- What Is Ventrilo?
Ventrilo is a VOIP (Voice over IP) program that allows you to chat with multiple people (or just one person) at a time over the internet. You can have multiple "Rooms" for people to chat in to better organize groups and meetings as well as have discussions one on one with people. Ventrilo also has a chat so if you don't have a microphone or are too shy to talk you can always type like in any normal MSN, AIM, ICQ Chatroom.
- Where do I get it, and why should I?
You can download Ventrilo 3.0.0 from here.
As for why you should get it, I think that being able to communicate verbally is an easier and more efficient way of communicate ideas, because…
- It Takes Less Effort than Typing.
- Even more Instant than IM'ing.
- Easier to Communicate Ideas.
- Definitely brightens your day.
- Makes old people think your crazy!
I mean what more do you need?!
- How do I setup Ventrilo?
This is quite easy, I've even made it easier with pictures because I know some of you can read very well… even though your apart of a text based community… online… *sigh*
Step 1. Installation (Very Simple)
After you've downloaded Ventrilo from here double click the Icon and wait for the setup to start.
After the Install Window appears click "Next" and you be confronted with the license agreement, check the "I accept the license agreement" circle and click "Next".
Now, type in your full name (real or fake, doesn't matter) and an organization (if you want, its not needed). After you've got that information typed in select either the "Anyone who uses this computer" Circle or the "Only for me" Circle, I'd suggest just installing it "Only for me", then Click "Next".
Now you can choose where you'd like to install Ventrilo to on your hard drive, I suggest just leaving it as is, but if you need to change the location or want to you can. After you choose the install location click "Next".
This next slide is completely useless, click "Next".
Wait for the program to install and then you be confronted with a "Ventrilo Client has successfully been installed." Window. Click finish and proceed to Step 2.
Step 2. User Setup (Very Simple)
First double click on the Ventrilo Icon on your desktop.
A window will open up that should look exactly like this…

First Click on the "->" next to username.

A new window will open that says "Setup User" at the top. Click "New", type in your name (SRL Name Preferred) and click "Ok". Below your username there will be 3 textboxs.
- Phonetic - What your name sounds like when you say it. Please retype your username here without any numbers or symbols. For Example, Hy71194 should either type "Hy" or what he'd like to be called maybe "Harry".
- Description - I haven't ever used it but I believe its just a Description of who you are.
- Work Dir - I haven't ever use it but I believe recorded conversations go here.
Now for Step 3.
Step 3. Server Setup (Must Read)
Click "Ok" and click on the arrow next to "Server" directly below the one for "Username" and a New window titled "Connection Editor" will appear.
Click "New" at the top and a new window will appear, type in the name you want for the server here, In this case you could type "SRL - Forums".
For the text fields shown in this picture fill them is as I have them.
- Hostname or IP: ventrilo-4.clanplanet.co.uk
- Port number: 3891
- Password:
- Default Channel:

You will only need a password if someone specifically tells you that you do, and the only reason that would happen is if someone made you an administrator or gave you special permissions.
After you have all the information typed in correctly click "Ok".
Now you should see MSG: Server is available. Press connect. In the blank box below Bindings and to the left of the buttons on the side.

If you just see MSG: Contacting server. you may have either entered the information wrong or the server is off line.
If you have the Ok to connect press "Connect" on the side, and you should hear some funky tune and see something like…

This! There are various things you can do within setup to customize your experience but I'll start an FAQ below to answer some questions. I hope to see you on Ventrilo!

———————————- FAQ ———————————-
Q: This person is really quiet/loud how can I make them louder?
A: If your using Direct Sound right click on a persons name, click Miscellaneous then click on Special Effects. When you do that a new window will open, click on Volume in the Right column then click Add, Volume should now be in the Left column. Click on Volume in the left column and click Properties below, and then change they're volume percentage accordingly.

Q: I [don't]want to press a key to talk, how can I do this?
A: First you go into Setup on the right side of the ventrilo window.
*Note: When in setup you can hear people but they can't hear you, to test your volume or Push-to-Talk Hotkey click on Test at the bottom left hand of the window.*
If you want to use a key to talk (You hold down a key while your talking *Which I prefer*) you check the box at the Top Left that Says Use Push-to-Talk Hotkey then go down and on the left side towards the middle there will be a Blank Field that says Hotkey ,click on the field then press the key you want to use to talk and its done! Click OK and your ready to go. If you want to use Sensitivity i.e (Don't want to use a key to talk) then after you go into Setup make sure Use Push-to-Talk Hotkey is unchecked, then below where it says Hotkey there should be a box that says Sensitivity (If the box is grayed out that means that you are still using a Hotkey to Talk). Where it says says Sensitivity you put in a number 1 - 100 of how sensitive you want your microphone to be to activate. 0 being extremely sensitive to 100 being screaming at your microphone. I have mine set at around 13 when I'm using it. You just need to play with it for a while so that its on when you talk but not always on. After you've changed your settings then click OK and there you go, you can talk to who-ever how-ever you want.
