Hey guys, I've been talking with RAM a bit about starting up the community mentoring project again and would like to know what you guys thought about what I had so far. Please feel free to leave comments, questions, suggestions, or even applications to become a mentor if you're interested.

The SRL Community Mentoring Project

Overview:

The SRL Community Mentoring Project is designed to help newer or less experienced members gain a greater understanding of SCAR, SRL, and the use of both to better understand the fundamentals of autoing and creating a script. Each mentee, through help and guidance from a mentor, will learn the skills desired to become a better scripter with the potential to become an SRL Member. This program is not designed to be a free trip to becoming an SRL Member, however. As a mentee, one will have to step up and take charge in his or her own learning with the mentor there to assist with problems and any questions that may arise.

Mentors and Mentees:

Mentees:

Requirements to become a mentee:
  • You must have the rank of SRL Junior Member or above. This is required so we can be sure that you are actually serious about learning SCAR scripting and want to contribute to the community.
  • You must be willing to accept constructive criticism and the opinions of your mentor. Mentors are there to help you become a better scripter and keeping a closed mind will only inhibit you.

Advanced Mentees:
An Advanced Mentee will be mentored by someone who is a very advanced scripter and is willing to lend his or her time to further progress the knowledge of the Mentee. Advanced Mentees are required to be SRL Members and will learn techniques for scripting beyond what is required for becoming an SRL Member.

Submitting an application:
  • Your SRL username
  • What you're interested in creating or working with so the mentors can get an idea of what and how to teach you
  • A brief explanation of any prior knowledge of SCAR scripting (if applicable) as well as any other scripting or programming languages you think are relevant for your mentor to know
  • Any methods of communication you're willing to use (PMs, E-mail, AIM, MSN, etc.)
  • The timezone in which you live (for communication purposes)
  • Advanced Mentee (if SRL Member, please indicate if you'd like an advanced mentor)

Mentors:

In order to become a mentor, you must be have been an SRL Member for 30 or more days or be a higher ranked member. Although there might be some Junior Members who feel as though they are ready, this rule is in place because SRL Members know what is required to apply for and become an SRL Member. Keep in mind that this position is completely voluntary and at no time are you required to have a mentee if you are too busy or have personal issues.

Advanced Mentors:
Advanced Mentors will be primarily developers or long-time SRL Members who have a very good understanding of SCAR and SRL. They will be allowed to tutor SRL Members on the more intricate functions and methods in order for our Members to better learn how to perform some of the more difficult tasks in SCAR.

If you're interested in becoming a mentor, please PM me with the information listed below each current mentors' name and I'll be happy to add you to the list. You will then be able to select and begin teaching mentees.

Are you sure we have enough SRL Members with enough time to do this?

No, but that's why I posted it here so I could get some feedback and see who was actually interested.

Even if there are only enough SRL Members able to this that a small percent of juniors learn enough to become mentors themselves, it's worth it, because then it will increase exponentially.

I really hate teaching noobs that dont know nothing, but it would be alright helping people who know how to atleast make a procedure or something.

I wonder how Santa_clause could cope helping so much back in the old days ;)

Yeah, and I'd like to know what functions there are (bob drop your keyboard!) and what the diff params mean/ what they are for, and what the functions do.

'CannyCore' doesn't say much…

Anyway back on topic..

Thanks for the comments and support, guys. I really think this idea could work, but we need the support of you guys to make it.

After reading some of your comments, I found that a lot of you mentioned some specific things you wanted to learn / teach. I think that's a great way to place the mentees with someone who really knows what he or she is talking about (i.e. KoK with DTMs and n3ss3s with finding objects :p). I've added a section "Proficient in" to the mentor format for you guys to list what you want to teach.

kind of interested.

Wouldn't mind having somebody specific to ask about SRL.

In return I could advise them in all sorts of things (regarding computing and IT).
C, pointers, System Design, Database Design, UML - just about anything that is not C++, or Delphi.

Honestly, not interested(in this idea/project). I help quite a few new members on MSN whenever i can. I don't think a collective group of mentors is going to work or have any point.

Plus, theres pretty much no way you could govern who mentors and who doesn't.

@N3ss3s: Ahhh, lol, can you not figure it out? Just apply some effort.

I will probably mentor someone but I am at school right now and I don't feel like filling out an application

I want to be a mentee, can someone teach me more about TPA's , efficient object finding and SCAR cavaces?

Oh, btw, shouldn't it be a must that the mentees actually know the basics.. I mean, it can be really frustrated if someone is really acting nooby o.0

I ever had someone (from over fagex.net:)) doing something like this:
treecolor=12434543;
begin
declareplayers;
repeat
chop
until ivfull
dropp;
end.

And that dude believed it should work..:p

What do you mean? I've got a .dll and the code inside it for a pure SCAR/SRL programmer is the same as somebody requesting returning a TPA from baby's ass(baby was in the math homework im doing..)

What about mentoring for SRL Members?

The scripters in this community range from the extremely advanced to the absolute beginner, mentoring for the beginners is great and everything… but what about those who are of an average member status? Don't they want to become advanced scripters?

Just becoming an SRL Member doesn't mean you've learn everything yet, on the contrary, you are just getting started.

My point being is there is more to be learned than the requirements of SRL Membership, I would like to see more Members become Advanced scripters and mentoring from already Advanced scripters is also important.

From what I see, if you say 2 people are SRL Members, sure cool… they can script… but in reality there are tremendous differences from the best SRL member to the worst.

Why won't this have a point? Helping a few random people fix their HowManyPlayers errors on MSN (that's a dramatization, of course) is definitely less effective than organizing a group of people willing to help developing (or even more advanced) scripters become better.

I don't really understand your second statement because this program, if initiated, will be completely voluntary and will not force anyone to become a mentor or mentee if they don't wish to do so.

Nowhere in my post did I mention the mentees were required to only be a Junior Member. If SRL Members feel like becoming a mentee as well, that's fine with me if there's someone to teach them. The whole point of this project is to get people who are more advanced to help out the newer or less knowledgeable scripters to make this community even better than it already is.

Then you should add information for higher level mentoring.

Information detailing what exactly? That it's O.K. for SRL Members to be mentored too? There's nothing in the post that states otherwise, so I'm not really sure what you want me to add. If an SRL Member wants a mentor, they can just ask someone who's on the list that they feel can teach them well or ask someone for private help. As of now, I just don't see any reason how or why SRL Member mentoring would be mentioned up there as it's already fine.

I just got the impression that the purpose of this project was to teach new comers the skills needed to be members by mentoring. If you aren't against the idea of having higher level mentoring for members, then I don't see a problem with adding some details concerning advanced mentoring.

Teaching newcomers probably will be the primary purpose, but the option will always be there for SRL Members to be mentored as well. If adding some information will clear that up will help, what do you suggest adding to the post?

Something similar to that of what you already have; a small paragraph describing mentees for advanced mentoring and a small paragraph describing mentors for advanced mentoring.

Okay, I've added a little explanation on the front page about Advanced Mentees and Mentors, but we'd probably need some people to volunteer to be them before we get that going.

I've added pwnaz0r as well as IceFire908 to the list. I'd like to get around 5 more mentors just to make sure we have enough people for the moment. If you'd like to apply, please just PM me with the form (located in all three of the mentor listings) and I'll add you to the list. Don't worry about Current mentees as none of you have any from this project yet. Thanks! :)
