Java for USB?

I'm currently trying to pimp out my USB stick. I figured Java would be a good thing to put on it…

Anyone happen to know of a USB edition for the Java SDK?

Edit: Mod mind moving this to public forum?

Just about any flash drive now can hold the whole jdk complete with source, docs, and all. In fact, I've got netbeans 5.5 and three java versions (1.4.2, 1.5.x, 1.6.0) on mine with lots of other stuff and plenty of room to spare. Then again, I've got a 4gb drive.

Nerd. 4GB? I've only got 1GB I run scar and my hacking stuff from.

Well, I wasn't worried about it holding Java. I just didn't know what to do about system variables and registry edits. I guess system variables won't be that much of a problem, but registry edits? Does the Java installer not bother with those?

Edit: Ooh, I think that's the second time Benland's posted on one of my threads :o

I got a 4 gb one :) I suppose I am close to becoming a Math-God?

Jw Mike (AKA Jason), why do you need a 'Mobile' version? Is your flash drive rly small? o_O

No, it's 1 GB :| Well enough to hold what I need when I'm not near my laptop.

And what do you mean, what do I mean? I mean Java SDK for when I'm on a computer that doesn't have Java installed…

Well, my Java Runtime Enviorment is only 50 MB at most. SDK must be different, sorry, I don't mess with Java much :/

It's not the size I'm worried about. It's all the other stuff on the system the Java installer messes with. More accurately, I'm not sure what other stuff Java messes with. That's why I came here.

Edit: Doh! You said 'why'. Not 'what' My bad. Same answer though.

Oh, an could a mod please move this to the public forum?

There isn't a java version that you can put on a usb and make it the 'default java' whenever you plug it in. However, you can specify the path to the runtime files for any compiling/running you need to do. What you might want to do is save the latest jdk installer onto the drive and install it on any computer you use ;)

such large USB sticks you have, must be making up for something else ;)

Iv got a 64MB one, had it for years, iv got Scar, and GCC and for java, i have this little app called SIDE, its about 1MB and it can compile source code and has a syntax highlighter and all that, but you need JRE on that computer to run it, the program is quite buggy, but its open source and iv fixed some of the bugs on my copy, you kind of have to learn how to use it, workaround the bugs, SIDE's thread on moparisthebest's forums
perhaps if one day i get another USB drive, ill look into getting a portable JVM, or just the "offical" hotspot VM

you could use a batch file to set those path variables i guess, i heard of someone who did that in his univercity years

@ Ben

That's an idea… Every computer nowadays should already have JRE and JDK on them I guess…

Or, you could use netbeans plus a batch file (Like I use ;))
@echo off
start /b .\netbeans-5.5\bin\netbeans.exe --jdkhome jdk1.6.0_01 -J-server --userdir .\netbeans-5.5\usr -J-Xverify:none
But neither of those options makes a portable Java, just a portable IDE. For instance, if that system did not have a jvm installed, you still couldn't run runescape.

I'll be fine with a portable IDE ^_^

I guess I could use your idea about taking the Java installer with me, though…

Oh, but doesn't Firefox have Java support in itself? Thought I read that somewhere…

It has a java plugin, yes, but its saved somewhere not in its local directory.

Firefox on a flash drive ftw :D (Actualy, I think I might try that :garfield:)
