Is this PSU good?

:)

I think I may have found a decent PSU, for a decent price. (With the help of Mr. Klean, of course ^_^)

Could you guys tell me your opinions on it?

Thanks!

Thats the best deal I could find on a fan like that! Looks good to me man… although for some reason I doubt that 120mm fan is going to be quiet…. -.-

Aw :(

I don't want to buy it just to buy it, but I would like to get started on this project.

I am looking to get a few more reviews. (Preferably by Tarajunky :))

Edit: Just realized what your avatar was! Can't say I particularly liked that anime, though…

Yeah, that power supply looks sweet. Larger fans are quieter, since they can move more air at lower rpm. If you use a small fan they have to spin fast and you get a high pitched whine.

That's really a monster power supply. That's the kind of power supply you need when you have an overclocked CPU, plus dual high powered video card in SLI, plus a bunch of hard drives, optical drives, etc. I'm sure it would be more than adequate for your needs, if not overkill. :)

If you want very high quality power supply, that one seems to be fine for a reasonable price. If you want to save some money, there are other options out. there.

Personally, I've always had good luck with power supplies. I've never had one break down on me, or cause instability problems.

If figure you could buy both those cheap power supplies for the same price as the one you posted even before getting the rebates back, and if one doesn't work out you would still have a backup.

Plus you could save some money to put towards other components.

Thank you :)

The reason I was thinking about that one, was because Klean said the other one I was thinking about,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1273332&CatId=1079

Wouldn't be enough.

(05:18:48 PM) Mr. Klean: Ultra makes good products, although depending on what you build, 500w may be a bit weak
(05:19:51 PM) Jason2gs: Oh, I was told 600W was more than I'd use
(05:19:59 PM) Mr. Klean: It all depends on what your system if
(05:20:00 PM) Mr. Klean: is*
(05:20:21 PM) Jason2gs: What if I'm not going to require too good of a GFX card? That's what requires the most power, right?
(05:20:48 PM) Mr. Klean: CPUs are the top power suckers, Drives are second, GFX are third.
(05:21:01 PM) Mr. Klean: Well drives when they are running
(05:21:33 PM) Jason2gs: System being the OS, or the setup? :p
(05:21:38 PM) Jason2gs: I'm guessing the latter?
(05:21:59 PM) Mr. Klean: Setup
(05:22:06 PM) Mr. Klean: CPU, mobo, RAM and so on
(05:22:10 PM) Jason2gs: Ah
(05:22:53 PM) Mr. Klean: If I remember right, from what I read on my 2.6ghz dual on Localcooling, it took around 130watts of power in just the CPU
(05:23:00 PM) Mr. Klean: Thats idle
(05:23:15 PM) Jason2gs: :(
(05:23:35 PM) Mr. Klean: I don't even dare how much power my Quad core is sucking at OC'd under full strain
(05:24:31 PM) Jason2gs: So with a Quad core, you'd need a lot more than 500W?
(05:24:36 PM) Jason2gs: (W or w?)
(05:24:45 PM) Mr. Klean: I think its w
(05:24:53 PM) Mr. Klean: My quad has a 750 in it.
(05:24:57 PM) Jason2gs: :O

I also found this one that's 600w…

Except… That one is 70 bucks, but for ten bucks more I can get the 750watter in my first post ^_^

There are a few calculators out there that you should try.

Try plugging in a few different configurations and see what they tell you.

Thank you :)

*Sigh*

So many choices…

I think 600 may be enough. What happens if you get a PSU that's slightly less than what you need? Will it be able to juice out more?

In my experience, the PSU is one of those components that either works or it doesn't. If a 600W PSU is adequate, then paying $200 more for a 1000W top-of-the-line one is wasted money.

It's not like a video card where paying $100 more gives you very obvious performance improvements. Or a monitor, where you sit and look at it every day. The best power supply is one that you put in then never think about it again.

If the difference is only $10, then just go with your gut. If your gut tells you to get the 750W one, then do it. There's no reason to quibble over that amount of money, and possibly to regret it later on.

[Offtopic] I think Desert Punk is fking hilarious (nothing more) not a traditional anime though [/offtopic]

Yea the only reason I say the big fan will probably be loud is because the supply i had, had a 120mm fan on it and it sounded horrible… maybe it was just that one, but since I got a new one idc anymore.

I thought it was… Odd…

And what was up with the theme song video? You don't use real people :|

Oh, sorry for double post, but I have a question!

Should there be any incompatibilities between the mobo I choose, and the PSU I choose? From what I've read, the only way you can go wrong is if you buy a 24 pin PSU, and your mobo is 20 pin (or vice versa). Is that true?

Reason I'm asking, is because I don't know if I should buy this PSU right now, or wait until I have more of an idea of what I want to build.

Most modern PSUs work with either type of power connector.

They will usually have a 20 pin with a little attachment to extend it to 24 pins. If you don't need the attachment, you don't plug it in, or you snap it off, or whatever.

Awesome. So it's 100% safe to order it now, with no risk whatsoever of it not marrying up to other components?
