SPAM influx!

WT-Fakawi

2007-09-04 17:41:59

As predictable, there has been a flood of spam. Is there another way we can avoid this?

 1. By modifying the free script rules to two weeks delay and 0 posts maybe?
 2. By giving Most Wanted top-3 scripts for free? (nice project!)
 3. By Trolling the noob posts?
 4. By New Posts viewrules, prioritizing for example?

For me, this is to hard to keep if it is going to stay like this. Its difficult to weed out the right channels of activity. Its exhausting.

I propose option two, maybe even more versions of same concept (i.e. two essence miners). I prefer peace and tranquility over I-have-to-post-10-posts mentality.

You're right, it really does just show us how many leechers there are at SRL.

Your rule 1) would give basically all of the members access to the Junior SRL members section since most of the leechers have been registered here for a long time.

2) They would still spam just because they know after the 10 posts they will get access to a larger variety of scripts.

3) What do you mea by trolling noob posts? Deleting them? imfracting the users?

4) I don't understand your number 4, sorry :(

Even so, I think we should maybe think about option 1? even though most leechers will have most of the scripts, the influx of 100 registrations per day will not.

If this is put into effect, we could easily have a quick forum clean up as well to remove all of the noob posts

Can you make it so only posts with a certain number of characters count towards the 10?

YoHoJo

2007-09-04 20:14:21

Leechers get 3 basic scripts right when they sign up (or after a certain time limit).(Power Scripts only)
If they want anything else, they need SRL member
=) Get nice and strict with them.
Post count shouldnt be a variable as it will just lead to tons of spam, too hard ot keep track of 1000s of spamming leechers.

WT-Fakawi

2007-09-05 02:22:16

2. Reduce postcount to zero. Give them three verified (by you, me, SSRL) Most-Wanted Scripts. All they want is to make "money", so let them.
3. Posts made by Trolls are not visible to anyone, except the Troll. This is a wonderfull option for notorious scammers/spammers. But this wont work for newbees I am afraid.
4. If your posts, or SSRL or Members posts would pop up in the new posts page with a seperate color, that would help immensely too.

I would like more feedback from you guys, or I will take this thread down one level :)

I think that we need to come down hard on the spam posts. Meaning, delete all the spam posts we see and if the user continues to spam, we give them an infraction, eventually leading to a ban. If we make a few examples of this, then I doubt the others will continue :)

YoHoJo

I say forget all post count rules.
Why should WE have to work harder for their stupidness?
Overall i say
Give them access to one powerminer and general sections and tutorials.
If they want anything more than a powerminer, they need to become SRL Member.
This is how i always wanted it :p, may be a bit harsh but i think its nice =).
Overall, i just dont think we should have to work any harder than we already do by having to monitor the 1000s of nobody posts made, i think post count should just be out of the pi cute and it should all be about if you can script well enough to be SRL Member.

It is already set that if you get 3 (maybe 5, i can't remember :p) infractions in 1 month then you are automatically banned.

Using some users as an example doesn't work i'm afraid. There are so many categories, and so many leechers that it doesn't make a big enough effect on the others.

I kinda like YoHoJos idea actually, but give them 10 scripts to use and thats all. Then if they want more, they have to apply for SRL Junior member status saying why they think they deserve it? Maybe we could get SSRL members to help with apps and accepting them if we think they are good enough? No need for lots of peopleto vote, you are all experienced enough

I dont really like the idea of the applying for Junior SRL status, there would be 100's of apps to go through per day..it could be done if we all put in, but can we all be bothered, and would it all be worth it? Its a lot of effort for such a small thing that doesnt really have much of an effect. We definately need a different system to what we have though, all this new thing is doing is creating more spam.

nielsie95

2007-09-05 05:27:30

We only need to do that for the leechers who already were here.. So it will be a hard time for once.. But "new" leechers wouldn't even bother reading about Junior member.

The Claw

2007-09-05 05:41:43

They would find out though. I mean, they would see other posts about it while looking around for scripts to leech and then they would apply. But when it comes down to it, do we really want the leechers? They just waste bandwidth, time and effort, and just clog up the board. It would be ok if they were the type who posted proggies and feedback etc, who were good for the community, but the majority are the people like the guy in your post up there.

Just a fun fact…1,466 of our users have more than 10 posts. 29, 082 of our users have 10 posts or less. I've got an idea..but it won't be popular, or noticed probably so meh.

Starblaster100

2007-09-05 07:07:17

But leechers help by maintaining the site - they click on the ads and generate money to keep it running. Thats the reason for keeping them here

YoHoJo

2007-09-05 19:20:54

Ok, i further edit my idea.
Change the one to maybe 3 Scripts.
These scripts should be wokred on by all of the devs or whoever has the time.
ONE PERFECT powerminer
ONE PERFECT powerchopper
ONE PERFECT powerfisher

This will be enough to demonstrate the powers of scar to the open public.
After that they need SRL Member if they want anything else.
IMO SRL JR Member is a useless user group?
You either script well, or you dont.
But correct me if im wrong =). I like where this is going so far though.

WhiteShadow

2007-09-05 22:10:05

I really don't think we should even have an SRL Junior Rank, their just active leechers/ spammers. Not really helping with lowering the amount of spam. :S

I think the SRL Junior script board should be cleansed and moved to the members section. Delete the whole rank. Or make SRL Junior Members something you have to apply for.. ;/ really easy to get in..

Yoho power stuff plus a non profitable banker.

If we able to give power to SSRL to take care of JSRL apps, and enough people are willing to help, then I say do that and scrap the post count thing.

I don't have a problem doing applications. Just read through their posts, check longetivity and activity, and then click a 'In' or 'Out' button. If somebody submits more than one application a week then they get an automatic week ban.

Something like that.

If that's the way we go, I wouldn't mind looking through a few apps, either.

-Delete JSRL

-Only allow people to apply for membership after they've posted at least two? scripts

Also, I think "Junior SRL Members" is giving them way too much credit. I don't see a reason why there shouldn't be an extra user group but 95% of them will never become SRL Members.

WT-Fakawi

2007-09-06 18:06:07

No, Junior Member is their for a reason, even though it doesnt mean a thing in terms of threshhold. If Dank can get the privs right, turn their color to YellowGreen, they will automatically have a "community" feeling, this will lead to better compliance of rules, improve contribution and thus will lighten the spirit.

After giving it a lot of thought the last 48 hours and wading through endless meaningless posts, I have come to the conclusion there is little we can do against this if we maintain the current ruleset. We have created the need for chitchat, now we should give them a subforum to chitchat. This is both an elegant and ingenious solution.

If I outweigh the positive against the negative at this moment, I say lets keep it this way, because if we alter the rules yet again we will loose credibility, and I'd do anything to keep credibilty, because we rightfully earned that! Besides, I have seen a couple of old lurkers coming out of their trenches these days, and I actually see more people trying hard to write things down even meaningfull things. So thats positive too.

So what I propose is:

1

Create a subforum for Runescape Chat, with categories like:
 • Bot Stories
 • PK
 • Pictures
 • RS <-> RS market

stuff like that. Need more ideas.

2

Make a couple of good scripts and release them. I am in favour of a couple of good old Bankers as opposed to PowerScripts, because these will be our Best Advertisement. (<- Bold) I am not at all afraid of raping the game, since SCAR allows us only one client per computer, and average not longer than 8-10 hours. I dont think that is a problem for Jagex, if so, they would have long ago complained about Wizzup? essenceminer profits. I think it is a piece of cake for us to make such scripts and we'd be the most genereous cheating-forum in the World. Moreover, its what they all want!, so why not give it to them. We could even create subforums for them.

3

Maybe it is possible to rank the new posts page, by forum as opposed to by data. Maybe you can even colorize the different posts.

These are my thoughts now, I hope I can all talk you into my direction. In my opinion it is the best way we can tackle the situation without loosing our face.

when you do that, get all of us to make a few threads (especially Bot Stories), it helps to get the ball rolling, people might not like posting on an empty forum.

Interesting, but remember simple is nice, if we have too many forums, and rules etc is just becomes a mess. I think that Waist of Time out should all be merged into just one forum, "Offtopic", SCAR forums should be taken off the main page but not deleted, and these new forums be put into "Runescape", then i think it would work well

Nah, that was just a figure of speech, but I am glad you all do not take offence to this idea :)

So, is this the way to go for now? Just create a Forum for rs-related chitchat? If so, give me more categories…..And release three good banking scripts to the mass, for free?

Furthermore, I would really like to raise the topic of scripting certificates. I do not a lot of time at the moment, but I think that Seniors will all be quite capable of judging scripts. We have our best man who wrote a wonderful framework for that…. What are your ideas on this Star?

Starblaster100

2007-09-07 07:02:06

Truthfully, I can't think of anymore boards. If you are going to add so many new boards though, i would split up J-SRL-M and Reg users boards to make them separate - just looks nicer :)

I like your certificates idea, but how would this be implemented? A PHP system saying its been Certified? Just a note in the script? A forum modification on the thread the script is posted in to put like a little icon there?

I like the idea, and i definitely think the SSRL members are talented enough (probably even more than me) to decide which scripts are great and which aren't according to those 7 points i decided on (can easily be changed)

/reminisce time

At Kaits.com, to apply for a script sale, you had to submit your script and then the staff would look over it and decide if you could sell it or not. How it worked was you out your script into the php form with all the details and click submit. The staff then log into an external system, review the script and decide if it is good enough to sell or not.

it was located here but the link has been removed. basically it said something like:
Stress Miner by Starblaster100
Price / Info here
Certified by Dylock
(Link to Thread)
So the certified page links to the script thread, and the script thread page links to the certified page, just so no one can spoof certification.

I was thinking we could do the same thing but with a few modifications…

Have the script submitted like the SRL member apps are submitted. Then an auto thread is created in the SSRL member section where we can all comment about it, and decide whether it should be certified or not.

If so, a Dynamic PHP pic, just like a userbar is created saying
Stress Miner by Starblaster100 - SRL Certified
As the dynamic pic is clicked, it then takes the user to the thread the script is posted in. The user can then put the pic in his sig / send the link around to prove it is certified.

What do you think about that?

SRL RANKS

Leecher/New User:
 • Access to few scripts. Atleast 2 wanted scripts.
 • Tutorials
 • A scripting help section, only

Once the Leecher/New user reaches, say 15 post count:
 • Has permission to APPLY for SRL Junior Member status.
 • Must submit a script or snippet.
 • Must show they can script, atleast a little.
 • Maybe the form asks them some questions also.
 • SSRL Members + are able to accept/deny these scripts.
 • The application proccess has 3 boards. Pending/Accept/Denied
 • How will non-Admins give SRL Junior Member ranks out?

SRL Junior Member
 • Have access to all non-SRL Member scripts.
 • Can see Leecher/New user boards.
 • Can see Timeout/Waste Of Time/General Boards.
 • ^ This board should be added to SRL Public Forum as MSI/Smart. Sub-Forum with sections.
 • Remove SRL Installation Problems. SRL Bugs cover this.
 • Once SRL Junior Member has reached 50-100 posts they can see the Apply for SRL Member link.

SRL Member
 • Applications orders as Accept/Deny/Pending.
 • Possibly MSI can be a SRL Junior Member Board as they know something about scripting.
 • Rest same.

If you guys go with this setup, New Users/Leechers should know about how its going to be done.

lol i was thinking along the lines of releasing like 3-5 power scripts to them…

and it checks the lvl of which they are powering up and lets say every 10 lvls they have to answer a question to be able to continue to auto… simple questions that you could find by looking at a tutorial or something.

and then if they pass that question it gets saved to a file on their computer or something.

this way they actually go to SRL and look up the answer kind of forcing them to learn it a little bit…

if they learn a little bit they may get excited over learning something and attempt to make a script.

and if they do not pass the question they get asked another one if they missed 5 in a row it locks up and links to a tutorial for them to read? idk

and the questions wouldn't be to hard to make….

Town

Make a tally in a .txt file everytime they start a script. Every 8-10 tallys they have to answer a question, just using ReadLN's. Make a list of up to 60 or so and then just put them in a case and hide them somewhere, call the procedure something funky and call it in SetupSRL.

Dark_Sniper

so they have to download it and put it in.

Ok, I just read all of this so I'm going to try and sum up my ideas about all of this.

First, we need to drastically lower the amount of "Bad Leechers". How I think we could do this is quit simple, although it may be difficult server side. Firstly I think we should close SRL Members registration for about 1 - 2 weeks depending on how long it takes to clean up the forums. Secondly, I say we re - do the Forums, yes I know they just where reconstructed but I think that they need to be Re-Reconstructed into a more pleasant and Organized way.

I say then, to clean up the server we'd delete all posts / threads that are older than 2 - 3 months old.

// My brother just told me this idea and I thought it was pretty good so here's his idea //

He thinks that we should make all accounts on a time limit that makes it so that if you account doesn't post at least once every 1 - 2 Weeks your account would go dormant for 5 Days and then would be deleted. To remove your account from forced dormancy you just go into options. Then in all profiles there would be the option to make your account manually dormant that would make your account unable to view any posts, except the basic un registered viewable posts. Which would keep people who need to leave for a while a chance to keep their account because they could just make it dormant.

//End of his idea, only problem I see is spam.//

Back to my idea. Anyways after we delete all of the old posts we would delete the accounts that are inactive, meaning that they haven't posted / viewed anything in "X" Days. After all those people are gone, we'd delete all accounts that have < 10 Post and Longevity > 1 Month. After thats all said and done we'd focus on re-organizing the forums as far as stopping spamming and what not.

To stop the spam I think that we should develop a small group of people that would just give infractions to people who spam and if they receive "X" infractions then they are IP Banned for 2 Months. This group could be a compilation of SSRL Members and Normal Members who'd like to contribute. Also I think your right, we need to make those categories for spam / useless chat more appealing / apparent because I don't think that many people realize there are places for that.

As far as limiting scripts goes I think we need to give 3 Power[]ing Scripts and 1 Banking Script that are pretty top notch to the public and keep all the others in a more secluded group like JSRL but just make JSRL a little more difficult to achieve and make it unrelated to post count which will also reduce spam. To get into JSRL I think you should either have to take a dynamic quiz about SRL / SCAR or get bumped in by a mod / JSRL Memberizers.

All in all I just think we need to close SRL Down for a few days, put all projects on hold stop SRL for the time being and get this all done. After the forums are restructured we can return to what we where doing and have the satisfaction and ease knowing that the forums are all clean and sparkly.

Also on a side note, but still on subject. SRL Members… is really, really going downhill, it may be that I have high expectations of scripts but 80 - 90% of the people that have gotten excepted into SRL lately I think should not have, and yes I'm sure there is someone here that doesn't think I should be in SSRL, but honestly if you look at the Apps is kind of depressing sometimes. I look for uniqueness and Fail safes as well as good use of SRL and if I don't find it I don't think that person should be in SRL… but apparently the Members do…

P.S. Claw: I think if your script used an adapted version of my FindFish it would be pretty much perfect lol :p. Also keep a look out for my new and improved script, lol :D

I like it, but I think two months is too long. By then, most spammers would have probably moved on to a new community or given up on RS cheating. I'd say either one month or forever.

Yes, something should be done about SRL Members.

Pretty sure I've posted this idea before, though I'm not really sure:
Randomly demote people to JSRL, after which they'd have to re-apply for membership. After being demoted and re-accepted, they'd be safe from demotion for a month or so.

Same goes for JSRL if the quiz is implemented.

2007-09-13 18:07:13

The reason I have the dormancy stage is just in case there is a person who is inactive for a week or two and cant get on SRL Right away or hasn't been posting can save their account rather than it being there one day and gone the next, but this may give leechers a chance to just bypass our "ousting" of them.

And for the banning, I think 1 month would be good, and if they where just leeching and gave up on SRL then there you go, inactive account 1 month +, and its gone, 1 leecher down.

Maybe not post a script before they can apply but at least a snippet judged "O.K.", and yes the time limit sound like a good idea, so people can't just spam the quiz to get all of the answers (The quiz wouldn't tell you the correct answers but it would tell you the question you got wrong.)

Also, yes I know closing it for a week would be costly but I think IMHO that it would be 1 of the most beneficial things we could do, because I think that would free a lot of bandwidth up. Also by deleting the old threads I mean inactive old threads, which also would clear up a lot of bandwidth.

Also, another thing I had noticed is that you can attach a hell of a lot of files before it stops letting you. Maybe you should limit that more for the lower ranked members and increase it as you advance through the community?

Also, another thing I had noticed is that you can attach a hell of a lot of files before it stops letting you. Maybe you should limit that more for the lower ranked members and increase it as you advance through the community?

Many people get locked out of SRL Members for one reason or another but still contribute alot to the forums. I guess it wouldn't be hard to get around with the Community Member (Right?) status but it's just a thought.

I kinda like what Demonoid.com does.

They open their regs for only one weekend a month or something like that. If we did something to make it more difficult for the noobs to get in they may feel privileged…making them work harder (maybe…)

Just a thought…

@ Town - How would it not be beneficial to delete old threads / posts all they do is take up space and freeing space "should" help the server perform better, but I do understand that people do read them, but I doubt a lot of people do. It was just a suggestion though, I'm not saying "do this" although they probably wouldn't listen to me even if I did say that. :p

@ Ruroken - That sounds like a good idea, are you talking about SRL Members or the actual forum registration though?

I say put all 6 month old + threads into an 'archive'

That'd be pretty hard to create though, no?

No… I don't think so but who knows, I haven't managed a forums for a long time… but make it so that the files are compressed and you like have to download them or something because if you just moved them all it would make it look better but it won't improve the performance at all.

I don't think large amounts of threads affect server performance very much; text isn't very space-intensive either.

An archive w/ search archive option (disabled by default) should lessen load on the server from searches; but I doubt that'd make a very big difference.

If member regs were only open x day(s) a month, we'd be swamped with regs whenever they open.

This is true… but if you think about how many threads there are that aren't used anymore it begins to add up. Even if the posts are small and not server intensive they do add up over time. As far as closing regs for a while / keeping them open "X" days a month I think your right we'd be swamped with a huge amount of them whenever regs where open, but I guess if we get them in all at once people would have an easier time looking into them since they wouldn't have to worry about new ones popping up all of the time.

Also this post just in text took up 974 bytes.
