Coding A Script.

How do you guys go about coding a script?

This is my procedure.
  • Think of a rough outline.
  • Straight out code the rough outline.
  • See if it works, if it doesnt re-code until it does.
  • Watch my script run, and have a pen and paper ready to make notes.
  • List down any improvements that could be made, in as much detail as possible, while I am watching the script run.
  • Code it.
  • Repeat the last few steps.

Me:

  • Make the form
  • Get bored and quit the script

Edit: I'm very interested to see how RAM, Wizzup and WT-Fakawi do it..

I do it bit by bit. First I start off by making the template, just the DeclarePlayers and randoms, etc. Then usually the walking, cause thats the boring part, but I'm actually starting to enjoy making DDTM's and radialwalking lol. Then comes the mining procedures, since thats the only type of script that I make these days. Could take between 2 days and 2 weeks depending on if im lazy at the time. Then comes the tweaking and running overnight until its flawless :D, then I post it.

My form is always first…since I need variable declarations and the rest of it.

Holidays are quite good. Just started today though…having fun on SRL :) You?

I've never seen RAM script…?

Well…

  • Think of an idea (takes about a day)
  • Make some functions that are included in SRL, on the pretence that I can "improve" them
  • I might make a form at this point
  • After working about 3 days on it, I get bored.

the last time i made a script
  • think of script
  • think of interesting but unessisary things to add
  • put in randoms, declare-players, etc
  • put in all procedures(just the name, begin, end)
  • start coding
  • release it
  • have other people tell me if it works
  • fix(always nessisary)

  1. Post Requesting Ideas
  2. Get best idea
  3. Check area of best idea
  4. Decide wether SS or RS
  5. Think of a good outline how to walk in the area
  6. how to find objects
  7. code
  8. run
  9. antirandoms
  10. fix
  11. release
  12. fix
  13. proggy post

-Think of a script
-Make the entire script with empty procedures and functions, sorted by what they do
-Fill in the procedures and functions with working code and test

I usually spend a lot of time testing small miniature scripts that have a simple task such as walking a short distance or testing a new technique, then I keep all these miniature scripts in a big folder that I take a look at when ever I give making a new script a shot.

Surely you were thinking of someone else when you put my name next to Faki's and Wiz's ;)…

Actually, Scripting is very frustrating to me…

I make rough outlines, name all of my procedures…start to fill them in… then jump to the next project….I have so many unfinished scripts ….

I do have templates that I have made up, to test certain procedures and functions, etc…I find it easier to isolate it from the main script you are working on, to make sure there is no faults associated with it…then add them together when you are ready…

I get more satisfaction from helping other people refine their own scripts, than creating my own…I usually sit down with a pen and paper and keep notes of all aspects of the script…sometimes I will make the changes myself…but more often than not, I have found that the Original Authors would rather just know about the bugs and fix it themselves, then have someone else editing their script…an understandable issue of Pride…

I also try to recreate all possible scenarios that the script could encounter and cause it to malfunction, and see how it deals with it….Of course Randoms are not possible…but..No Axes..Getting lost..closed doors, etc are all variables that must be addressed and fail safes implemented….

Everyone has their own style..it's just about finding what works best for you and improving on it…

Good Luck,

~RAM

I usually just think up an idea
Set up declare players and such
Code each individual procedure and test them

I'm really trying to start to code the whole script then test and fix bugs because I like that way better but I can't break my habit of doing it this way.
