Scar Memory Leak.

2006-03-05 11:17:50

In our search to get rid of global variables we stumbled across a possible Memory Leak in Scar. Run this program and report me after how many times it gives a "out of Memory" error…Also, state the amount of physical memory you have.

I got 512mb of ram fawki, and a crapload of other memory hogging programs running(namly azureas (written in java)) while running this SCAR program too, and am already up to 50000 times, Ill let it keep running to see if it ever happens, but up till now it kinda looks like its going to get to big for an "int" to handle before I run out of memory ;)

Bebe

2006-03-05 11:41:51

Well is it currently on about 50k tries and nothing so far. I have 1gb RAM.
I'll edit when I get an "out of memory" error.

Other programs I have running:
MSN
Firefox
VB6
AIM
Windows Media Player
Another SCAR
Hex Workshop 4.2

Nothing too RAM consumming though.

Edit:

i got 2 gigs of ram and a 3500+ processor i hit bottom at like 60k times 62k? depends what i got going on for pagefile. Its literal memory on your processor that is being consumed not ram. I closed scar and my PF dropped 50k rofl

I watched my PF for about 10k tries and it stayed within 500-620
But it was my CPU that went up from 23 to 97 and stayed in that range.

lol silly goose your cpu went up because your waiting .001? seconds and loading and freeing like 5 bitmaps rofl not kidding ur cpu went up if you let the script run for a little way (about 50k loads) then it freaks out it easily adds 50k to your PF on ur CPU. Trust me haha.

you can get kind of confused when talking about memory and storage
memory=ram=temporary
storage=hdd=permanent
right click on my computer and it should tell you your ram

bring up the task manager and look at your available physical memory when you do this, it goes down, at a pretty fast rate

so a computer with twice as much ram should be able to run this test twice as long

[edit] if you look at the process thing, the memory used by scar does increase as you run this, but dont worry because it gets freed when you quit scar

46079 Times with 512mb of ram

Flyboy

2006-03-05 18:59:52

This will make it run a billion times faster and still give enough info for our purposes.

In the above code replace this:
 writeln('Loaded dtm ' + IntToStr(tries) + 'Times');

With this:
if (tries mod 100 = 0) then writeln('Loaded dtm ' + IntToStr(tries) + 'Times');

I'll run it over night.. It doesn't seem to be doing anything on me :)

XxKanexX

2006-03-06 00:03:22

I'm not sure if it would make it faster but, wouldn't status be easier.

status('Loaded dtm ' + IntToStr(tries) + ' Times');

Since when the debug box gets quite full it might take up more memory to tell it to add a line and move everything o.o;;

I have no idea about stuff like this, So, meh.

Edit: Nvm, then if it stops you don't know what it was up to D:

I want Pwnd's computer… Is it possible the memory leak is just the debug window growing to a huge size? I thought there was a limit to how big it could get.

Renax

is it possible that the bmps will never be loaded and freed 50k+ when you run a script ? so this doesn't matter to much ?

c) change the report to addreport

i suspect it is at least part of it

i added like:
if(tries mod 1000 =0)then

and you can see scar memory usage drop in task manager
it also seems to use a lot less memory when minimized..

the debug area is not the problem, I ran a test and it clears itself after a few thousand lines, just repeat writeln() and see what happens ;) :D

2006-03-10 03:10:58

Please run this test program.

I have elliminated a lot of the variables that could throw off the results. This should give us a better idea of exactly what the culprit is.

This will test:
loading and unloading bitmaps only
loading and unloading dtm's only
loading and unloading both bitmaps and dtm's
and lastly, it will test just using writeln a pile of times

program New;
{.include SRL\SRL.scar}

{
please run this script until it dies from memory issues.
note how many times it ran and then change AreaToTest and do again.
when all four settings are attempted please post your results on the
fourm.

Set CompSpeed to adjust the lag on your computer. If you are needing to
use your computer while running this test, adjust the number higher.

If you are just testing only you can set to zero but this will LAG big time
but make the test go real fast.

Thanks for your help.

I ran these the first three setings all at once last night (and still running) without crashing yet.
I have the CompSpeed set to 1 which makes it a bit laggy as it is using 100% of the CPU.

I'm starting to hope I might not ever crash… I will leave it running for the morning as well.

Now we are getting somewhere! Did anyone try option 4? I ran the others (1 - 3) for 24 hours straight without any problems. I will run option 4 tonight.

We need to determine exactly what is causing the memory error so we can avoid it in SRL.

WT-Fakawi

2006-03-11 12:49:37

Option 4 led to the dreaded Blue Screen!

I hadn't seen that one in a long time, but Scar actually throwd it in my face!

I think that about unravels (sp) the mistery. Don't spam the debug!

Pyro

2006-03-11 21:30:45

I added a writeln(times) thingie magigy in it. In every repeat so it 1,2,,3,4,5 real fast. And boom brought up blue screen. Mind you my comp is crap but ya

Flyboy

2006-03-11 22:06:38

I just ran option 4:
Tested Writeln only 5289000 times
still no problems.

I had the wait time at zero… is it my computer is so crappy it cant go fast enough to crash :confused:
Fakawi could you try option 4 again with a long wait time… I suspect you are overloading the I/O stack. Lets see if just giving it enough time to get it to the screen does the trick. (you might have to remove my setup protection if you go more than 10 milliseconds ;)

ADDED:

Ok, here's the deal. I'm not convinced writeln is the only cause of problems, I think it is a second problem. two people reported blue screens from using option 4 of my test script. This is a different error to the original problem we were investigating which gave an out of memory error.

We need to be able to reproduce the error to isolate what is the cause before we start removing all the globals from SRL.

This is now set up to load/unload 20 dtm/bmps at a time to see if this will overload the system. Since my computer is crap, its results are nonconclusive, so need others to test on theirs.

Hmmm kinda flyboy. I got the blue screen using kinda my own option.
I wrote writeln('tested' +inttostr(times)+'') into the BITMAP repeat. Try doing that.

Watch your page file usage on your processor it gradually goes up up and away

i got 2 gigs of ram and a 3500+ processor i hit bottom at like 60k times 62k? depends what i got going on for pagefile. Its literal memory on your processor that is being consumed not ram. I closed scar and my PF dropped 50k rofl

crp man ur comp is 1337 my comp only got 256 ram and my other comp got 512 and my parents use the 512 one
