Later in the month, we bring you the 'Grand Exchange'. This new building will be located in the north-west of Varrock and will house a huge new addition to the game: the ability to offer items to buy and sell across ALL servers and to ALL players! You might, for example, go to the Exchange and put a full Barrows set up for sale, for example - then, playing Skullball in Canifis, you might get a message telling you that they have sold and that you can go to the nearest bank to receive payment! The Grand Exchange will allow you to spend more time on the things you enjoy, providing a less time-consuming alternative to selling your items on the Forums or amongst the crowds of Varrock Marketplace.
Insane!
Sell macro'ed goods anyone? ;)

Hmm, I wonder if the 'Grand Exchange' will charge you for their services, like maybe a certain percentage of the sales price…
It will probably be great, but there are ways they could manage to screw it up.

Yeah I know, but I mean now they'll realize the forums will be almost useless. This will be almost like giving every player access to the marketplace forums.
EDIT: Wonder what this is about…
We couldn't part from you without mentioning something very, very big on the horizon. The new year brings a stunning new update, and we are so happy with it that we are going to let a few hints trickle out over the next few weeks…
Everybody, post if you see any of these 'hints'.

Jagex is so freaking retarded. First it updates shops to keep autoers from taking things and making profit.
Then it adds a 'Grand Exchange' that WILL be abused by ME and any other smart autoer.
Those idiots should make up their feeble minds.

And it is about time too. This will have a serious impact on prices folks, unless they change their entire economy to the
Communistic model they recently implemented (I haven't heard anybody about that, BTW). If they do, this will most certainly mean that Jagex from that point on will determine the prices of all goods, including silly 1-coin P-Hats and rare drops from Slayer monsters, like wips. Otherwise, all goods will drop dramatically in prices. The economy will collapse.

I strongly* disagree with you Fakawi. Prices weren't high in runes because they were hard to make or find, it was because they used to sell high in shops, and Runecrafters are unusual. If anything, this just killed the economy, because Essence sells what, 30 ea? And Runes are about 10 ea? They just made Runecrafters even more rare, thus decreasing the growth of the economy.
Behold, the once famous World 16 is rotting.

Everything will need to have a fixed bottom price, otherwise all prices will drop dramatically. Imagine you have a Abyssal Whip, and you offer it for, say, 1.2 mil instead of the marketvalue 1.35/1.4 mil, because you need the money quick. Next anyone that needs money quick will be forced to offer his Whip below or equal to the price (1.2 mil) in stock. This can seriously crash the RS-Economy. Therefore there will a fixed bottom price, just like the system works in all shops with their unlimited supplies. Governement Controlled economy.

But if somebody offers an item for a lower price, all the people browsing the exchange would immediately buy it wouldn't they? So it would barely get noticed before it is sold. There would probably be a few thousand people constantly on the exchange, and like a thousand would be merchanters looking for good deals. Maybe 500 would be looking at items over 1m. And probably like 200 would notice that whip being sold for 200k less than it ought to be. And probably 50 would want to buy it. 50 people rushing at one item, I don't think the other 4 thousand would notice it. And nobody selling their whip would think about it.
Then again….yeah I guess you're right. The people that DO notice it will see how quick it gets sold. So they decide they'll just sell this immediately for 200k less instead of waiting a few hours. And people will see whips being sold for less and think that's the price…
Then again….The whole point of the exchange is so that you can do other things while selling something. So people wouldn't mind getting that 200k a little later, unless they're desperate. But if you're not desperate, then you won't mind going to do something else and getting that extra 200k…
Just my 2 cents :)

If they DON'T have a bottom price, the runescape economy will be more capitalistic (and capitalism works in RL, so why shouldn't it in RS?). And if you can sell at certain amounts, and not less or more, the prices will drop for single items, and increase once in bigger amounts, as less people will be offering that.
And…
This all is done inside a building, which only one of it exists. If I'm in Seers (i.e.), I can't do home telly, and I don't have any telerunes anymore. Then I won't be able to use the grand exchange, so I need to buy in bank.
The prices will increase inside the bank as less people will be offering the item.

JackLKrawl, no.
How hard do you think phats were to get? They weren't. They were easy to get as to make a drunk to drink. Also same with Santa hats, same with every old stuff, they are antique (spelt right?).
Paintins in real life (some of them) cost a lot because the paintz0r has died.
Same with phats etc, there wont be more of them.

What are you arguing?
When runes were sold to shops, items left, gold entered.
Now items will be consumed and not replaced with gold as often, so yeah - the Grand Exchange has hurt the economy.
EDIT:
Well, not so much the economy, but the growth* of the economy.

I'm not sure how this is going to work, maybe like ebay with a reserve price?
Those of you saying the economy is going to collapse need an economics lesson. Just because prices go down does not mean the economy is collapsing, it just means there is greater demand and a greater supply. Whats going to happen is the price is going to go down in the beginning but it will not be a downward spiral it will just reach a new equilibrium point and then 2 months later everyone will just be like "Damn, remember when dmeds were worth 2 mil?"

Ebay makes you pay them to host your products.
Assuming the Grand Exchange works the same way…
They have made it very clear where cheaper things can be found, relative to the shops. Therefor, you will find the cheapest items on the streets, and the more expensive, but still less than the shops, in the Grand Exchange. I don't think it's that hard to see that Jagex just set a maximum price and an average price.
But yeah, I didn't think of it that way.

w00t grand exchange, but for sure jagex will make it so it doesnt crash too much, i mean they made the game didnt they?
Haha@ nielsie. O im sure they will find a way.
And im fairly sure fawki is right. Not that it will collapse. But that prices will plummet. It will be a one stop shop for everything. And you are pretty much guranteed if you put your goods up there for a cheap price that it will be sold. So why would you bother going for a high price. High prices only really worked when either a. people are desperate or b. you are selling a tonne of them and people dont mind paying a bit more. But both these are negated now. First being that there are tonnes of them in the great exchange so no one will be desperate as you can go there and get one straight away. And secondly. Amounts dont matter anymore. It will only be slightly slower to buy 5 lots of 1k coal for 180 each as it is to buy 5k coal all at once for 200 each

I mainly think that things will stay the same overall. Sure, the first few days may be hectic - but it might even out later. Jagex might implement a system to keep f2p discouraged from selling there.
The thing I like best is being able to merchant without moving.
Atomic1221
2007-11-04 01:06:40
Maybe this is Jagex's way of tackling price inflation?
In my opinion, sell all your accumulated goods now to be on the safe side. Eventually, (prob. 1 -2 months), if all goods become cheaper, people will make less money and less money circulating=more expensive rsgp prices.

auto merchanters will need a total change now! and mine was nearly complete!! will there still be any merchanting? because if it is as fakawi says all items will be selling for the same price, who would buy 1k coal for 200k if they had coal for 150 right next to it?
Any script that collects and banks in varrock might want to sell it to the great exchange? :p

Merchanting will still exist but not in Varrock. A lot of people are too lazy to travel to a different city or need the goods right away. I am sure you will still be able to buy/sell coal in Falador next to the furnace because not everyone will want to walk to Varrock, buy the goods and then have to walk back to Falador. Also, merchanting in the sense of buying real low at the great exchange and then selling for more somewhere else. (Lobbies for real cheap at the great exchange, then selling near pk border or so for inflated price)

I think we should do something about this… There is a yew tree nearby and if someone made a bot that cut the yews and sold them to exchange for lowest offer. We could get yews down to a pretty cheap price…
