How to Create Karaoke Versions of Regular Songs

Some of you may have found the "Voice Cancellation" or similar checkbox on your sound card, but despised it's quality and how it only half-works anyway :p

First off, you'll need a copy of Adobe Audition (I'm using version 3). A 30-day demo should work too :)

Ok, first off, open the mp3 track that you want to play with.

I'm choosing Policeman Benz by MAXIMUM THE HORMONE for this one.

Ok, now go to the effects tab and select Center Channel Extractor, on mine it's under Stereo Imagery, but I think it goes under Filters and Effects on Audition 2.

Double-click the effect and make sure Frequency Range is set to Custom. This way we can fiddle around with what we're cutting out as a preview is going.

Here's a brief explanation of each of the fields worth playing with:
Center Channel Level: This either isolates or gets rid of the center channel that we're playing with. We want this at the bottom for now, though you can kinda isolate the vocals if you move it all the way to the right.
Frequency Range - Start: The lower end of the vocal frequency, for most males it's around 300, and most females is around 400.
Frequency Range - End: The higher end of the vocal frequency. I keep this at the maximum (22kHz) since it resonates that frequency, meaning hi-hats go crazy and sound super-crappy
Crossover: Just keep it at 100% :p
Phase Discrimination: This one's important. It determines how lenient you want to be in isolating/deleting vocals or other parts of a track. Generally 7º is good for deleting vocals and 5º is good for isolating them.
Amplitude Discrimination/Amplitude: These are really only useful for isolating vocals. If you are, then you want these lower to get rid of some of the snare hits that will come along with the vocals. Otherwise, these should be around the maximum limit :p

Okay, so here we go. Make sure Frequency Range is set to Custom again. Now press the play symbol in the lower-left hand corner of that window. The song should start playing.

First you'll want to play around with the frequency range numbers. Move them around until you're only getting rid of the vocals, and maybe the snare hit since it's on the same frequencies. Now play with the Phase Discrimination, between 5º and 8º is usually where you'll end up.

Once you like the sound you're getting, press OK. It should take a while to apply.

After that you hopefully will have a song without any more vocals. If you're really lucky, then some of the backup vocals might stay too :)

Note: Some songs simply won't work with this. Sometimes the vocals get put on a filter, or they could have stereo separation (which is the Delay field in that window), or the track could just be insanely crappy :p.

(Well deserved bump …)

Great tut Widget! I actually even downloaded Adobe Aduition on my slow internet connection just for you :) Very nice.

Edit: On 'Presets' there is an option for "Vocal Remove" LOL …

Edit2: Vocal Remove doesn't do much ;) "You Spin Me Round" is fun to do this to.

Very handy! Im not a big fan of karaoke but this actually helped me learn how to remove different parts of instruments in a song. I like to play along with music on my drums sometimes and im tired of buying all those edited cds that cost a ton.
