Maintenance / Helping WT-Fakawi

Special Ed

Well this thread is really just a response to what WT-Fakawi had to say in his advice thread, and I think we should start thinking of things we can do to accomplish his goals and keep SRL going strong.

[1] - Keep the place neat.
  • Archive / Delete threads that are over 30 Months Old (I don't know if this helps with bandwidth but I'm assuming it would…)
  • Remove / Combine / Edit Stickies to make them more appropriate and organized. (Change names to fit their purpose more)
  • Prune Inactive Members (I'll even volunteer to do it…)
  • Debate re-organization of Forum Categories (Name Changes / Are they needed / Descriptions / Ect)

[2] - Be sure to roll in talent. Better you vote yes on the basis of attitude than scripting powers.
  • Talent Scouting Mission?

[3] - Keep the place dynamic. Get the new SSRL's in! Organize! Get the right people for the right things.
  • Start a new single player Scripting Competition?
  • Talent Scouting Mission?
  • Anyone deserving of Mod-ship / Dev-ship / Admin-ship?

[4] - Release SMART to the public. Forget about the framerate, just release it.
  • Lets all severely pester Ben… and get some one to write the release post.
  • Make a comprehensive tutorial using all the current SMART Tutorials.

[5] - Make a team that publishes announcements to the audience. I made this place mostly all by myself, I typed my ass of at all times, spending hours every day creating content. But as said, I will be idle. Create a new ruleset.
  • SSRL / Announcement Team? I'd be willing to help, but should this be an SSRL Member and above thing or should it be anyone who is good / trustworthy enough.
  • Ruleset it really already underway with this… New Rule Set. We should actually get to updating the ruleset with these, but we should probably vote on the rules first.

[6] - Be mature and keep your distance in matters that require wisdom.
  • Everyone remember SSRL is supposed to be secret.
  • Use reason in making decisions.

[7] - Follow the leaders.
  • Ehh… maybe later…

[8] - Be honest. Don't be fooled by the ill tempered.
  • Honestly truly is the best policy.
  • Stay away from incidents like the ones w/ Solarwind.
  • Try not to piss any other communities off.

[9] - Listen to Wizzup?
  • Well… what does Wizzup? have to say about this?

I think if we get all the SSRL Members or at least the active ones working on these things we can bring about a great change within SRL and hopefully propel the ideals that WT-Fakawi has brought to us. I know I'm willing to help with this task but w/o the help of Administrators, Mods, and fellow SSRL and SRL Members the job becomes an entirely, almost impossible, feat.

I know you just want to help, but don't get all gun-ho over this. Fakawi is taking a leave a absence, this doesn't mean we have to make-over the whole site. We can survive without him.

No.
We have gone over this again and again and again.
The answer to pruning users is NO
Though yes I too think the stickies need a little bit of revising aswell as some of the layout.

As of now Sumilion just became admin, and we still have Nielsie, Ray, and I plus some devs with mod powers, so I don't see us needing anyone for that anytime soon. It's pretty well covered.

Who is to say they are not deserving? We are all here for different reasons, and if a "higher up" feels someone should or shouldn't be here, they would veto the decision and deny/allow whomever should(n't) be here.

Just because Fakawi is gone for a little bit doesn't mean the site needs a complete overhaul.

New rule-set should get a mass poll and Smart should be released soon. Everything else is over the long term.

I agree on two things, the others are sorta ify-ish
- SMART release
- Sticky organization (including 'official' notices)

+ More detailed SRL update explanations would be really neat; though I understand if nobody wants to write them.

I guess SSRL and above will be in charge of SRL (Wizzup? in the lead). But whatever we SSRL's need to do, will have to be done through an admin. I, for one, would volunteer to clean up the stickies and organize them, but I can't edit anything not made by me. I would be fine with sending the content to an admin/moderator.

Also, I promise I won't use as many smileys as I normally do :p

Or we go one as we have been for the past who knows how long?

We aren't that dependent on what Fakawi does. The forum will run fine with him gone. This isn't a shot at Fakawi because I've looked up to him since day one. The fact is, him leaving doesn't all of a sudden throw us in darkness. We have plenty of Mods and Admins who are capable of doing what needs to be done. And as for SSRL, I doubt that will change, SSRL in way of forum decisions are like the advisory panel. You get to voice your opinions and they will probably taken into deeper consideration then non SSRL but in the end, its the admin's decision.

So can we please all get over the "Fakawi's leaving, we're incapable of surviving" mentality? I'm sure he'd be pretty disappointed right now if he saw that this is how we react when he leaves.

I think if we release SMART to the public, it will cause a lot more spam. People couldn't even install srl right before… Of course that's not my decision, or anyone else's except ben's.

Here's my thoughts.

The SRL forums runs itself. The srl members + help run this forum and I think we keep it running pretty good and clean. But to clean up a lot of spam… I see this happen a lot

Noob: how to I become a srl junior member?

srl member: You need to be here a week and have made 10+ helpful posts.

Noob: OK cool, thanks!

another srl member: All you have to do is be here for a week and make 10 or more helpful posts.

different noob/registered user: 10+ helpful posts and 1 week longtivity.

another srl member: I'm sick and tired of all these people asking stupid questions!

Mod: Closed.

The mods/admins can't go through every thread, and some of us ssrl members (me) have no life and would love to have some way to help the forums run while we're browsing through the forums and helping people or whatever.

I think that if (and I'm not saying this because I want more power, because I know somebody is going to say that) we were given the powers to open and close threads, even that power over infractions, the forums would stay much more spam free. We could find the topics that could be closed before people spam them up and (possibly) before people get flamed (or at least too much).

Closing and opening threads doesn't show the non ssrl people who did it either unlike infractions. So it's not like they'd be onto us. We just wouldn't say closed or we'd have some code message if the mods/admins needed to know who closed the thread.

I think that the admins should consider this because it would lighten the load for them, cause less spam, cause less people getting flamed, and just make these forums 99.9% clean instead of the 90-95% clean they are now.

Just a suggestion. I'm "voicing my opinion even though the admins have the final decision". :)

~JAD

And when I say ssrl should have this power, of course I mean devs too :)

More thoughts:

- This sort of reaction is normal, no matter who/what we are, when one's topmost leader leaves, it's natural to 'panic'. We'll be sorted within a couple days, I'm sure.

- SSRL should be able to open and close threads.

- All active dev's should be promoted to SSRL.

- Hex edited/Fixed SMART should be released through SVN (md5 checks in SRL if you want to make sure it's a pain to 'fix' (encrypt the stats sending file and add md5 checks into it?))

When did Sum get promoted? Grats!

I also agree on the opening and closing of threads. Seems more discreet than infractions. I agree on pretty much all of your points Special also. And as already has been stated, Fakawi leaving does not mean death, we have plenty of more than capable devs, mods, and admins.

I know I said locking and opening threads is more important than infractions, but infractions are important for emergencies when somebody needs to be banned (urpalsfromrunecity the claw couldn't have banned if it wasn't for the infractions privilege).

If I had to pick which one is more important, I'd say opening and closing threads, but the other one is of course still important for at least emergencies :)

ZephyrsFury

2008-01-30 21:01:12

I agree. Closing threads will ease the work load that our mods have to deal with. Since the latest revision release there have been hundreds of threads asking for the solution to simple problems. To expect a couple of mods to deal with this is not effective IMO. By allowing SSRL to close thread you're allowing an extra dozen or so people to help without actually making them moderators.

I wasn't trying to go gun-ho but I believe that we need to at least make a list of things to do… I didn't mean "OK guys now that Fakawi is gone we need to do all this stuff so SRL doesn't fail!" I just meant this topic as a place for discussion about what you think we do need to do and eventually how we will go about doing it.

For the pruning thing… yes I know, but the only reason I said it is because of the massive leave-ature of people from SRL I surmised (love that word) that removing Users that are inactive would increase bandwidth. I don't know a lot about servers so I don't expect to be right, although from what I do know I think it would help at least a little.

Also, I didn't mean to say I think there are people who are undeserving of SSRL I meant SRL and now that I think about it, there is really nothing we could do about it anyway… Please don't think that I feel that someone doesn't deserve to be here.

Also Hobbit, I doubt Fakawi would be disappointed that I'm trying to be proactive, and I'm not saying that since Fakawi is gone we can't do anything, its more of a combination of Fakawi throwing out things that he believes should be done and a combination of me coming back to SRL since I haven't been able to get on in quite a while. I don't want to make it sounds like "OMG Fakawi is gone we better to everything he said or we can't make it!" Although I can see why you gathered that mentality from my post.

So from what I've read….

[1] - Increase SSRL permissions to allow locking / unlocking of threads.
[2] - Release new ruleset.
[3] - Release SMART - PROS / CONS?
[4] - Organize Stickies and create "Official Stickies".
[5] - Active Dev's promoted to SSRL.

BTW Congratz Sumilion.

Wizzup?

Yes. ;)
I was waiting on Ben to maybe make a version which is not so easy to hack into. ('hack' as in changing the fps.)
However, Ben never keeps his old source. He only has the source of the 'reflection' smart. So I guess we will have to do it with the current one in SRL Members. I don't see a big problem as long as KillerDou doesn't tell everyone about his 'find'.

PM him with the threat of a ban if he publicizes he findings. If he tells people on MSN that will at least be relatively small scale.

Start threatening people, and the whole community starts to decline.

Either release it right, or bear the consequences of a half-prepared release.

My thoughts exactly… so its really up to Ben to make the changes in SMART before we can really do anything more w/ the release.

Lets just release it with the FPS bar. Wont do any harm.
