Do we produce enough quality scripts?

pwnaz0r

Well I was just wondering what the members section thinks. The question is are the scripts we publish quality or crap? For some of you that don't understand English very well (:D), I mean, are our scripts good enough to run 12 hours +? It seems recently that I have been trying out some scripts from our members( not members section, published by members ), and I am pleased to find that one runs for more than 4 hours? I don't know but if this is the case, I think we should try to take a bit more time in building and creating a script.

Some scripts are very hard to make run for 12+ hours i.e those far from lumby or with lots of walking and few waypoints etc… but i agree… if youve got an idea for a scirpt for me id be happy ot try

There are only a handful of really good scripts that will run 12+ hours…

I think when posting scripts it should be heavily tested beforehand…anything else should go in the SRL Test Corner…

So i basically think that we produce quality scripts, but not enough of them…

There are, as stated above, a small handful of scripts that can run for very long.

My scripts aren't that good, but they're better than 5 minutes.

My honest opinion is: We produce ENOUGH quality, and a lot of semi-good scripts, and very little crap.

My scripts run 12+ hours ;)

IE: Fight Cave Runner, ChopYBank (Team Effort with Tails111), both run more then 12 hours.

Problem is what can we make lol.

Theres only a certain number of Varrock miners you can have, and woodcutters. We need some fresh idea's and new places to script :).

Not much to do in free world lol, fish or woodcut.

thats how i feel. I wanna write a new script but I feel like everything has already been done. Im strictly f2p so that limits my choices alot.

oh yeah, and i dont release a script unless it can run double digit hours(h)

2007-10-16 19:04:12

I think posting your script that you know won't run double digit hours is a way for people who aren't great at scripting to get feedback. However I think our members should be able to post quality scripts the first time.

I also think you guys who are saying there aren't enough options aren't trying hard enough. Fire crafter maybe?

OOoooooh Yeah, ChopYBank has run long times straight. My recent air crafter wasn't that great but I have an amazing update to use DDTMs as Walking.

ChopYBank finds the trees in an avarge of 1 try. And banks almost flawlessy.
It turned out to be a big success now just to add A DDTM or DTM for finding the bank.

King of Knives

2007-10-16 19:29:19

Fire Crafter is already made. I'm currently on a script that I haven't seen before - MindCrafter :D But the walking is highly unstable. Like 95% of the script is walking, and walking needs failsafes and autocoloring (and autocolor-failsafes *GOSH*). It's a mess right now, it's has like 70% percent chance to go to the altar, craft and get back to fally. Way too little.

We need more RC-scripts. Earth for example? Crafting guild "InsertAction"'er ?

There are more ideas. But when I picture the free-world-area in RS, I pretty much see a script for each place of importance.

I just came back from a meet so forgive me if there are any errors in my typing…

Well, SRL Members is supposed to be the "scripters" at SRL. (We are suppose to head up this effort no? (Not counting devs :D)). Only every developer's script, I see tons of feedback and they get more attention. It seems we are so quick to judge others in SRL Members Applications on how bad their scripts are, yet I know some members who dont even know how to script? How can this been seen right? I think that the key to creating one of these scripts is examine how the devs do it.

  • They script for SRL, not just for the heck of making a script. Since they head up the include, they understand how much time and effort it takes to put in. you may think that they know so much more than you and that's why their scripts are better. In my opinion, its because they take so much time a build them so carefully.
  • They test with their own armies. With this in mind, they are not just scripting for some leechers, they are scripting to keep their armies alive, thus making them more carefully.

Those are just two of the points but I see scripts that are published after many many versions. Maybe we should follow this example? I personally frequently look up tutorials about every single thing while im scripting, just to make sure I did it right. You can judge my scripts for yourselves, I personally do not think very highly of them.

Many script run 12+ hours, but this is with multiple players. What the srl members need to shoot for is getting scripts to run around 10 hrs+ per person. Anyone can get a really good proggy if they have enough players. But what really separates a good script from a bad one are the quality of things that keep it running. Failsafes, Antirandoms, Walk backs, etc. For example, I spent a lot of time in my swamp tar collector, adding use of lumb home tele. I have my script reset itself with lumb home tele if it gets lost. Not only this, but it will reactivate players after 30 minutes because they can reset themselves with the home tele. It is things like these that help scripts run for a long time.

One way I think the SRL members can accomplish this is by working together more. Not only should we make scripts with 2 person teams, but 5 person teams. A variety of ideas can be used to make nearly flawless scripts with effective fail safes.

lol, just finished spanish hw, so if my english is bad, im sorry

Pwnaz0r, you're right about the Dev's getting more attention. In fishing section, Wizzup?'s 3 scripts are always on the top (no sticky:P), but my 2 fishing scripts have fallen to the bottom like rocks attacked to even bigger rocks!

But yes, 12+ hours is somewhat easier to achieve with multiple players, than with one. Quality is 12 hours per person. But that its barely possible, for in that time we should have encountered a mime, according to statistics.

My best script has run for 1 ½ hour (1 player), when I manually stopped it. I don't know what my scripts limits are for working, but I honestly do not believe they can reach 5 hours on one person.

My MindCrafter (currently working on it) is, right now, highly unstable. I'm trying to make this a very, very good script, because it would be the only one of its kind. But unfortunately I'm a Priq-faq-newb at using proper failsafes. I'm too damn lazy, but I'm gonna work hard to make it work. Real hard.

I don't really produce scripts for gain, or use them for gain. I just am interested in programming and colors :).

In my opinion, I think it is more fun to help people than to script for myself… I get a big enough headache from trying to keep my Java and C++ standards strait :p.

BTW: Future note, but I believe if you have parenthesis inside parenthesis you should either use brackets for the second layer, or just put one ("1") parenthesis on the end. Like so: (I am parenthesised (so am I!). FTW :)

I guess im different than some people. I always write scripts that I currently need. Then I run it for however long, and keep fixing it up. Then if I feel its working good enough, and its something people would actually use, I release it. and btw, I already wrote a Firecrafter, and mindcrafter:rolleyes: they need to be updated to SRL4 though, and probably reworked(neither ran more than 4 hours).

I'll probably start posting some scripts in the testing section, too. If there not up to calibur.

I like that idea. If you used some sort of program like Tubes, or a VPN of some sort, you could really get some good work done.

My attitude has changed. I used to just release the script, now I test the script and tweak till I can get at least 12 hours.

pwnaz0r

2007-10-16 23:42:34

Thats the way it should be, regardless of how many voted yes, the no's outweigh it which tell you something. I did not mean to start anything or insult anyone's script in any way, as it would not be my place or according to my attitude, I wish only to raise awareness in the fact that this is the core scripting group, and our script should reflect it.

2007-10-17 00:36:40

Good point. At least next time if i want to start script run time will be taken as a final result of script release.

I think they are quality, but not "quality", cant put it in words =/

But some people dont have the chance to test if it runs for 12 hours, my case, when I go to school, I leave before my mom goes to work, and she'll make sure every extra electricity is shut down, and when I go to bed, same thing!

I wonder how well does my coal miner run when I get it out of beta..

@someone loser who is interested xD: "CM4D News! : After in total 10 hours of tweaking, I today noticed that the problem was in… (DrumRoll).. I had this for-loop, and when I was doing something with the var thats running in the for loop like "If(ThatVar > SomeThing)Then.." well I had another var there instead of the loop var -.-

Pyro

About devs getting more views that is not neccesarily true. Its just generally who has more views. Stays with the top views. And so most of us would aswell. If you know a miner is flawless and works perfectly. Would you go use a unkown one? Its noty just devs. My miner is struggling also. Works perfect. The people that use it are happy. But meh.

I think I've figured out the secret to making you script get attention: MASSIVE red text, screaming at the viewer how good the script is. That, or making everything sensationalistic - "Solves randoms!!!!! Mines iron!!! Walks to guild!!!!!!!!" Seriously, look at the most popular scripts in free at the moment (jukka's guild miner and rick 4 srl vem) :p

IMO people produce alot of quality scripts :) Although I dont really use SCAR that much, and I havent produced any scripts in a looong time (i have too many better things to do in life than scripting).. But if you put a simple image with fake stats of your script you will get lots of clicks.

when the top poster boreas has it in his sig, option 2 :p

The point was, focusing on advertising isn't going to help increase your product's quality.

Disagree. The red large text makes it all worth while. Makes it look professional. If i posted a script in plain text. Said "It does what it says. Flawless". Even if it was the best out there prob wouldnt be used that much. Mind you i think the stats say alot. But some people use them in the wrong way. Making the script not work if people dont enter stats. Dont take it so seriously. When i own you all on script stats by not forcing people to use em ill be laughing ahaha :p

Wow. I am just like that!

I think as members, we should produce better, more quality scripts. Remember, quality > quantity ;). However, I think a lot of people just script to see the responses that they get. Its easier to script when you are scripting for a genuine purpose; whether it be to prove to yourself you can script or train your army.

And besides, the only reason that the dev's script have pages and pages of responses is because they are really, really good (of course, the devship helps too) :D

True, but I believe that "selling your script for more than it's worth" with an advertisement will only annoy your users and if anything, discourage them to continue to help you. Either way, I truly believe that the best advertisement is honesty and hard work instead of red text and fancy graphics.

To the comments about 10-12 hours per person. I would like to point out the fact that randoms make this extremely difficult.

pwnaz0r

Yet isnt this why SRL was formed? Solve randoms and if it can't switch players? Are we not fulfilling the "reason" SRL was formed?

my .02 cents…would be there are A LOT of scripts out there but there are quite a few also that are done by non-srl members…i would say for the most part the ones produced by SRL members are good quality, my autofighter runs 12+ hrs easy, my powercutter on the other hand cant get that much b/c it gets more unsolvable randoms when woodcutting compared to fighting…so there again, it kind of depends on the type of script being used…
