Cancer - Ever a cure?

Do you believe that there will ever be a cure for cancer within this century? I hope there is because Cancer is an ass hole, mungrel, bastard, try-hard. If cancer were a human, I'd bash its' ass straight to hell. Because i just had a grandpa that just died from it.

Anyway, back on to the topic. Do you reckon there will be one?

Errm. On topic.

There are too many different types of cancer to have a universal cure. My cousin died of cancer at 10 years. Rare strand.

There can be cures for common cancer (lung, testicular, etc) but you can never fully cure Cancer.

There should be a 'Some Types' in the poll, meaning I wont vote.

Well, there actually is a cure for cancer, just as long as you catch it early on. Someone in my village unforntunately died of cancer about 2 months ago…

There are cures for many forms of cancer, not if you have like 20 tumors all spread across your body.

I truly hope they find a cure, and I'm pretty sure they will. As some of you might know, my father had cancer two times, one time 6 years ago, and now again. As it's very concentrated (one tumor in his bladder, twice at the same spot, but now removed) it wasn't letal. He had the tumor around Christmas. Thursday he has another check to see if it's back. 50% chance it is…

Here is (in my opinion) a simple explanation of why there isn't some 'pill' that cures cancer. (I might be wrong, but I think I am at least getting close to the origin of the problem)

The problem with cancer is, is that it is not a real disease.
It is an uninhibited growth of tumour-cells.
If cells are produced by the body, there is a change they are made with a handicap, you could see this is as a evolution of the cells. (Mutations)
Most of the cells, if they differ from the original ones, kill themself using a certain Enzyme that get's send to the 'sick'-cell by his neightbour cells.
In some cells, this part has not been 'made' when the cell was produced.
The same applies to the part where a cell determines if he has to 'split', and make another cell. (Something alike to mitosis)
If this happens, the cell keeps splitting itself very quickly, thus creating more ills cells that also start splitting themself.

The only real way we have now to cure cancer, is simply ray all the 'sick' (and good cells), with such an intensity that they will (hopefully all) die.

I think it probably will be 'cured' in the 21st centruy, though which part I'm not sure. With technology increasing so quickly, it could be a matter of a decade or it may be that cancer evolves one step further and doesn't get cured at all. However, I think that the end 'cure' for cancer will be involving white blood cells and modifying the tracers they make to attatch to cells with damaged DNA, then the white blood cells killing them, though that is only my theory and I'm not a biologist, so meh.

I think there will be a cure eventually, but not one that works 100%, and if/when they make it - I won't be alive :p

@ Markus: Good luck on Tuesday, hope he is still clean :(

I think that there will be a cure. maybe not in the next 10 or 15 years, but definitely in the 21st century. i mean, look at all of the advances we've made in the past 100 years. unimaginable.

kind of like how in the 50's people thought it would be impossible to get to the moon.

look at us now :)

…No

You are killing yourself.

There is some research on some enzyms going on that seem to only kill the cancer cells, and leaves the normal cells alive. It sounds very hopefull to some cancer patients who can't be cured now.

I saw on a documentary a game in which you kill cancer cells… apparently it's been proven to help stop tumors spreading throughout the body…

and it would help if you actually researched this topic before posting this thread… and do you even know what the world will look like in 50 years? we are discovering at a rate of 42 encyclopedias a day…

As long as their are some smart people left by mid-21st century & not just full of stupid people we should hopefully have a cure.. people just seem to be getting stupider & stupider now adays though…:(

The body doesnt kill Cancer cells because it doesnt realise they are harmful.

The cancer cells have no Hayflick limit, so just keep multiplying and the body thinks everything is ok, because cancer doesnt release Anti-toxins or anything.

You can introduce "viruses" into cancer cells so the body sees them as harmful, or introduce new genes to make tougher cells around the tumor to make them resistant to higher doses of chemo, but alot of people dont know about gene therapy, so they wont have it happening on humans.

I'm not aware of any bold new paradigms for treating cancer. Most research seems to be focused on identifying unique characteristics of cancer cells that can be used to target them for death. I don't think this is a very good approach, because cancer cells and 'cancer stem cells' share many characteristics with normal, helpful stem cells in the body. That's one reason why chemotherapy and radiation therapy are so debilitating. It kills the cancer, but it kills a lot of other helpful cells too.

Another approach has been to prevent tumors from growing by preventing the blood supply from growing. For a tumor to grow, it needs to grow new arteries and veins around it. So if you could stop arteries and veins from growing you could starve the tumor, and at least stop it from growing very large. It's an okay idea in principle, but your body still needs to be able to do routine maintenance itself by growing new blood vessels, so doing it in any sort of long-term preventative way would be harmful.

I think we'll find cures for more types of cancer that work very well. And I think we'll get much, much better at identifying people genetically predisposed to a higher risk for cancer, so that they can get regular screening and intervene early on when it's easier to treat. I think this latter emphasis on medical genomics will have the largest impact over the next several decades.

The game mentioned being found here:

EDIT: I completed the game and felt rather satisfied that I won actually. Made me feel good that I didnt loose :] and/or an imaginary person suffering from cancer didnt die :]

I don't think there's ever gonna be a cure, and innocent people (well sort of) will continue to die.

Richard

There will become a cure for some cancers but the cells will continue to mutate and we won't be able to keep up. I guess cancer is one of the ways that we keep the population of the planet down, at other peoples expense…

Honestly if u compare 50 years ago to what we have now surly we will have a cure for cancer i mean thinking about it it makes me sad that ima get older so i cant experience all the things that are going to be released to mankind. But i really do hope they cure cancer other wise i might have to get a new jaw in the near future (h)

They already have a cure.

nikos

2008-03-14 21:55:55

they are just waiting to release it for a while because its all business… all the other companies and such are involved in cancer treatment and would all lose money if it were to be released now.

madman5809

2008-03-14 23:20:46

Y would they do that though u would atleast know of it but just have it as high dollar i couldnt see how the companys could just sit by while people die of cancer….

Do you understand what would happen if a cure was discovered? Everybody would want it. Thats bad.

madman5809

2008-03-14 23:51:18

hows it bad noone would have to go through the pain of cancer and it would help out the economy with the mass amounts of people wanting the cure..
