I'm 19, I turn 20 next month. I started programming HTML with CSS when I was about 11-12 because I looked at a few websites for the game Final Fantasy VII and wanted to create my own website. I fooled around with that for years eventually getting into the other client side languages like JavaScript until about 16 when I learned my first server side language, PHP. Then, I begin into C++ but only on the procedural side.
When I learned Java at around 17 I really began to understand OO concepts. I then decided at 18 I wanted to get hired as a Web Developer so I set out to really master touch typing(over 100 WPM), Emacs & Vi (extremely powerful editors) as well as PHP, SQL, XML, HTML, & JavaScript. With Vi or Emacs and touch typing you can program without ever lifting your hands off the keys or looking at your hands. Better than any IDE in my opinion.
About 100 WPM, thats pushing it for me though, I type comfortably at 70 WPM and even 40-50 WPM is fine as long as its accurate. It's the code that really matters. When I'm programming I spend more time thinking how I want to do things so I do them right the first time. I just think its neat and also important to be able to use something like Vi and forget your even pushing keys and let things flow easier.
To get hired you must really know these technologies very well. I don't use an IDE so I've memorized every useful PHP function and experiemented with all of them, which I need to reference the obscure ones. Then if you look at something like the acronym XML it expands XSL, XSLT, XSL-FO, XPath, XQuery, XLink, XPointer, DTD, Schema, XML DOM, XForms, SOAP, WSDL, RDF, RSS, WAP, and Web Services. So knowing XML and knowing XML can be two different things to two different people.
Anyway, I am only 19 now and I make over 60k! I think I'll be making a few SCAR scripts since I find it fascinating.

Thanks for some information on yourself. I always think it is strange when adults decide to post on a forum like SRL-Forums. I don't really understand the touch-typing thing though – is it like a different keyboard layout? Because if you've ever read about it, the qwerty keyboard was made to slow typists down, so I'm guessing its partly that. I remember seeing a keyboard with only about 10 keys on it, and you had to press down almost 5 at a time.

Touch typing doesn't involve any special keyboard its just a method invented in the early 1900s by a writer using the typewriter which is the fastest and most effective _practical_ typing method invented to date. I recommend downloading a program like Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing off www.isohunt.com to learn and practice it. Just type the program in the Search box and download one with the most Seeds and most current version. Get uTorrent if you don't have a program that can process .torrent files. In the top right hand of uTorrent there are search engines for Torrent databases also. You can get practically any software there.

I first started HTML from when I was about 8. But there was nothing I could really try it on (because you had to fake your age over 13 to create a forum :p(I "abode" by the rules back then :p)), so eventually I just faked it, and I was really good at it. I learnt HTML firstly from the Neopets HTML Guide (lol I know… :p).
I then went onto Visual Basic, and, I had a lot of help from my cousins (they are about 18 now(I'm 14 :p)) and I was able to create some really simple things…(my best thing being a client :p).
I then went onto SCAR and was one of the population pwning Jagex. :p

I could, but the type of forum I wanted to created (a free hosting one) was
www.proboards.com. You have to be over 13 to register with one of those, and back then, I abided by the rules, so I couldn't create one because I wasn't allowed because I wasn't of age yet then.

I don't use Flash. I think it should only be used for animation. If you want to stimulate the interactivity of Flash a Web Developer in the Web 2 era should use HTML, XML, PHP, and JavaScript. XML's XMLHttpRequest object will allow you to call any Server script and receive its output which you can pour into any HTML object using JavaScript/HTML DOM. This allows you to do absolutely anything without reloading the client's browser. Its the future of the web.
I'd say you'll find a huge amount of people, companies, and recruiting agencies looking for developers on Monster or Craigslist and all you have to do to get a job without a degree is finish a project demonstrating your capabilities, maybe even serveral. Let's just say hands down if you were the author of phpBB or some peice of excellent OpenSource technology you would be getting hired for a good paycheck.

Can you recommend some books on getting started learning these things?
I would recommend
http://www.w3schools.com/ If you learn and experiment with the HTML, XHTML, CSS, XML, JavaScript, HTML DOM, DHTML, PHP, & SQL sections you will get a good framework. You must also approach learning these things with patience and a love of understand them. It shouldn't be work but play. I don't recommend ASP.NET or Microsoft technologies because they are not cross-platform for the most part. Then you will want to install Apache server, with PHP and MySQL, you can use the documentation on each of their websites and download the products free to constuct your own server to test and build your applications locally. Its also good to understand them because you will be working with them.
Basically all of those technologies I mentioned are client side, except PHP and your SQL database, which are server side. All of your client side technologies are molded into the Browser(Mozilla Firefox), and the server side are molded into the Server(Apache). The client side technologies operate on the clients computer, the server side technologies operate on the server.
Also, you can download all of your books for free off websites like
http://www.isohunt.com/, they are usually refered as eBooks. To select your books you can visit sites like Amazon and search "PHP" in the books section and sort by most popular. The best part is all of the technologies and all of the material is absolutely free! It just takes the dedication of time. In my experience the books are only good for theory, or for something you are having a very difficult time learning, as the books go far more into detail. There are references for all of the abilities of these technologies for free, if not by the author of the technology then a site like w3schools.com. Google will be your good friend in your career also. If you encounter an error in the script post it in Google, etc.
PHP is not the most powerful language for the Web Developer though, but it is the best language for OpenSource and collaborative software. You will see thats why Wikipedia uses it and so does phpBB, etc. Because of its nature companies select it if Java is overkill, since PHP is cheaper. PHPs rival is ASP.NET, which only runs on Microsoft servers and is more powerful for using that platform exclusively, PHP runs on any platform though, so thats its strength. For enterprise applications in web development you will see them using Java on the server side, like eBay, since its closed source and only the developers must understand the code. Java is cross-platform and offers the most power of all server side languages.
PHP and ASP jobs will be 45-80k, Java developers can make over 100k. The real jackpot is starting your own dot com like YouTube, Craigslist, Wikipedia, MySpace, Digg, etc. where the potential is millions or billions. Many of these are built by self taught programmers in their garages, all it takes is a great
idea and the ability to
create it. Many of the greatest intellectuals and ideas are created by self taught people.

To hack you must understand web development and programming extremely well though, as to break into a server over a network such as the internet you have to understand the languages and technologies the network uses, then you find and exploit its security flaws. Most servers communicate using technologies like Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc. As for understanding the operating system the server uses you will need to know C++, etc. As for the network itself, protocols like TCP/IP. :)

Yes, your right. Almost all languages use the same basic syntax, Thank Goodness, but technologies like PHP, C++, and Java also have huge libraries of functions || classes that must all be experimented, memorized, and understood to truly make them useful, or get hired. On the theory side, you need to understand things like OO, Data Structures, etc.

I'm fifteen, started learning HTML/CSS when I was about… Eleven or so. My sister turned me on to Neopets, and I wanted to learn how to make my user page look cooler :)
Neopets got boring, and my friend Hunter got me started on ScuneRape. I played that for about three years, then found this site. That started me on SCAR/Pascal, and I stuck with that for a while. I then learned that SCAR uses Pascal, and tried my hand at Delphi. I had it downloaded for a while, didn't really have any idea how to use it, and got rid of it. Downloaded it again a while ago, and I think I'm fairly good at it now.
Started on Java with the help of Sean Greasley's Java tutorials, and a couple months ago, got membership at vtc.com for the Java tutorials. You don't even know. Not to generalize but most of the population here is just like omg scriptz lemme get so i can make moneyz. With the new installment of the SRL junior member rank there has been an outbreak of spam. Thankfully the admins have been doing a great job at keeping this system working. But most people (not all) are here to get what they want, and they don't care at all for other people. They finish the scripts so it looks like they did something, not that some of them have good intentions with it and are really trying to learn, but some others aren't.
As for my story, i started programming in ti-basic at around 10. After that i decided i should learn vb which i did. Then that went ok until it died down after a while around age 12. The next year i started playing runescape. I got addicted to it and played all the way until last year ish. I got many scripts from numerous sites and found that i couldn't really get any to do what i needed. That's when i decided i should learn Scar. As of now i know scar, delphi,vb,html, and java ( somewhat).

I know, I know. This has been a great issue over the last year. We are getting somewhere now though. SVN will surely help in that, for sure. Standarisation and maturity has brought peace to the programming communication, as it should be, a positive environment with open minds aiming for a common goal.
I too am impressed to by the seemingly infinite amount of talent rolling in each day. I have been surpassed in programmingtalents by many kids (even by my own son). SRL offers a platform for programming talents of all ages. I am glad our philosophy has caught on so many people around the Globe.
One of these days I will repost RSRL v0.1 , compiled by me from SSI2, RSCI, SI and Squig, the leading includes those days. V0.1 is a real good laugh, I can tell you that. Before that, all scripts where tagged with [SSI2], [SI] or [Squig], but where not at all compatible with each other. This didnt matter so much as long you had the proper includes, but it was a mess. Moreover, for some reason there was always somewhere a fight between include-writers/followers. SRL took over, and many people jumped aboard and worked making it was it is today.
I almost instamembered you
apolloiiix, but 17 posts…:). Thanks for your contributions to these forums so far.

Before SRL, The includes were crazy. They were all formatted differently, and it was quite annoying if you wanted to download 20 other includes in order to run one script. When I was still at Sythe and RuneCMS, I never used includes, I just made everything from scratch . Of course, this wasn't a good idea, as it would mean no random support, it would take 20x longer to make a working script, etc. The script I made here was previously going to be a ScarScape script, but since it had closed before, I decided to stop SCAR scripting for a while.
By the way, well done apolloiix.
Anyways, on to my coding history…
I started coding with DOS batch files when I was 7. I would say that was a good move for me, as it was simple, but it showed me basically what programming is. I tried out HTML a year later, and made some nice websites (I even had tables down pat by 9). At 8, my friend showed me runescape. I had no idea what to do with it at this time, as i kept getting lost in lumbridge :p. By the end of my ninth year, my dad showed me that you can do server-side programming with HTML as well. So then, I tried out PHP and liked it a lot. I ended up trying to make forum software with it (
www.nxtitle.net/Other/EvoBBS-0_0_8) but it never turned out that well.At that time, I found Python, which is an interpreted programming language built from C++. I never really did anything with it though. Then I heard of RuneCMS. I tried Sythe's powerminer and it was crap, I can't believe he wanted money for it! Then RuneCMS shut down and turned into sythe.org. There was where I found SCAR. I started actually scripting and not leeching :p when I was about 12. I started learning C++ and how it works when I was about 14, and I still use it all the time up to this day. I found SRL forums when I had just turned 15, and I think this place is amazing. And here we are today.
Since I've been here, I haven't even used many other people's scripts. All I've used here is Wizzup's essence miner. I also ported a very popular script to SRL4, but the creator didn't want me releasing it. And, of course, my really crappy script that I haven't worked on in probably a month. Hurray.
Yeah, that's about it. I never went into any microsoft programming languages.

Yep, thanks to Neopets back in the day, I learned the basics of HTML in around 10-11 years old, and then went deeper into it at about 12. (Note: I am not 12, I have grown a bit. ;))
