Leachers.

Alright, Well im here to talk about the leachers in srl-forums.

When i first came to Srl-forums, there were almost none, i came to this community cause this was the best and most controled and watched forums. This forum has achieved so much, but now, since SRL/Scar is so big now alot of people are coming here in search of only scripts. I think theres a way better way of making leachers stay out. I know we have that whole new Srl-Junior member thingy, but 10 posts and 1 week? i think thats alittle to easy, not saying it was dumb, it was a great idea to start off. Honestly, i think we should just get rid of the free scripts area for all people that Are New Registers. I think For New registered users should only be able to discuss and read in curtain forums, I think we should Disable all new registree's from Free Scripts.

People might say, than we would lose alot of people. But Think of it, All there doing is trying to get free scripts and leave. I dont even think they should have any script, only first scripts section. They would still be aloud to access all of the other new user forums, but i think if we took out the free script section, more users would want to find out on how to script, other than use scripts.

Reason im thinking of this is because everyone's script is being spamed, by new users trying to get a post count of 10. Its quite annoying if i must say.

O yea if you dont understand a part just tell me and ill explain in more detail.

when I first came here all I did was leech, but if I hadn't had access to any scripts I probably would have left and never learned to script

If it wasn't for the free scripts section i wouldn't be here. When i first joined all i wanted was the scripts but then after leaching scripts i stared reading the other forms and now i m not really a lecher anymore!

Disagreed.

You have less longevity than I do, and I have less longevity than many others do.

On a partly public board, there is always leechers.

Free For All scripts section contains the script that do not cause harm or mass destruction to the RuneScape ecology, mostly AutoFighters.

Before the Junior Member rank, when the next step from Registered User was SRL Member, were propably a lot more leechers - you maybe couldn't see them because they didn't have any motivation to make a post, but they existed. Now, if they want scripts that get them gps, they have to be active, post to become an SRL Junior Member, and you slam a red "leecher" mark at the poster of a post like "nice omg". But, now we are able to decrease the amount of leechers, now when they have to show themselves, they will get told not to spam, they will get infracted, they will get banned and their post count will eventually get reset, leading to not becoming an SRL Junior Member.

This has been discussed many times before - it may seem ineffiecient, but it is more efficient than nothing - a lot more.

Yes - also, the Free For All scripts is what gets people here, partly.

I disagree with you about the more spam part. Because the first thing people do is register, look for there free sciprt, and post, "Omg this is good".

I agree with everyone has leached, i mean when i came here i also wanted scripts, Although once i found out how scar worked, i wanted to script right away, Maybe im the only one?. but heres my point, If we take out Free scripts but keep First scripts available, we both win, because our scripts are getting less spammed, And the new users are still getting scripts. Also the user's that posted there script in the First Script Section are getting more feedback, maybe some new users spam and maybe some will test, and actually give some proggys or bugs.

You can lead people in 2 ways - with a carrot or with a stick. You can beat them into following you with the stick (aka stopping them from seeing scripts) or you can get them to follow you with a carrot (aka an incentive to script). I find this forum has a good balance between the two - it gives new users the incentive to make a few posts to access to good scripts. They could of made it all like SRL members where every user has to convince us that they're good enough to join the forum or it could be like other forums and just be a huge free for all. Luckily, it is neither and balances the two while providing advanced scripter's a haven to hide away in and the newer members a lot of scripts to hopefully entice them into scripting. If I had to choose one way to limit the amount of leachers, then I would go with a spelling test to see how many words they spell correct per 100. Any higher than 10 spelled wrong, then they have to wait a week before trying to register again. Or an IQ test.

Well, you are saying that people are spamming to get the 10 post count, but people are spamming in the junior member script threads as well, so that can't really be that they are spamming to get the 10 post count, they are just spamming because they have nothing better to do.

If all SRL members spammed like leechers then n3ss3s would be on like a billion posts! (I just used you as the example as you have the longest longevity)

If they wanted to solve the whole leeching problem, then they should just make you have to prove yourself before you can start posting and viewing all the scripts etc…

But at the end of the day, the scripts given in the free scripts section will probably end up getting their character banned eventually, if they really wanted to benefit then they'd be smart enough to learn to script themselves.

Personally, I think you should get the rights to see the forums by contributing, posts counts mean shit. Anyone can make a few dumb ass posts and wait around for a week, I don't see how those members benefit the community in any way. If they're willing to learn and prove themselves to join the forums then I think they're the type of people we want in the forums.

But that's just my opinion.

I agree with what 1337 added to the discussion. Although the free for all scripts are nice, they probably do lead to a banning of your account because of their lack of efficiency and player-emulation. They do not work as well as the scripts that are available after a person proving themselves and thus an incentive is made to learn scar scripting. A logical progression would be starting at Free for All scripts and seeing they work and going for the SRL Junior Members scripts. After that, people see that there is a lot more to gain by learning and want to become a SRL Member. This system works.

If you wanted it to work like that, it would end up with a caste system on steroids with everyone being classed and judged on their scripting ability and a lack of community as people have their gangs. Not to mention you would end up turning away a lot of would-be good scripters if they had stayed long enough because they didn't like the system or were ignored or abused because they were new. It is impossible to judge a persons potential on 1 post - only their opinion.

No, I've seen alot of people go from nothing to becoming incredibly talented at languages (be it PHP, C++, Java, Actionscript etc..), and you can see it from the start. If someone has the desire to learn and achieve then that desire starts at the beginning.

As for the whole 'gang' situation, I doubt it would be like that, if it were, then I suspect it would be more 'one person better than another'… And so on. I personally think that would motivate people to constantly get better, always going that step further, which is what this forum needs if it's going to keep advancing.

Your comment about it turning people away the fact that they have to work for it. Fuck them. When people came up to you and asked you for free gold pieces, sure you'd give them a bit once or twice, but then it gets fucking annoying so you give them advice instead. Noobs have to realise that if they want to get anywhere they've got to put some work into it - last time I checked these forums weren't a charity.

In response to your 'people geting ignored' point I constantly see more talented scripters giving the noobs advice here and I don't see them getting abused either. I don't see why that would change if we changed the system?

Very nice post. I don't like the idea of spelling test. Most people who say things like "u r" know how to spell "You are". (Wait a minute how the fruit are you supposed to have a spelling test on the Internet……..) anyways….. I can't spell for my life, but I like to believe I'm somewhat useful to this forum.

Personally i was a leecher in the beginnging. The free section is a great idea because the best way to learn (if you want to) is looking at scripts. The reason i started scripting is because i couldn't get regular scripts to work :P

i have to agree that the free scripts were what drove me to this forum

the junior member scripts are what motivated me to frequently come back

and the free scripts and the difficulty i had learning how to use them helped me begin to actually understand and learn exactly what i was doing and what the script was doing.

Leechers are something you need to deal with (sorry if I sound mean) the SRL Junior Member section still exists because scripters need people to test scripts and report errors. if they closed the section off to people who don't script then you would also be closing it off to the other members who aren't SRL members, but aren't leechers who post feedback.

1. I wouldn't believe about scar without this places.
2. I didn't want to leach, cause I loved the idea of making MY OWN scripts.
3. #2 is the reason I hate leachers cause they think they could come here and get things without working for them.

I'm not sure if this is true or not, but don't the administrators' have to manually review the posts before setting them to a Junior Member or a Community Member? Because the system for upgrading them to Junior Member is not automatic.

how the fruit are you supposed to have a spelling test on the Internet

Make them write a minimum of 100 or so words and mark them out of 100 depending on how many they spelt correctly. As far as I'm concerned, people know how to spell, the fact that they're to lazy to type you instead of u makes me instantly think that they're gonna do things like spam, because I see more people spam topics up or just be generally annoying type like that. Of course, I'll judge them more accurately on their general word use or content, but my first impression is that if they're to lazy to type out 2 extra letters, then why should I be lazy enough to give them the benefit of the doubt that they're good, hardworking people.

I agree and I have seen those sort of people. Those are the people who most likely learn about scripting and like the idea. The fact that they can't get decent working scripts won't stop them, so why should we not have other ways to stop the people who will just come here, bitch about a script not working, then never return?

If it were to happen now, I doubt it would as the community has already grown. If it happened closer to the beginning, then it could very well have turned into that. People in society, for example, are instantly assessed based on appearance. On the internet, it's very hard to have your profile wear clothes or have nice hair, so your post count, member group etc. are what people base their first impressions on. It's like how people avoid homeless people on the streets - they don't know them; they could be great people who are funny and witty, but they don't care because of what they look like.

The problem is you can't tell who will be a good scripter and who will not. Often people come here because they want to cheat on RS, not because they're into scripting or because heard of some cool Neopets scripts. I have a few friends on RS who I lent money to when they started and they've since repaid me back and a couple have even become richer than me.

From: 1337.

In response to your 'people geting ignored' point I constantly see more talented scripters giving the noobs advice here and I don't see them getting abused either. I don't see why that would change if we changed the system?

Compare the amount of advanced scripters helping out and compare it the total number. I would say there's probably only a few higher up members who consistently help out in the Scripting Help forum. I know it's often because they don't want to help out at all, and not because they're new members, but if their were 20 different user groups, then you would find that they would stick to their own secret scripting help forum more than the public help forum, because they would feel like more of a community.

I will admit that most of my ideas seem radical, but they are based on more of the long term effects. In the short-term, only a couple of things would change. After a year or so, though, when the forum is full of members who were 'born' into the caste system, then the general effects of it will be shown, but once again, that depends on the people who join and how the 'normal leaders' behave around the general forum.

First off, you haven't been here that long.
There were leechers even knew SRL was a closed private community. *cough*

Fact is, there has been and will always be leechers. Many of the great and talented people at SRL started as leechers. I might not be in the talented or the great group but i was here when SRL was private, and i leeched and made about 3 post in about 7 months. Now look at me.

Nothing can be done to prevent leechers, fact of life.
