Maybe a little brief history of rs cheating? Or of my background in it…
It all started (to my knowledge), when people realized how repetitive the game was. The first I heard of cheating, was when I first played the game. They had an offline version of runescape available for download. This offline version stored your character stats, in your registry. It was also compatible with the online version. You could train a bit in the offline version when you weren't allowed on the internet (everyone had 56k dial up back then).
Of course, this was the only runescape stat edit to this date, a bunch of people edited all their stats to 99, and of course got banned. Jagex then took this offline runescape permanently offline :)
After that, some of the first java bots were released. This was way before Scar was even though of. I can't remember the FIRST rs cheating community I was ever in, it was 6 years + ago, but I gained my respect by making people signatures. Although my signature making skills, really were appalling (a 5 year old could do better on ms paint), People seemed to respect my work, and like me. At this time in runescape, there was no wilderness, dueling hadn't been invented, and the entire rsc map was ruled by clans (seeing as it was free pk anywhere). Also, there were no level restrictions on Armour, as well as runite being the best Armour in the game.
American bot:

You'd often see level 3's with rich friends, walking around with full rune, and be like 'wow!'. Also by this time, party hats and rares weren't invented, and you got to choose your 'class' when you created a new account. The classes went something like:
Mage
Warrior
Miner
And some others.
There really was no point to the classes at all. Jagex were planning on expanding it, but ended up either failing, or being too lazy, and scrapping the whole 'class' idea.
This is also where my digital art obsession kicked off.
I was majorly into rsc pking back then, and I saw one guy with a crappy border around an animated gif of an rsc character K0'ing another one. At the time, I was genuinely stunned by it. Thought it was incredible. Thought to myself, "hey, I'm going to learn to make that". And so I did.
I was very proud of myself, and offered my graphics services to others. As my digital art skills grew, so did the java bot communities. They got bigger and bigger, and everyone started cheating.
Luckily for me, I got in early, when they were just starting to kick off. I was usually the 'graphic artist' of every rs cheating community I was in. Made many banners for forums.
The first community I distinctively remember, is RichyT's. He made a java bot called SBoT. Had excellent and original features. These features included Auto catching (a method of rsc pking, in which your victim couldn't escape), which clearly made me love the bot. A guy named Waffendennis (who also happened to work for jagex/something along those lines, he was kept very mysterious.) helped him with it. Waffendennis always used to leak Richy the source for the new updates, and anything he needed. This way, SBoT constantly stayed alive. I went on Richy's Irc channel a lot of the time, talking to waffendennis, and generally acting like an annoying noob.

Compiling scripts:

After using a jailguard fighter with death walking for months, Jagex decided to input a 'sleep' system into rsc (it finally dawning on them that 90% of players were botting). This basically meant, if you wanted experience, you had to have a sleeping bag in your inventory, and you had to sleep every time your experience bar was at 100%.

When you slept, you would have to read from an image, and input the what the image said, just basic image verification.

Firstly, richy made a system for all botters, a little program that read the image, then sent the image to someone else, who would then tell your bot what the image said, and input it for you. This worked great. It was an immediate solution to an immediate problem. The system relied on points, so, for every word you read for someone else, you got 1 point, which meant someone else had to input a word for you. The community really did support each other, until one day, someone released a cracked version of it (which was basically a points hack, meant you didn't have to input any words for anyone else).
As you could have imagined, all the leechers started using the cracked version, and in the end, nobody helped each other out.
A few weeks later, someone (Who I forget) released a program that read and input the letters for you. It was called FurbyOCR (Optical character recognition). The maker charged a lot of real world money for the program, and of course, it was cracked. ELMO OCR was a predecessor.
Waffendennis ended up leaving the scene, and so did Richy (releasing his java bot source as he left). From there, small java bot communities burst out everywhere. Everyone had their own bot, with a different name, basically, all Richy's code, with different colored text. SkulltorchaScriptable (STS) was one of these which later turned out to be a success.
From there, cheating communities went severely down hill. I joined a few, but they were just populated by leechers, people that were only in it to get what they wanted, then they'd leave. Maybe they'd come back if they needed an update, but they'd never post.
A few glitches were discovered back in rsc days, but always kept private.
I read all about autorune, and managed to get myself an auth. Loved using it for the time it was out and under kaitnieks control. I was also one of the very few to dupe using it, before it was patched.
Alot more can be found on autorune, here.
I won't go into it, seeing as it's already documented, I remember the little default delphi icon it had. Good times.

Dropping blue p-hats:

After Autorune finally died, Kaitnieks created SCAR (Shite Compared to Auto Rune).
After the rsc bots starting dying off, RS2 was released!
At first, I hated it. I kept all my characters on rsc servers. When rs2 came out, I quit. I'd had enough of it.
Some time later, I returned, thought I'd give it another try.
I joined Odie5533's community, and had no idea how to use this new program.
At first, I was highly disappointed. I couldn't even move my mouse while it was running! And it wasn't even accurate!
Also, 90% of the scripts I pressed the big green button on, didn't even work!
Mainly because I was using wrong scripts with wrong includes, or includes I didn't even have (I didn't know that at the time :p).
The includes like Osi and boxbreaker, were constantly getting updated and improved. It rendered the very few scripts available for them, useless.
I bought an autofighter in scar from genodemon (now the creator of iBot), and many famous scripters released excellent scripts (such at Hatlesscow and Odie5533). It was a good start to cheating at rs2, they layed the foundations for rs2 cheating.
A bunch of stuff happened after that, I believe Aryan was invented? But I never used it. Just saw hundreds of bots in all rs2 worlds.
Eventually, all includes died/came together, and Srl was invented.
And here we are now :)
If you read up to here, good job, was a bit of a journey. Also, if I got anything in the wrong order, or missed anything out, I'll gladly fix it/add it, just post :)
