Examining The RS Color System

Facts about the RS Color system
  • Colors do not rotate when you log in and out, you have to etheir change from a members world to a free world (or vice versa) or go through a loading screen

As you are reading this, I am probably picking colors for Edgeville road (update today) for an autocolor. While picking colors, i decided to try to find out as much about the rs color system as i can. Here are some results.

ColorPick2 - Hue jumped up from 11 to 15. Sat and Lum stayed the same. As for RGB the were different increases and decreases.

ColorPick3 - Hue stayed the same, Sat stayed the same. Lum increased by 1. RGB jumped around.

ColorPick4 - Hue decreased by 1. Sat and lum stayed the same. RGB Jumped around.

ColorPick5 - Luminance increased by 2.

Are we for certain that rs uses RGB and not HSL? It seems the changes are pretty consistent in HSL (as in user randomness set) as one value increases at 1 or 2, but in RGB all the numbers jump around. Any ideas?

If you make Math.random() return a constant number, only the ground colors (road, grass, dirt) will change since they are sent to the server, those colors change every time the map is reloaded. P.S. making Math.random() return a constant number may be detectable, as it is used in other parts of the client as well.

As far as do they use HSL or RGB it doesn't really matter, a color is a color and those are just two different ways of representing them.

If we knew if they did it HSL or RGB, wouldn't we be able to autocolor more efficiently?

They modify the colors in RGB form, but as mopar said, that makes no difference, because with some simple math you can modify hue, sat, and lum in RGB also, and its quicker then converting to HSL and converting back to RGB. If one works better for recognition, use it ;)

Top colour is the lightest rock/stone (brown) colour, bottom one is cactus.
The relation between these two is always the same….

Interesting discovery there, but over how long of a period of time did you do this, and where you sure you have a loading screen in between?

I've noticed, although not necissarily researching this, that in RS there are Main colors and then Subsidiary colors that branch off from each of the main colors. The reason I say this is because when I am picking colors for things I tend to notice a large amount of colors starting with 4 - 5 numbers and then minor variations in the last 3 - 4 numbers. Maybe showing that those Main Colors change within RS and then the subsidiary colors change as well according to the main colors.

I dunno, but its a thought.

Taken over a period of more then a month, one group of colours a week.
And no, not a loading screen, but a whole computer restart :p
The bottom one is taken before the interface update :f:

Nice maybe you found a constant Main color like what I was talking about, this could be interesting. You should try getting a lot of samples of those colors and see if we can figure out a constant change in RS colors (if there is one).

math.random() anyone?

Hmmmm? Whats math.random()?

Function in Java, returns a random number (much like scars random)

Ahh… I was going to say, that looked like Java, but I thought he was talking about SCAR. That really doesn't help very much though I must say.

But nothing in the computer world, or in the real world is truly random, we've always got the Chaos Theory. :D

And another thing, Runescapes colors aren't "Random" there is a distinguishable pattern in how their colors work, and like Markus posted above about those colors, there must be other colors that change like that as well, with a direct relation. You can disprove his data unless you can prove he made it up.

The only thing left to do is find this kind of "combinations".

Yea, well as far as I can tell, if we can get a few people recording colors of something specific, over time I think we could develop a reasonably specific pattern, or at least get a few color patterns defined.
