SRL Member Apps strictness

HyperSecret said something pretty good in the SMART thread.

Should the SRL Member Apps judging be now more strict?

I personally think yes they should.

IMO it should not be only "okay, this guys scripting skills are just enough", instead, more like that he is active on the forums, making good posts and like everyone knows him, not some guy who stepped from the shadows, and the scripting skills should be more than enough.

I just think that Ben's thing is worth more than ability to use RadialRoadWalk and FindSymbol.

i heavily agree, S.M.A.R.T. pretty much revolutionizes the way people can run scar, no more need for vms, i think this should be enforced

I think its hard enough already… But as always those who can script they're allowed in. Those who cant… Wait a month studying and apply again.

i personally dont think it is hard enough, yes some people apply with good scripts, but while others have so-so but they still get in, i think they must be known to a majority of the srl members, post good feedback, and also know how to script very well, or in some cases 'have paid their dues' such as jason2gs, and legendary, they both have been a part of the community for long periods and know their stuff

if only like 5 people vote and its 2 no's 3 yes's will they get in?? if thats what happens then a minimum vote #

and yea, there are people i dont think shouldve gotten in, so i think we should grade harder, or possibly even leave grading up to devs+(though i guess they have enough to do)

I fully agree they should be voted in a more strict way

there has to be a certain amount of "trust" when judging new member apps now…if there is a guy that is only learning how to script just to get gp in runescape and doesnt care about the community, he will rape runescape and leak…

I dont think that the scripting skills need to be judged any harder, however there needs to be more background checks along with studying the posts and contributions the applicant has made to the community.

It should be more strict. Accepting people that have just got to the board and have this amazing talent for SCAR/SRL scripting isnt a good idea.

Attitude / Behavior of applications need to be watched also. We don't need anyone shouting their mouth off or leaking out scripts. (Born2Code aka Travis?)

Lol, I kinda "stepped in from the shadows". I got into SRL Members with 1 bar in longevity. But I had known SCAR for months before, though. But yes, now it seems like we will be forced to vote more strictly. If an applicant is good enough to be worthy of SMART, they won't have problems getting in.

or make a new title like Advanced SRL Member which would be only access to S.M.A.R.T :P

That will not happen. The system is strict enough as it is. People are sparcely getting through. In my opinion, it is the other way around. Some SRL-Members should evaluate their judging capabilities, and let not only strict indenting or "good code" be the norm, but also place themselves in the position of the poor lonely applicant struggling to get in. You have outvoted many talented I would have let in, but I abide the rules of democracy. We are a very organised bunch, with high standards and maintain a reasonable level of communication. Your status should be used to stimulate and not to impose even stricter rules. Strict rules are the result of poor judgement.

I knew it would not be long before threads like this started being created. Look what a greedy bunch we've become now…

Something great happens, and you can't bother to share it?

nope because some members are worried about the future of SMART.

OR if you want to look at it from a negative point of view then yeah they are greedy and hate outsiders. :p

Will restricting and limiting SMART cause it to last longer? See it this way: If a rules there, it gives you more of a reason to break it.

I'm glad we agree most of the people here are xenophobes.

i wouldnt go as far as calling them xenophobes.

the majority of the SRL members here are just worried about SMART getting leaked/ abused/ raped/etc.

there is no absolute solution to contain these things from happening so why not just make it available to all SRL members instead.

R0b0t1

2007-11-19 17:17:54

Thats what I'm talking about. But it will still be leaked from members, and most likely has already been.

But they are xenophobes. Seen the apps lately? I remember seeing "No. No. No. No." on ones that looked perfectly good to me.

I dont think this is about greed. People are really concerned about this, and I do share this concern. But authorisation is not the answer. The answer lies in the believe that people will keep this to themselves or share it with their close relations, and not use it to abuse runescape. SCAR has never been a real problem for Jagex, and this development will not change this situation. All we do really is giving back control over your computer while autoing. On my system I have never managed to satisfactory run two S.M.A.R.T.'s simultaneously… All I can do now is watch the script while I am working, which is utterly cool.

I think we're doing pretty good with apps. IMO, there was a pretty bad spell back there, we let in like two or three who really didn't deserve it.

Why inconvenience those who could be learning and contributing only to slow the inevitable?

EDIT: utterly cool :)

When I mentioned the "greed" I meant more like "hoarding". Although some are concerned about this, sometimes it might not be for the right reasons.

I dont think the judging should get harder just because some new component has been released. People who have worked hard enough to make a script a couple days ago could have gotten in where as someone today would be graded harder. That doesn't seem fair in my mind i don't know about you.

Sp0rky

2007-11-19 20:26:56

Imo, it should stay the same. The community is based on trust and respect for one another, if the trust fails (of existing members or new members) then it's a huge blow to the community in general.

Members that are accepted normally are good scripters and know what they are talking about. I do see a problem with the people voting, though. When I (once a month or so) look through the applications I take quotes from the script and say, "Hey, here's what you did wrong and here is a better way". I don't rewrite the script for them, nor do I say "Your script isn't very good, I voted no". If you are quoting someone in your post besides the applicant or you have no quotes from the script itself then you are not making a worthwhile post, IMO.

Here's my two bits (though really, I've JUST started looking into the member sections):

1.The voting system is run by the members.
2.Though the admins advocate and incorporate a system much like Democracy (a bad two choices, but what the hell), the truth is that the voting system looks much like Communism with hierarchy involved.

Now we have people saying to make the rules tighter, tighter, ever tighter. Jagex upping their members fees would be a bad analogy of that, but a comparison nevertheless. You say it's too weed out the bad people. But who's a "bad" person? You or I could've been, it just turns out we're not (hopefully). And who let you in? Who tried to keep you out? The memory is a strong thing, grudges are held (we wouldn't like to believe so, but there's truth and there's fantasy.) Just because you're a good scripter (SRL member) doesn't mean that you are a good judge of people. <- The previous few things are a random compilation of thoughts to settle in your heads.

As a final thought, I'd like to add that our jobs should not be to make entrance hard, but (this is going to be extreme) all the FFA scripts should be removed. Only one, ONE script should stay for anybody to see. Why? Because hell, if you're willing to learn enough and stay around enough to put up a good app after seeing practically nothing, I'd say yes.

But I don't vote.

I dont think we should suddenly change how strict we are. It wouldn't be fair. There are many SRL Members that barely made it in. Is it fair to the newer users that it is suddenly much harder to become an SRL Member? SMART is members only so that it is not abused. If someone takes the time to learn to script and make a script that is good enough; they are not a leecher.

Wow crap… I didn't mean to cause a thing like this lol.

Plus that lol I didn't mean this because of a new component fully lol…

After I say the following, I will propably get flamed the living shit out of me, thought evil and bad, but, in my opinion, IN or OUT.
No

"Well its so-so, hes okay… He propably knows what he does… Yea fix the ten nextplayers in the middle loops and don't load 500 hundred bitmaps in a loop without freeing them… Also plz get off my mother… Also you should remove that clickmouse to static pos with no waits in a false loop…"

:p

Meh, anyways, this can be closed so I get out alive :p

well =S yes the member apps should become more strict since SMART WAS RELEASEd (smart could be sold too like other bots) <<< and SRL is nice enough to give for free too SRL MEMBERS

Well as far as strictness in voting goes I personally judge my scripts like this…

I look at my application (If I had one) and I look at my latest script. I make a rough estimate of what my scripting abilities where in between those two and judge that as being an acceptable member. Yes over time using this method will make it harder for people to get in, but the way I see it, If I learn a new technique and put it out there it makes more to learn for newer people. Thats why as long as they stay up to date with scripting they should at least have the knowledge I had near the middle of my career.

Thats just my opinion, I don't know about being stricter but I think if everyone followed that kind of a rule of thumb it would stay pretty accurate as far as who gets in.

EDIT: I did some number crunching and here's what I got for stats, in case you think too many people are SRL Members. (These Numbers are based on the Ticker at the Top of the SRL Website and from the "Staff" Page).

Members: 37,709
Active Members: 4,643

Administrators: 9
Moderators: 9
Developers: 43
SRL Helpers: 59
SRL Masters: 20
SRL Scripters: 89
SRL Members: 387

*Total Percentages are based on the "Total" Number of Members, Active Percentages are based on the "Active" Number of Members*

Total - Administrators: 0.023%
Active - Administrators: 0.193%

Total - Moderators: 0.023%
Active - Moderators: 0.193%

Total - Developers: 0.114%
Active - Developers: 0.926%

Total - Helpers: 0.156%
Active - Helpers: 1.270%

Total - Masters: 0.053%
Active - Masters: 0.430%

Total - Scripters: 0.236%
Active - Scripters: 1.916%

lol

yeah but no one will know how to use it :D

smart can be distributed as much as SCAR and SRL is but without tuts and directions, ordinary people wont know how to use it.

2007-11-28 20:30:44

Special Ed's stats are useful. Shows how many people are actually in. 1% isn't all that much. If 387 people started raping SMART, how much would RS economy drop? Not much. Anyways, many aren't active, and most wouldn't. Though, if SMART became nonmembers also, that would be different.

Special Ed

2007-11-28 21:20:26

Well TotalMembers - SRL Members:= (37709 - 387) = 37322.
Even ActiveMembers - SRL Members:= (4643 - 387) = 4256.

37,322 More people using SMART will make a difference but 4,256 will still make a huge difference but it may not be as drastic.

Also I only think it would increase auto-ing hours not really how many people auto because most people would only run 1 SMART like they run 1 RS Client now. Its really a trade-off but like I said above be SMART-er (Wow I'm funny…) about applications, not necissarily stricter.

Here

2007-11-28 21:49:17

SMART-er? (Am I supposed to groan?)

Yes, judgment rather than strictness. Laws are brainless, judgment is human.
