18 September 2006 - Progress update
We're sure some of you are wondering when the next update will be and what we've been up to lately - So we thought we'd tell you a little bit about what's been going on. We haven't forgotten about you! We have just been (very) busy upgrading Runescript (our custom scripting language that we use to write the game).

Before we can start using the new version, we need to make sure that everything still works and that the changes won't break existing content. With a game as complex as RuneScape this has been an enormous task, hence the gap in updates last week. Indeed key people have been working evenings and weekends as well to get it all done!

Naturally we are still working on the types of exciting updates you'd expect, but 'under the hood' upgrades like this are also essential to help us do new types of content and continue to raise the standard of future releases.

We are aiming for an update later this week assuming the rest of our internal testing continues to progress without issue. If you're wondering what it will be, do read the behind the scenes document for September. We are still planning on sticking to that schedule and releasing the updates we said we would this month. And that's in addition to the Runescript upgrade work!

Thanks for your patience!

I don't know if changing Runescript changes anything on the outside but I thought I'd post it here anyway. If this means nothing to us call me a dumbass and delete this or whatever.

im no java programmer, but think it wont have any changes that affect scar, maybe SCSS if we're unlucky, but i think it will hurt hacked clients greatly, not too sure about IBOT though

good thing that you posted this, now you we just have to wait for Moparisthebest to come along and say "aarrgghh we're all doomed!" ;) (im joking of course)

i do know that World of Warcraft uses a modified C++ and that annoys anyone trying to read it

i GUARNTEE there will be some type of dupe glitch, or killing outside wild glitch, or something, cause a programmer forgot a { or ; etc, i think ibot will be fine, it doesnt modify client at all, it more modifies YOUR java, not sure on that one

Runescript, is probably either a simple xml style, or java classes that extend the server.
(Think of ibot scripts)
Nothing new in client.
Just the server is reading from its own files rather than having hardcoded java inside it.
And then sending the client new info
Hmmm, say hello to new quests probably not even needing a server reboot! ;)

Agreed on a glitch, but missing a ; will not even let things compile
Though a careless programmer fixing a script and adding a } in the wrong place could be catastrophe.
Imagine an accidental infinite loop that gives you exp and items over and over forever!
And, a glitch could crash the server and cause mass chaos in unsaved games :(h):
