What do you look for in an MMORPG?

Well I've been developing framework for an MMO (Classes, Storyboard, Races, PvP System, Combat System) and I figured that if I want to make a successful MMO I probably should get the opinions of fellow gamers.

Just tell me what you'd like to see in an MMO or what you've seen in the past that you've really liked. The game isn't being developed yet, we're still in the planning stages but it should be on its way by next summer.

non-repetitiveness(e.g. not like runescape)
easy controls/small hud
a point

and then im fine :)

id like a mmo flying or racing game that is like 3d. it annoys me that all the mmo's are like turn based/rpg. there are already enough of those…

I look for pvp but not everywhere.. A game with a point… And a game that doesnt take 10 min to beat or lose intrest in

So what keeps your interest? Do you like having multiple things to do like in RS or do you like just having to do quests and grind?

2008-03-16 13:55:46

make it kinda like the game diablo2… in this i mean no grind but a bunch of quest and stuff… well there is some grind… but that if you haven't been rushed yet… and make it really hard to cheat on…

edit: rushed means you are in a party with someone and you share exp with the higher level guy who is getting a bunch of exp..

edit2: and like you can get to level 80 in a day… but it will take like a month to get to level 99

Ok… but what about races / classes / pvp / pve? I doubt this will be like CS since we're working on an MMORPG, and since we're doing that a first person aspect is kinda ridiculous. If anyone has thoughts on what kind of combat system there should be or how pvp should work please let me know.

If at all possible, keep PvP and PvE separate. What I mean is don't let one aspect of play rule the other. I've seen quite a few games where skill balances for one side of the game (namely PvP) ruined some of the few viable strategies on the other side of the game (I'm looking at you, Guild Wars).

As for races, either have only a few with tangible differences (stat bonuses/penalties, etc) or possibly more with only cosmetic differences.

With classes, you should have at least a few. A couple support classes (healers, buffers, hexers, etc.), a pure ranged class or two (archer, knife thrower, etc.), a few mage classes (elemental specialists, AoE specialist, single target specialist, etc), and various melee classes (warriors, rogue, etc). Just make sure that, as much as possible, each class is balanced. Or at least needed.

I'll post again if I think of anything else.

Guild Wars.

Seperate PvE and PvP.

Look into it ;)

Special Ed

2008-03-17 22:53:16

Look into how they did Guild Wars or learn from how bad that game was? Naw, I don't mean to be judgmental although I personally "very much disliked" that game.

We've developed a list of classes and races although we don't know if we're going to have to many classes. We're thinking of having as system where you basically become the class that you use most. Meaning that in the beginning you will be balanced out and depending on what weapon you take up (sword, staff, dagger, bow, ect) you will "earn" the rank of different classes, and with that your character would get different stat bonuses and skills. And depending on what you train more or less (or evenly) different classes would become unreachable while others would become available.

Ex. You start the game using a staff. You reach level 5 Magic (or something) you are given the rank of "Nooby Wizard" and as a "Nooby Wizard" you get +5 to spell damage, +5 to Spell Area, -5% spell cast time… ect. But later if you keep training only your wizard abilities (maybe like a a tier system) on the third tier of class ranks you won't be able to become a combination of a swordsman and a wizard, but if you only got to tier two you could become a balanced swordsman and wizard but you couldn't have the archer abilities too.

Thats kind of a dumbed down version of the system, but in theory it would work really well… and it would be very diverse and give players a lot of options as to what they would want to do.

Thanks for the advice and replies people, although a little more detail would be beneficial :p

Meh, have your own opinion of Guild Wars. I love the game.

Base your classes off NeverWinter Nights. Specialty classing is more beneficial for you, but you can multi-class if you want. Its based off D&D.

The Only reason I don't want to do that is because every MMORPG out there right now does that… there is nothing new about their classes it just seems to be the same old… warrior, mage, rouge, archer stuff. I do love Neverwinter Nights, and D&D so I can see where your coming from. I'll probably use some ideas that D&D uses but I want this MMORPG we're developing to be as dynamic and unpredictable as possible but still have the same familiarity of other MMORPG's so people aren't confused or get frustrated with the game.

how many classes are you going to include? I think the more you have the better, as long as they are balanced. Also multiracial(only humans? or others too)? I quite like the idea of your class system too:). One more question- how far into making it are you? and will it be 3d/2d.

Special Ed

2008-03-19 19:38:15

We're going to have I think 7 races… I'm not sure though, race will only change your starting location and physical appearance, we may incorporate like a race specific skill or something but we don't know for sure. We're most likely going to have all the races against each other except for 1 neutral or we're going to have 3 v 3 and the 1 neutral… another though we had was a sort of goverment, if you'd every played Rising Force online they kind of have a democracy where people can be voted into the Archon position and they basically rule the government… We may have something like that for each race but we're not sure.

We're not even in the graphic development stages yet, we're basically going to make the game on paper before we start programming it. We're working on finding artists right now too, we've got… 3 artists… I think, but those 3 are only 2d and I met a team of people who are all 3D artists and animators but I haven't talked to them for quite a while so I don't know whats going on with that.

Basically we're at the beginning but we've done a lot of work figuring out class names / balancing. I was actually thinking of making each of the classes into D&D classes and playing a modified campaign to test how balanced each class is.

If you've got any good ideas or just ideas about an MMORPG let me know, because I've found a lot of good ideas just talking to people.

P.S. If you want to see our class "Tree" kinda web sorta thing I'll work on putting that on the computer for ya.

Dan Cardin

2008-03-19 21:28:30

tree web would be cool :). Though im not sure i get what you mean by making the classes in D&D(because ive never played :p).

I think it would be cool if instead of giving stats, for example in runescape there is thieving, their own thing(because thieving really doesnt do anything in rs other than let you thieve), if you made it where a thief was an actual class. Then to limit it a thief would be more of a hand to hand, fast moving, kinda person. Though i dont know how much you would have to do for that kind of thing to work Thats only an example of what i mean. I could probably go into more detail if you dont know what i mean.

Also i think skills like dexterity and intelligence(from games like exile 3) would be cool if they were incorporated.

Special Ed

2008-03-19 23:09:41

Of Course! Thats really the basics of an MMORPG right there… I understand what your saying, and yes like you said thats really a basic form of what would be in a game. I'll work on that tree for you and I'll hopefully have it posted by… friday (48 Hours from now).

I did say base your classes not copy them. If you made a well rounded multi-class system and maybe even specialty classes that have requirements before you can even get (heroic/prestige classes). Would really interest me.

Dan Cardin

2008-04-21 18:53:56

hope this isnt gravedigging :(.

if you're still doing this, then i came up with the idea of being in command of a group of, maybe 5. the goal would be to give each character to have their own specialty to counteract the different advantages that your opponent would have. When one of the people in your party died, you'd have to wait until you got back to a healing place, or something. having people in command of a party of people would let you have higher level enemies/more enemies and the player would have to use more strategy than just leveling up their character.

Im not sure how well it would work in an MMORPG, but it would work well if you just made it a single player game.

i was hoping that since it takes longer than a month to make an mmorpg that it would be ok, if he still looking for suggestions.

and wtf is up with those crazy Japanese people? :p

Special Ed

2008-04-23 15:37:59

I'm still looking for suggestions. That idea is actually already being implemented into a class that we have already called "Master Manipulator". This class controls a number of physical or psionic "puppets" that can attack / defend / cast spells / ect. With this class you'll be able to either summon "psionic" pets, or you can buy different "puppets" that will obey your commands.

Our artists are working on the artwork for our races right now so as soon as they're finished I'll upload the images.

Also I totally forgot about the class tree, I'll see if I can do that sometime soon.

Thanks for all of the suggestions people, I'll still be looking for more!

EDIT: @ Legendary - I'll make a crazy dance-god class just for you :p

Dan Cardin

2008-04-23 16:03:57

i was saying, more of a team kinda thing for everyone, but i think i like your idea better because its more suited to an mmo and psionic puppets sounds cool :).
1-do you keep the puppets? or do they go away after a while
2-if they go away, then how do you determine how strong they are?(their price?)
3-if they dont go away then do they become stronger the longer you use them?

and anyways…yay! i thought u may have given up and not done it, like some of the other game attempts :p.

EDIT: im gonna need a detailed list of stuff that you guys have for stuff to do with the classes :p:rolleyes:

Special Ed

2008-04-24 15:49:02

I'll get a list to you sometime with descriptions… we haven't even started coding yet since we still need more programmers but for developing ideas and systems and what not we're coming along pretty good.

For the "Master Manipulator" there are some puppets that you can buy "Maybe make with like crafting? We haven't decided what we're doing for professions yet". or you can summon them. The ones you buy will stay with you forever just like a weapon would "although they may need repairs". But the ones you summon only stay out for a certain period of time, but you'll be able to put like "skill points" into certain "talents" or "abilities" that will increase the duration of your pet or their magic abilities / combat abilities, ect. None of this is set in stone yet so any ideas are welcome.

Right now in our game we aren't really going to have "classes" per say, it's going to be more of a "you get bonuses to what you use most". So if you use spells a lot depending on your "caster level" you'll get benefits to your character that make your spells better.

So basically we're going to have like 8 different ways that you can fight "Possibly more, possibly less". We have 4 Main Categories (Melee, Magic, Ranged, and Stealth) and each of those categories has 2 Sub Categories. (Melee[Tank, Damage], Magic[Elemental, Holy/Evil], Ranged[Longrange, Speed], Stealth[Trapsetting / Companions, Stealth / Poison]). So depending on what you use from the beginning you'll gain "levels" in the corrisponding category. Then when you reach certain levels of a category you will be awarded a "title" of sorts (Basically your class), and when you get that title you will get extra bonuses to whatever category of combat you've been using.

You can also train multiple skills but there will be a "skill cap" so people can't get Max Level in each style of combat. We'll make it so you can either reach the Max Level in 1… and only one. But you can still get two high level skills or 8 low level skills. Hopefully we'll be able to balance all this out… but it's going to be a challenge.

C++

Although if you know of another language that would be better suited to developing an amazing MMORPG then by all means let me know. This game is going to be pretty computer intensive as well so… ya… :)

Barnes & Nobles…

I'm just reading any books I can get my hands on an asking anyone that knows anything. I had a contact that worked for EA Games but he quit since he moved to Indiana.

I really don't even know enough to start developing it yet, but I at least know enough to pretend I do.

Anyone who's apart of the development team, which right now consists of 6 people that live in my area, 1 in Scotland and 1 in… Indiana… I think.

Why do you ask?

mixster

2008-05-07 15:09:47

Make it able to be played single player or multi player and make sure there are guilds or another form of uniting players and I'll be happy. Though adding a skill system is good too as well all love leveling stats…

Heres a question, my dad has a book for 2003 and was wondering how often C++ is updated, so it could be useful. Just wondering if it changes alot, like SCAR for example.

what i look for in a mmorpg is a combat system that you can always better yourself and hopefully no limit that would be awesome, i would like one sorta like Oblivion but of course online and PvP etc. and being able to create your own armor and make clans, just a game that really is an all rounder. and not having to PAY to play that would make the game that much more enjoyable, and graphics would be good.

I'm suprised that no-one has mentioned that they look for a large playerbase in an MMORPG.

One of the best things I like about MMOs is the community. There's nothing worse than grinding through 500 mobs, with absolutely no-body to talk to. You may as well call it a MSORPG if you don't have a large playerbase.

andrewrox424

2008-05-27 11:17:58

I mainly look for longevity, 'Can I play this for over a week without it repeating?' also quick leveling up to give you that confidence, and when a support base fills perhaps rewards or competitions.

WithoutFear

2008-07-09 16:43:37

assuming you want an MMORPG and not an MMO like others have suggested I would hint towards a very intricate story line. I imagine it is fun to write one, and it creates a better experience for the player. Also i would design a game that caters to every type of gamer. Include PvP and PvE that are both immersing. But the downfall of a lot of those games is you have to pick one or the other (WoW is one of the few that doesn't do this), so gamers can try both. Hope my ideas helped, and good luck!
