Is it possible to crash an rs server?

Not to take an offensive attack on runescape, but I was wondering today while taking a shower (which is when all of my ideas come to me) if it is possible to get a whole lot of people to log in at once and crash the runescape servers.

would it be the death of a server?

and what i mean by alot of people logging in at once is finding a world with like 1500 people, create a bot that quickly logs in a file then logs it out and repeats, and having a large amount of people do it

would sending that much information overload a server?

just kindof wondering. maybe ill have to test it. set up 5 computers, add a couple of vms for each, find a world and run an auto log in and log out.

Don't hate just because I have ideas of terrible things :)

It would probably work but not with only 5 comps + vms… You would need WAY more than that. It really doesn't do that much when your log in/off.

well any ideas on a way to overload?

something that uses a large amount of server runtime %?

Well, you would need like 600 characters talking and spamming (while not getting banned) on the server non-stop, IMO.

hmm, what about when you change areas on a minimap? does it not lag sometimes? what if you had 20 or 30 bots doing that? would it slow down the server?

maybe ill try tomorrow

They have 2000 people limits on servers meaning that's how much their servers can take (with some added room for safety) so I doubt you logging in with 5 people would do anything at all. Or even all 2000 people logging in and logging out at once.

There have been maxed out worlds (2000) with people rioting (Tons of spam)

So the answer is, through anything characters can do in the game…. UBER unlikely

Okay, thanks everyone for your input.

i guess back to the drawing board for me :(

i think the only way to crash an RS server would be to get a botnet onto it

Yakman

even a botnet wouldn't crash it, it would only slow it down and stop it accepting other connections for the duration of the attack, in other words, it would deny other clients their service.

and it would take a very large amount, jagex isn't some little server operating out of their garage, they are multi-million pound company, if they see their bandwidth getting used up, they'll just buy some more.
and probably send lawyers to your house

Yeah, I'm sorry to say that these are most likely the things that they laugh out loud at their coffee breaks.

But, the solution is simple, only thing I need to do to crash the game is to open rs first time of the day - "Yay! Error_game_crash!"

Though that doesn't kill a server…

I remember being in a server right after an update with swiftquick and the people count went from 50 to 1000 in 1 minute and the server was stalling but it didn't crash

Why would you want to crash a server anyway?

Why not?

And I know this is virtually impossible, but say you had a server with 2000 people on it, and they all teleported at he same time. What would that do?

Most actions are done to get some kind of reward, avoid a punishment, etc. What would this do for you? Why make trouble for someone and not get anything out of it??

And if everyone teleported at once, they would all be in a new location.

nah, runescape is prepared for that, look world 1, 2, 3, 4 ect. ot trafic here and it dont get crashed..

Have a ton of people summon a familiar and drop pets all in one area

DDos?

It's possible, but its usually a freak accident. I've been on a server when its crashed – not when it's updated, by the way – where all of the users got kicked, except for about 50 at the GE, and then they got kicked. It was pretty weird.

malotthouse

ooh a ddos might do it. that would be interesting to try.

id hate to be caught though

Edit: or pull a MyDoom. if anyone has ever heard of that. almost 4 years ago though

You could probably crash a server if you had a ton of people all stand in one spot and drop a bunch of stuff there over and over again, with enough lag something bad might happen, I don't know about a 'crash' but it'd be fun to watch.

Something like that happened on my scenario… It is extremely possible.

Could be possible say everyone met at tutorial island, or like 1800 people are already in the world, we get 500 people to log in at once, but i highly doubt it will work because some will get in before others

malotthouse

it would have to be a precise second. because all of the data would have to try to come from and to the server at the same time, overloading it.

i like the idea of watching something like this too… be funny

Smartzkid

So…you want to organize for months for just a few seconds of lag?

Jason2gs

2008-02-02 02:07:11

Hm…

My advice to you, would be to go try taking another shower.

(That is, unless you only said that to sound cool. In which case… Epiphanies in the shower don't help ^_^)

You could make a script that logs in, teles to varrock, logs out, logs in, teles to lummy, logs out and so on. Would that work??

GoF

2008-02-02 12:54:20

Hm. I think there could be more practical ways to DDoS than pressing the login button.

And what would this do? The servers are built for possibly 2000 people logging in and 2000 people tele'ing. You running the script won't do anything. Too slow.

malotthouse

2008-02-02 21:40:00

by the way, yes i would organize for months to cause a crash of a server for a few seconds.

it would be a self accomplishment :)

anyways, we have already established that teleing and logging in and out probably won't do it.

though think about running between two different sectors of runescape (like you know, when the minimap has to change, you can run back and forth and it will lagg a bit.) maybe that would be enough usage to do that.

but back to my point of the mydoom, that was microsoft's website that they were attacking. just imagine how many people were infected with that bug, and it didn't even effect the website. if runescape were 1/10th as protected as microsofts website, there would be a very slight chance that we would even put a dent into the server.

i don't know, just something to think about

It would be so cool to crash a Runescape server after a really bad update like the 3k limit, see if they would get the message.

They wouldn't get the message, because they don't care. Honestly, the people who hate the update may be the majority, but the players who are addicted to the game and will continue playing are an even larger majority. They can replace dragons with pink ponies and people would still play the game because of the time they have spent on it and the addiction.

lakerz is 100% right. Jagex realized that if they updated to this, they would lose alot of players, but also alot of botters. and they also knew that the people who are addicted to the game would still play.

they could even raise the membership price to 10$ and people would pay it. its because some people have put so much time into the game that they don't want to throw it all away.
