SRL vs My Dad

well my dad is a programming manager at IBM (so he yells at people), and as a father son activity we "looked" over my script.
this involved
1. explaining RuneScape to my dad, then explaining why i would want to place such a "Piece of Shit" (first time i'm heard him swear in over a year)
2. adding 400 lines of comments to a 1000 line script
3. changing the names of almost all my procedures
4. arguing over how Wizzup? and Tarajunky are actaully genius and their naming sceme makes sense
5. changing the flow of my program two times to avoid an extra repeat loop
6. making my script pwnage
7. making my script so even a leacher could understand it

the horrible thing is i'm signed up to do it again tomorrow

Lmao……… same question as SantEh.

we have to finish making it the most obviously over explained script in the world
example
AntiRandom(1); //Checks and handles if a random event is happening right now
Mouse(686,53,8,5,true); //Moves the character back to the left so that a DDT point is in view.
FFlag(5); //Wait until the character is within 5 pixels of the flag.
if not DDTMmaster(8, True) then Exit; //Walk to the 8th point on the path back to the bank.
FFlag(0); //Wait until the character is on the flag
Wait(500); //This wait guarantees the character has stopped moving.
RadialRoadWalk(FindColorPro('Road', False),300,420,63, 5, 5); //Plant a flag on the road
FFLag(3); //Wait until the character is near the flag

Haha! Hilarious! No offence…but why would you comment the whole script?

king vash

2008-03-15 04:00:31

My dad thinks it's important that you do so that noob can see what it does (honestly like 100 ppl max have viewed my script and maybe 5 hours of time that wasn't me), and because the procedures don't "say" what they "do" it helps you understand the flow of the program. it did allow him to find one or two redundancies i had in the code

[-jesus-]

2008-03-15 08:43:48

lol, I think those comments might also be so he remembers the procedures for your next "session" XD

i wish my dad was like that(minus commenting the whole script). Helping me with my script and making sure it was efficient, twould be good times :)

lol, poor you, good thing my parents don't have a clue about scripting or programming, but yet they are giving me full support. :D
Although I have to do something ´similar with schoolwork, and that would be essays… my mom looks at every word, if it is spelled correctly, if the usage is correctly, and if it is necessary, or if there is a better word. Then after all the words of a sentence are corrected, she looks at the structure of the sentence, completely changes it, and forms it so that I barely understand it, even though she is explaining it to me (poor language arts teacher XD), and all that usually takes around 3* longer than actually writing the essay. -.-
So yeah, I guess all parents have something we could do without, eh? ^^

My mom is clueless about computers and as for my dad, :'(. Sure would be nice to have someone older and more experienced than me guide me a bit. Still, doing things on my own has given me more experience than I would have gotten if I had gotten help. I guess it depends on how you look at it.

Good luck with your next session, lol. Hopefully you learn something useful for future scripts.

My dad thinks the only programing language is 0's and 1's. So he hates me coding scar. He said its a "waste of your time".

2008-03-15 13:15:21

well at least your scripts would be uber sexy and pwning.

too bad neither of my parents are fans of programming.

i'd be thankful if i was in your shoe.

So you had to explain to him what runescape is? LOL.

Tell him I said that its generally bad practice to comment every line of a program, especially when those who are going to actually read it can tell what those lines do.

king vash

2008-03-15 14:35:25

^ that's what i told him, he cut back, and were doing it like in the srl includes now with descriptions are the top of the procedure (3-5 line long) it's working much better

pure 1993, my mom does that to, off course the first time she didn't do it my essay grade topped 10% but what ever.

I really enjoy working on code with him, but it can be frustrating when he doesn't understand runescape or doesn't like the names of srl procedures.

he just walked in and want to know what i was writing.

intresting father you have,

i agree with the script readability, but sometimes a script can be self-documenting, adding comments where its obvious is just annoying

velocity := current - start; //gets the velocity
time := GetCurrentTime - startTime; //gets the time
distance := velocity * time; //compute the distance
its obvious what the code does, no need for those comments

xml is good for this, even if you've never seen it before, you can tell what it means

<question>Whats 2 plus 2?
<answer>4</answer>
</question>
<question>why is a raven like a writing desk?
<answer>the higher, the fewer :p</answer>
</question

Lmao.

First programming I learned was scar(pascal).
Now were learning some shitty vb in school, but I don't know why, but i'm smartest and quickest at that.

Edit:
0's & 1's, ?!

I just wanted to say that todays programming is based compilators/interprators and different programming languages.

0's & 1's, ?!

LOL, let me guess. He's saying we're idiots and you're defending us.

Well, I have an excuse. My dad wasn't a programmer, he was a worm farmer. We didn't spend evenings poring over scripts, we spent them hunched over in a muddy field yanking perfectly happy worms out of the ground.

I agree with Freddy, it sounds great to me. There always seems to be some sort of family drama with parents, but chances are you'll never find another person in the world that will be as genuinely interested in you succeeding and being happy and achieving your dreams as a parent or sibling. Learn all you can while you can and don't take it for granted.

And if anyone wants to put all this silly scripting behind them and start a career as a worm farmer, let me know and I'll hook you up.

@Tarajunky
Worm farmer, no shit? lol

Back to topic.
Commenting like that I can tell your dad is a programmer lol. For other programming using notes like that is needed as it isn't as obvious in the code as scar is. Thats what I like about scar.

My dad isn't a programmer but he can make anything out of metal. Machinist ftw.

What specialization is your father?

Hmm. Seems cool. My dad usually just says "why cant you fucking do anything else than play that shooting game?" or "do you have to be on that kind of weird sites?" .. He's kinda paranoid about viruses and crap and says SCAR is a stupid program :)

Sounds like my dad, he freaked out when I had scar open once & was scripting, told me to get off my comp untill I told him what it was lol

I wish my dad was liek that.

The only thing he has said about me coding SCAR is "Im sorry… whats it called again?"

My dads not really fussed about me coding or playing runescape, aslong as I get good grades.

My dad can cook and clean. He pretends he can make websites etc. but he can't really ;)
I know I'd love it if I had anyone close to me in real life who liked to script - I can find that my parents can get a bit upset when I'm making a new script and I hide away for an afternoon, so I try to not. They still miss it when I used to want to play monopoly all day with them (and I would win every time and not because they let me.. I think) :)
