DTM's vs Bitmaps

I much prefer using DTM's over Bitmaps for item finding. I have been wondering why SRL uses bitmaps for all items instead of DTM's. I'm merely wondering why, and if people would like, I also volunteer myself for making DTM's for all items in SRL.

dtms are good for finding items, and they are smaller, faster, etc, BUT

a dtm will and can match more than one itemm. It is tricky to get a dtm that ONLY matches a certia n thing, becuase instead of searching for all the points in the picture, you are oly looking for a few key ones.

So then make sure you pick the right key points?

For example, a broken pickaxe vs a normal pickaxe. For broken pickaxe, make sure you make one of the subpoints where the head is bent, and then for the normal one, make the point where the head is bent on the broken pickaxe but is normal on the normal pick.

Another example: Mith Pickaxe vs Steel Pickaxe, make a subpoint for each where the head color is seen.

I see where you are coming from, but I think it's possible to find these differences between items and use them in DTM's. (I can try if you'd like)

heh I don't think u need to tell Yohojo how to make a DTM :P but I have also had the same problem of it picking up other items no matter what points I used. So I try to use them as much as possible but bmp's are fine too

Yeah, you would have to be VERY crefull what points you choose. and it would be risky, and really hard to test too.

It would take a ton of time to do to, and if you are willing to, that is mighty nice of you, but i wouldnt waste your time untill you know it wont go to waste.

Im no dev, and im no yohojo :P ,lol. so i can only guese why they choose bitmaps instead.

heh, never had problem with that because I usually cover the item in the points :D

well, the thing is, the more points you have, the less beinifical it is to have a dtm. And eventually it get s to the points, where if you want and acceptable anmount of distinquishable reliability, you should just use a bitmap, which wuld be faster (than a dtm covering all the points)

Heh, yeah, I got confused at first too because of the avatar. When I saw QUOTE=lordgreggreg I was a little confused :).

Alright, I think I may convert all the bmps to DTMs and post them… I have some spare time. If the devs feel like using them, they can :).

I also have a couple questions:

1) When using FindBitmapToleranceIn(), with say, for example, Ore Bitmaps. What should I set the tolerance to in order to always find the right one?

2) When I will be making the DTMs, what should I use as tolerance for important colored points. For example one of the colored points of copper ore, or another example the pick head color.

DTMs are faster but can math with other items…. bitmaps may take longer but are a whole lot more acc.

and SRL is not looking for speed over quality… even if they make a dtm if one does accident match another item its just not worth it… may get an acct banned….

what else more is there to discuss… bitmaps are more acc than DTMs but DTMs are fast and now with DDTMs are easier to use….

Really if you want to talk all the time to make sure that all the DTM's will only find the DTM that they're made of it would be awesome because then it would be faster and for efficient *assuming they don't miss * but it all depends on if they are made well. If you want to do it go ahead but I don't feel that everyone would want to re-do what the Dev's have done.

and something tells me that after about 10 points in a dtm or so (mabey 20) that bitmaps might even be faster and more efficant

lol if you put over 10 points on a DTm the chances of you finding the Item is actully slimmer XD.

and yes with a DTm over 15 points will result in being as fast or even slower than a bitmap…

(at that try adding tol and area to the DTM it lags badly… (from what i remember idk about Scar 3.10…))

i use DTMs for MM stuff and bitmaps for items…

sometimes i use DTMs for items when i know i will not get another item by accident.

IMO, Dtm's, used correctly, own Bitmaps.

Smaller, more reliable (if made correctly) and faster to use.

Wait… DTM's of other items will not match a different items if your smart…

So were not smart apperantly? Why don't we just do what fizzi said before. make sure one of the points is a special point.

Just having one special point wont be good enough.

This is beyond an issue of being smart, the sheer number or items makes it impractical to make DTMthat you can be sure wnt match another. Not to mention that you have to leave some tolerance, and that you also have to account for new items as well.

They woudl be a pain to update, because to change one, you have to make sure it doenst confilct with hundreds of others.

To even get it down to unique dtms you will also have to add more and more points, and very quickly, it will be SLOWER to use dtms.

So iuntead of going slower, being a pain to update, a pain to make, etc, we stick with bitmaps, which are gaurnteed to find thier item, and only their item, and when they change, we only have to worry about one bitmap.

For items, BlackLists will pwn all, just wait.

I think DTMs are better. Bitmaps never worked out great for me… :(

lol you guys the dif between each one is load time and acc…

Bitmaps of items will always be more acc than dtms of items(just because a dtm may find another item)…

DTMs of the MM will be more acc than bitmaps…

bitmaps (unless made extremly small) will always have more load time…

DTMs and DDTMs are a extremly more flexible then a bitmap…

they are just as fast, bitmaps just usually use more points then dtms(speed per point is the same)

no, i complelty disagree. bitmaps point wize are MUCH faster.

dtms are nroamly faster becuase they can use 4 points, instead of 50.

I think bitmaps use single pixels in relation to each other, while dtms use pixels in relation to a given point. So for this reason bitmaps are always going to be more accurate because they have more reference points. Not sure though so correct me if im wrong.
