Scar + Smart overusing CPU

Well even before Smart my desktop couldn't run SCAR well. Its using like 90-98 cpu% while it runs SCAR. Even then freezing and not working at all. I even recently (like 2 days ago) reinstalled XP pro to see if it was that to no avail. Anyone know what could be causing this?

Current desktop computer specs:
AMD Athlon 64 2800+
1.80 GHz, 1.00GB of RAM
Video cards:
1. NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS 512mb
2. NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000
3. Radeon 7200

Yes I have 3 video cards, but nothing has lagged my computer like SCAR has. I can run all the high end games and then some. Even with multiple monitors on.

Please remember this is a FRESH install with all the updates for all my drivers. I even turned off my anti-virus/firewall program to see if that was it.

I have the same problem when running two, my system is:

Pentium (R) D CPU 2.80 GHz,
2 GB RAM

videocards:
RADEON X600 256MB HyperMomory (two of these)

it eats up my CPU usage,
and when running one its like at 40-60% CPU usage :'(

It doesn't even matter if I use smart or not, I thought Smart would take less cpu usage…

Idk, I'll try troubleshooting eventually. *sigh* Hopefully to solve both our problems.

SCAR used to lag my computer a little, but now its fine. Weird

And my computer specs are

Centrino duo 1.8 ghz

1 gig of ram

Laptop video card(its 128 or 256 I'm not exactly sure but its a laptop so its not great)

And I'm running vista

Whhaaa?! Since when can you run 3 video cards, from different manufacturers?!

no lag for me :) not on any of my comps or laptops…. (3 comps 2 LT)

XP uses its own configuration so its universal far as I know. Been using 3 video cards for 2 years now. And if I wanted I could hook up a 4th to my main card (the 7600) and configure it with NVIDIA. Once its configured I can rearrange it from XPs config.

Well, I'm running a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz w/ 512MB RAM and a… *embarrassment* NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 w/ 64MB, and I can easily run a SCAR + SMART with no lag. I can run two SCARs and two SMARTs with some difficulty, too.

For CPU usage
SCAR (before SMART), 0%
SCAR w/ SMART = ~60%-70%
2 SCARs w/ 2 SMARTs = ~80-100%

Exactly, why can't I use even one Scar+Smart? It lags my computer so horrible its not worth doing. Idk what it could be still. *sigh*

oh i see, your computer lags even w/o SMART, mine does not…

does your computer lagg with just runescape open?

does your computer lagg when running this in SCAR w/o runescape:

program New;
begin

repeat
wait(50);
until(false)

end.

if it laggs with just runescape…maby its the Java?
and if it just laggs with SCAR, im not sure

Hmm, are you using unsigned or signed? (The second boolean in Smartsetup False= unsigned, True = signed)

I have almost the same exact machine as you on my LAN and it can't run the unsigned version of smart.

I get the same thing. Signed, low detial.

Hugolord

2007-12-01 14:49:57

unsigned i can run 2 Smarts on my pc, signed i can run like 4 so yer switch to signed

Trev

weird, i never knew that signed/unsigned made a diffrence. I will have to test it on my computer!

[offtopic]hugolord,
how much ram does your computer have / Ghz?[/offtopic]

No running just Runescape with the smart program only uses like 40% of cpu. But as soon as I star the script it just destroys the cpu. So its running the script itself that kills it.

When I run this
program New;
begin

repeat
wait(50);
until(false)

end.
it takes 0% of cpu process…

Still not sure what it could be. Other then SCAR is taking way to much resources. I'm using 3.13 but even 3.12c did this exact thing.

Edit:
And yeah I run 4 smarts on my duo core laptop. 2gb of ram ftw!

Just a random fact: unsigned uses up more download than Signed :D

I know i have the latest java, but idk if its JDK or JRE.

Sounds like theres something funky going on with smart itself… try a reinstall or check its all good… havent used it myself, but if you didnt have the problem with normal scar then i guess its coming from there…

You know, processors have a rated clock speed for a reason… Scar being an interpreter and running color processing scripts is bound to take up a lot of cpu, couple that with SMART and your 1.8 ghz machine just won't cut it ;) Video card/ram makes no difference as long as you meet the recommended specs for whatever os you are using. Its the processor speed that makes a difference. 1.8 ghz means it can preform at about 18,000,000,000 clock cycles per second. Simply put, the reason scar/smart lags is because your processor is not fast enough to do all that its being asked to do.

If thats the case then why can I run SCAR + FireFox on my 533mhz machine? Its laggy but nothing like what happens on my AMD desktop. Even when I run SCAR + FireFox on my AMD it lags when it preforms the color searches and text reading. When it reads text it actually stops the computer for a brief second. Yet on my 533mhz it doesn't stop the machine just slows down a bit then continues.

Also how can I run 4 Scar+smarts on my laptop then, it only has a 2.0ghz processor? Granted its a duo core, but then it should be only 2 SCAR+Smarts…

I still don't understand how it could lag my 1.8ghz THAT much. I've redone the whole system so it has to be hardware at this point, which makes no sense to me.

Its more tied to the design of your processor then the GHZ. This is escially true for things like SMART/SCAR which are largly just, mem load, int arithmetic, or lower costing operations like bitshifts. Thus the processor design, pipline lenght, etc, is much more important then clocks per second.

Yeah I considered this greatly. I really need a new desktop setup anyways. >.>

Still it baffles me on how a 533mhz can still run it better then my 1.8ghz…

Yeah, it is tied to how the processor is designed. For instance, here are my computer specs(they are crap).

Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 GHz
512MB of RAM.

Even with that and Runescape loaded, somehow I can run three smarts with only around 75-80%.

LMAO! thats my specs too!

though i only have 504MB or RAM and for some reason i cant run more than one SMART or else i wont be able to do anything with my comp.

amd athlon 3200+ 2GHz

I have a 2.66 processor, and can run 2 scars+smarts, with some difficulty. I can run 1 smart and World of Warcraft easily. The CPU usage on the 2 scars+smarts is around 90-95%

If anything, SMART + SCAR should save on the CPU end.

You clearly can't with that processor and amount of ram.

I have dual core 3ghz, 4gig ram, and a geforce 8800, and smart takes up 10% of the cpu. I'm not sure what could be the problem. Lack of ram ?
