving the price up on a massive scale could seriously affect the in-game economy with higher level players spending more money on laws for tele'ing rather than other stuff, demand for higher level skill raw goods will go down which would in turn affect those banking ores/logs, which will in turn affect the amount of stuff they buy and it just goes on down. If that did happen, Jagex would impose rules to stop it happen again (if they still care about RS) which would probably include much lower buying limits and the possibility of black marks for trying to manipulate GE prices for your own personal gain, though I would think it would probably just be lower buy limits. Also, this will probably only happen if we got enough support to more or less buy every Law rune on the market and buy up all the Law's that pop up as the price starts to go up.

Good points.. though how about we buy more then one item. Say for infact coal. Coal has gone down from 250 ea to 150. We could manipulate more then one item. But for this to work, we need alot of people to be in this.

We will likely coordinate our 'attack' so that we will end up buying all of the item in one day, so almost all of what we buy will be at the same price.
After that, the GE will start to very slowly react by going up a few percentage points a day. Yes, we will still have to buy all the new law runes coming up on the GE for slightly more, but by that time we will be selling them to others for much much more.
The GE is just way too slow to keep up with us. And if Jagex steps in and artificially raises the price for law runes on the GE, we can just sell all of ours back for a big profit. :D

Thanks for your suggestion of using the rune pickax.
But the trading restrictions are for every couple hours. You could still buy 25k law runes (7.75 mil) or 100 rune pickaxes (~1.8mil) every couple hours. This is probably good for us because then the super rich people won't make all the money.

i only give my support if we do it to a non makeable item, for instance a monster drop only or treasure trails not a rune med helm.

non makeable items wont have enough demand to be able to buy a lot in a short mount of time and enough buyers to make that big of a difference.

by the way, i have just under 2 mil that i can spend. I could do more, but that'd mean that i'd have to spend at least some time on rs to sell my items. That, being too boring for me, is not possible :)

lazy…lol, GE makes it too easy to sell stuff…I ended up selling stuff I didn't want to because it was so easy :p

I support but wouldn't Fagex just make law drops more frequent or something?

It seems to me there are mainly two different conceptions of the plan that I hope to clear up.
A short-term monopoly vs. a long-term monopoly

Originally I planned the short-term monopoly which is this: to buy up an item important to the economy for maybe a week and then sell it back. This essentially allows us to choose a more significant item because even if it can be produced fairly quickly, we will still be able to continue buying them up because our funds will likely last a week.

If, however, we do the long-term monopoly, it would be imperative that we choose an item that cannot be recreated quickly, so that we can remain in control of that item. This long-term monopoly could probably be held for months.

I support but wouldn't Fagex just make law drops more frequent or something?

palmpilot71, if we were to use law runes, we probably would do a short term monopoly. This means J/Fagex would have to drop like 100k law runes in less than a week to make any difference. First, they will be unlikely to react that quickly. Second, they wouldn't just create large amounts of runes because that would be harmful to the economy.

andrewrox424, if we were going for a long term monopoly, you would be absolutely correct that we should only use a non-creatable item. But what I'd like to emphasize is that with a short term monopoly, it would be perfectly fine to choose something like a law rune.

it'd be better if we took over all certin item (yew tree..etc) in a world…

or we make a annual scar day where admins make a script and every one from scar has to run it at xx place at xx time

i dont c wat u mean, im pretty sure the grand exchange interweaves between all the worlds, and i dont think yews would be the best choice of item, b/c of all the people that are cutting them 24/7 (even some people from this community) itd be WAY to hard for us to buy them all up when so many people are cutting and selling them so quickly. just some of my thoughts

I say go for cheap items. After all, with 2m, you can buy 1k items costing 2k, then if the price raises by 10gp, you've made 10k, but buy 50k items costing 200gp, raise the price by 1gp and you've made 50k, or (with feathers just as an example), buy 500k feathers at 4gp, then raises the price by 1gp and you've made 500k :)
Just something to think about.

well, heres some of my thoughts, i haven't had time to organize them so ill just post it all and c wat u guys think about it:

i just noticed the price of normal ess shot up to 40gp ea! so wat i did was i attempted to buy one at 42, 41, 40 and so on until i couldnt get one right away, i could buy at 42 and 41 and 40 buts thats it, so im figuring the price might go up a lil more in the near future so i took my current ess buying offer out (it was at 35 from a few weeks ago) and then i invested 2mil into ess, at 40 ea, however i couldnt buy any, not even one, so i raised it to 42 ea (the max) and still nothing, i guess that just means that nobodys selling and everyones buying…

EDIT>>>

hmm, i was just able to buy a small number of ess on a diff character for 41 ea very quickly??

I like the concept of this idea, but it's got some flaws, there's too many inpredictable factors that could really screw it up good… It's a nice theory though…

i think what some of us are over looking is how big of an impact the SRL community ALREADY has on runescape's economy, i mean think about it, all the people here that are running woodcutting, mining, ess mining, flax pickers, rune crafters and all similar scripts regularly, thats a lot of supplies that most likely go through the grand exchange at one point or another. we already have a large influence on the economy. just some thoughts to chew on

Yea i no, regular people don't understand that we make some of the prices for things really low and easy to buy. After that trade update and GE, the prices have shot up because a ton of autoers from other programs died…

2008-04-12 07:10:07

I've been thinking and lob's seemed like a good idea. They are in huge demand from BH'ers etc. and extra pressure on it would seriously screw up the prices as people buy it all very quickly at higher prices. Though I've also been thinking about Jagex, and won't they just not raise the GE prices for it if they noticed a minority buying it all/ nearly all of it?

to be honest i think if srl was to go down runescape economy would really stuff up

mixster

2008-04-12 08:01:01

It wouldn't stuff up the economy, though at first when the flow of primary goods became hindered, prices would rise on armour, weapons, ores etc. while other goods prices lowered due to no one buying them. Eventually the market would settle down, but it would really just result in a shift towards more expensive player made content (mainly runes, armour, weapons and ores & ess) and monster drops and food mainly having a lower price.

If Jagex raised the price on the GE that could only help us. For one thing we would make lots of money if they decide to make a 100-200 percent increase (double or triple it). And if they only increase it a little, we would have no problem continuing to buy it up, so it wouldn't solve the problem in Jagex's eyes.
The bottom line is that if Jagex increases the price on the GE, they are helping us make money.

I probably put too many negatives in there: I meant what if they don't change the prices and just leave them as they are? We would buy up huge amounts and it just means that the average sell price would just shift towards the more expensive end :)

1.For each day we hold the monopoly, it will rise 5% on the GE.
2.We can sell some of them the old fashioned way-regular trades

Remember that the 5% is compounded so you're profits gets exponentially larger the longer we hold a monopoly. If we hold a monopoly for 2 months we will multiply our money by 18.6! In light of this it seems a long term monopoly may be the best.

Its a pretty simple plan i don't think people should keep on questioning it. More action less talk.

mixster

2008-04-15 07:23:04

If it does go consistently up at 5% a day, then it will actually be just over 1900% (100 * (1.05 ^ 61)) :)
But how can we assume it will rise at that rate? Chances are that Jagex will stop the price rising if it gets even near to double, especially if it is a good that is in high demand. Also, nikos, we would start it but we need more support. To have an impact on popular goods, we will literally need hundreds of millions of GP. Lastly, just a tip for those looking to increase their cash for this, spend all your money on equal amounts of tin and copper ore, find a good bar smelter and smelt them all then sell them. You will nearly double your money as well as gain a serious amount of smelting exp :)

I've been thinking about doing something like this except, manipulate the price where it is lower than the low alch price then buy/sell to the general store.

Jahooma

2008-04-17 08:04:25

Ok, lets do something. We need to decide what we are doing and do it.

I'm not quite sure how many people we need… it probably depends on which item we choose. We've got about 15 on the supporters list. If we can't find too many more we could change to a less popular item.

For an estimate, say each person has 3-4 mil each. That's 45-60 mill with our 15. Is that estimate too low? (or too high?)

We should be able to hold a monopoly of some lesser item for a couple weeks.
I have the feeling that as soon as we announce that we are buying some item, that others will join in because they know that they will be able to make money buying it.

So, what we need to do is decide:
1. whether or not we are going to wait for more people
2. which item to use

After that we can announce our decision and start monopolizing. Let's get this thing started.

Im in… although 3m gp will have to be next week sometime =P

I have 1k law… already done my bit =D

EDIT: Just wondering… when the prices suddenly shoot up, and people are still going to be making law runes, then how are we going to be able to buy them? Law runes at their peak will be, as you said, 1900% more… Are we going to just leave them for no-one to buy, because then the monopoly will go down. Eventually, to keep it up, we would have to spend near enough 6k per law rune… and when people sell them in the thousands…

Tell me if I have the wrong end of the stick or not =P

EDIT AGAIN: Forgot to mention that more people will be inclined to make (and then sell) law runes if they see the prices suddenly skyrocket…

EDIT AGAIN AGAIN: Feathers wouldnt be a bad item to take control over… After all, with forefeathers and tarajunky's script, we already have the monopoly over that item, we just haven't used it for anything.

what if you all bought like a treasure trail item so that way it would be hard for the people to replenish stock of the item.

Mr. timbers is right, it should be a treasure trail item. Law runes are too easy to make.
