News of JAD and from Buckley.

Well, I was talking to BuckleyInDaHouse, as he is about my best friend here at SRL and even was when I was not even SRL Member. Anyways, Buckley has quit. ( the following words are his and not mine ). He says that the people of SRL are not even concerned about the forums. The leechers are overidding the free section (once people get to ten posts and a week, thats it) and all the members want is power on the forums. No one even cares about the scripters, they just want the free stuff. I don't know if anyone had heard from JAD, but Buckley says he talked to JAD a few days ago. Says JAD left for the same reason. Many members have left that I used to know. I personally feel that most people in SSRL are here for forums not power, and I can definitely speak for myself. I won't go into that though. Should something be done? I personally don't know what it would be, but it seems the leaving members have the same idea. I think this forum is great and I don't want it to die…. Maybe you could require some sort of posting progress reports, or something to that extent.

I think many people have said something about this in the past although maybe not with the hard evidence or proof that you do, I believe I have addressed this issue in a similar way in the past, and I think we need to take action.

I think it really lies in a restructure of the forums as well as a forum "bot" that will auto - prune leechers and in-helpful people or people who don't contribute anything but smalltalk.

In my opinion, you could easily iron this out if you make it more of a "family / community". People need to understand the time and effort others put into scripting to truely appreciate it. Maybe do something like Mopar before they enter Junior Members section. give them a "test" and have a checkbox saying

"I agree that I fully understand our scripters put countless hours into the scripts here. I agree that I will post progress reports as well as solid feedback if I want to maintain my place as a Junior SRL Member"

this will not only show some people how hard we work, but will also kind of scare them into feedback because wouldn't know if we were monitoring or not..

Hmm… a family you say? Now what group is kind of based on that idea? :D

Speaking of that group WTF changed the categories although he didn't change all the subtext under them… oh well :p Either way I'll probably be doing some major work in there / for there soon, I've just been busy writing a paper for my English class.

SRL does not have enough people moderating for this stuff…

what we got like 5 mods? and 15 admins?

lets see now.. everyone no more slacking off :p you are all now working 24 hour shifts at 7 days a week. that should get around 10% of the leechers…

SRL is doing their best ( manually ) in keeping leechers away.
Wasent the free section for this kind of stuff?

I think you should have to post a simple rs script to get into juniors.

If you don't within a month of registration, you're deleted.

I really don't know what everyone has a problem with, the staff here really does a great job.

If anything, I like Smartzkid's idea of them having to post at least an attempt at a script in the first scripts forum and then they can be accepted by Mods/SSRL members. If it is more than 50 lines then they can be let in, or something along those lines (:p).

This is just for the last week…..As you can see…I'm not sure why my "Approval Rating" is so high, seems like a lot more people would hate me…Well, I guess these leechers do…..

I'm really taken back by these comments…it just wasn't WT-Fakawi that changed the forums as of recently…truth be told, I'm not sure if it was even his idea….but you can be sure of one thing…he does not act on stuff alone….these recent changes were discussed for a quite a long time amongst the administrators and moderators…..and the changes that were made, were thought to be the best way to deal with the current situation….

I don't like to publicly embarrass people, I realize the negative implications that can come from this, A lot of times SPAM post counts are just reset to zero and nothing more is said…more times than not, this is a gentle enough reminder of the SPAM Policy…more often then not, I just consolidate their posts into one, place a link to ….

Sticky: Attention Spammers and Leechers...
RAM

and then infarct them…….so if you see a post like this out there, you can be sure the situation was addressed….

I realize the importance of not turning anyone away, but we also have to keep in mind, that the majority of the users here are pre-adolescents…..and with this comes the immaturity…..it seems the older people are..the more mature they become, and the quicker they progress through the SRL Ranks….

Let me ask this question though…. Who is the SPAM really hurting ? This site is about cheating on a video game…we can only take it so serious….

I will say this…No Offense to you…but I hear so many people complaining about it, but there are only a select few that actually take the initiative to report the SPAM posts…These are the people that will be the next moderators here…While we do what we can, it will take a collective group effort to make this site run smoother.

Best Regards,

~RAM

EDIT: My Humble Opinions of course……

This conversation is taking a whole different direction. I didn't mean SRL staff is not doing their job. I meant that the users that come here to use the scripts care nothing about the scripters who make them. I just wish that these users would understand how much time is put into making the script.

In short: they don't appreciate them.

I wish that this community would take the turn of more of a family, like it was when I first came here. Not all these people shooting other people down because "they used a repeat statement and not for - do statement". Not all these arguements going on in the members section, all this strife over what? nothing but to satisfy themselves.

I never meant in any way that the staff was not doing their job w/ spam.

RAM, you have reported spam more than enough of your share on my powerminer thread.

On the thing of amount of admins and mods

I think its 7 admins and 13 mods last i counted…

But only like 4.5 mods are active…

*RAM - counts as 2 :p
*Yoho - does a lot of app moding
* Sumillion and Tara do sometimes but not often so i count them as 1.

but I agree I think we could use a few more mods and maybe a few more regular reports.

Sorry, I got off topic.

But yes more measures need to be put in to bring the focus back to scripting. I have no ideas on how to do it but I think the whole junior member thing needs to be pushed up a level.

pwnaz0r

2007-10-16 23:51:07

I was really talking about the members, that thread can be found in the members section. Sorry about all these threads but I got to thinking today about the way SRL used to be, back in December of 2006. People always gave feedback and seemed to appreciate the work scripters put in. People did not argue near as much, Members did not fight, the members script section was filled with new scripts, being added each day. Maybe each member should have to contribute a script to that section every month or so. That way, we know they are active, they know how to script, and that section progress's.

Sorry, I misunderstood what you were saying…I want everyone to have fun at this site, but I like it to try and stay on topic…..Just like I despise all of the off topic tutorials in Tutorial Island..I realize LIFE isn't all SCAR SCAR SCAR, but their is plenty of other places to post that junk….

and yes, it's the family atmosphere that me to this site….I'm not sure for any more changes ATM, but the "Cream rises to the top" , and the people that are serious about scripting will end up here…i look at the SSRL Forums as our personal safe haven…a place we can share our thoughts and idea, and have the mutual respect from other like minded people…and a place free of SPAM,( except for me a Darky's comments :P )….

Yes, I remember those good old days. I also have noticed that members have increasingly become hostile towards eachother. Maybe once people become a member they are put on a probationary period like of one month to test their behavior. As for the once a month contributions, some members weren't selected for their scripting abilities. Take me or Dunc for example, I am not an exceptional scripter, I can script perfectly fine and I'm competent and able to help people with scripts. But like I've found other ways to give back to the community, such as helping people or running the competition bank.

I think those are just they're excuses for leaving. In reality, they are probably bored and frustrated with SCAR. It has given them all they wanted already, and they no longer want/need it. I am in the same situation, I no longer have a desire for SCAR..

These forums are huge, of course there will be minor problems. I still drop in ever so often, but rarely post. However, I do watch over the Developer section and the other high level sections. All I can say is that the moderators and administrators are doing the best they can too deal with the issues that arise on every populated forum. The reason we have so few of them is because they only pick the most trusted, intellegent people from these forums. They don't want moderators who are power-hungry, which lets face it, even some developers are. Our moderators are fair, and give people a second chance. Other forums would kill (or pay a large some of cash) for the moderating team we have. Be thankful, this forum is one of the best, and it should stay that way no matter how many leechers we have.

My humble opinions :p

IMO i think that if they dont like leechers, that them.
The point of SRL inst to have a perfect forum (the forum is pretty nice i belive, you cant just get rid of leechers, thats completely impossible).
If JAD and Buckey left for only that reason, i think thats a really dumb reason to loose two good scripters.
The point of SRL is to make scripts that work well for all and to educate others of the power of SCAR/SRL.
Leaving a forum because of leechers is dumb, the Mods and Admins do the best they can do to their job, but like i said its not possible to have a forum without leechers.
I think they just need to deal with it and come back if they wish.

WT-Fakawi

2007-10-17 03:57:11

I am seriously considering increasing SSRL priviledges. And no, the new structure wasn't my idea, but I must say, as long as we stay active, we can cope with this situation. It doesnt make that much difference. Is amusing to see all the fake posts in our free scripts.

Besides, talents still rise up from the mass.

pwnaz0r

2007-10-17 16:59:26

I read all the posts and I think I convinced Buckley to come back. He left for another reason, which I would rather not say (nothing really bad, he prolly wouldn't want anyone to know though), and he has been doing some vb6. He knows much much more now and I think venturing into another language is a good way to improve your understanding and knowledge in SCAR, as it worked for me. Anyways, I know some aren't exceptional scripters in members, such as those who got auto-memberized, but I also know those people contribute greatly to the community and make up for what they lack in scripting elsewhere. I am truly here for the good of this community and I think most SSRL are. I guess that's one of the things SSRL was made for though (group of people who care about the community).

JAD

2007-11-05 16:05:21

That is not why I left.

I left because my life was getting busy, and I didn't have time for this forum any more.

I am getting more time, and may spend a little more time on this forum starting now, but I don't know if I'll be as active as I used to.

The main reason I left completely before was because I was busy, not because of leachers.

I'm back now and will be checking in on the forums every now and then.
