Edit2: Aded some verbage

Welcome to Greg's SVN Tutorial

Subversion is an advanced versioning system that helps developers organise their code and their revisions. You probably don't care, and just want to get the newest version of SRL. I have found that the most simple way to use and checkout (download) stuff from a SVN (subversion) repository (where the developers keep everything) is to use a program called "TortiseSVN"

We will cover
  1. How to download Tortoise SNV
  2. How to Install Tortoise SNV
  3. How to use Tortoise SNV to get SRL
1. How to Download Tortoise SNV
First off, you need to go to http://tortoisesvn.net/downloads to download TortoiseSVN.

Click on that link, and then click on the version of Tortoise you need. If you don't know, get the newest 32 bit edition. I have marked it in the picture below to help you out.

This will open up a window prompt to save the installation file. Save it to your desktop, or some other easy to access area. If you missed the download window, try refreshing the page.

The picture below shows what It will look like in firefox

2. Installing Tortoise SVN

Ok, now that you have the installer downloaded, you need to run it. Double click on the installation file to start. (the installation file will be in the directory you choose to download it too, If you can't find it, try downloading it again, making sure to pay attention to where you save it)

After you have double clicked, be patent. The installer can take anywhere up to a minute to display the screen below. Once it does, proceed through the installer as you normally would. Accept the license agreement, and leave all other settings as default.

At the end of the installation it will prompt your to restart your computer. This is NOT optional. Tortoise needs to edit windows files, and it can not be installed properly unless you restart your computer. Do NOT ignore this step.

3. Using Tortoise SVN to download SRL!

You need to navigate to the includes folder of Scar. For most people, it will be something like mine. "C:\Program Files\Scar 3.XX\includes\"
Once you are inside that folder, locate your "SRL" Folder.

If you do not have a srl folder, that is fine, just create one.

Then right click on it, and choose to SVN Checkout.

Now, you will need to know the URL of the Subversion Repository. I don't know what it is, and you are screwed until someone fills me in, and even more screwed until it is created.

Take this link
http://srl-forums.com/something
And paste it into the box labeled "URL of repository"

You can also choose a different version of SRL (if the script requires) or just choose "head" for the newest.

Click Ok when you are ready.

Let me know of any ideas you have, or ways I can make it more clear to even the noobiest of noobs.

Procede

Also, you might want to put 'THIS IS NOT OUT YET' or something in BIG BIG letters at the top of the page

Thanks for catching that for me. Right now this is in a members only test area, so as not to confuse anyone yet.

I am just trying to get some feed back, etc.

If i didn't already know how to use SVN I'd probably know now, this should help keep the noobs away :D

Thank you very much, and yeah, i hope so.

Or at least give us a place to funnel them to, so they can ask thjeir qwestiosn in a tut area instead of all over the forum.

Shoudl I expand it later to inlcude the part where they have to run "setupsrl.scar" ?

Yeah, im not exatly sure how the admins want to incorperate this.

I was thinkng of just dropping it into the "hwo to auto" portion of "tutorial island"

but whatever is fine with me.

[oftopic] and thakns on the red compliment :) The screen shots are of vista (tortoise is obly windows based)

but i do have unbuntu/kubuntu on my desktop, with beryl, and you can imagin how much red it has :) its wonderfull[/oftopic]

Ubuntu is not a theme, it is an entire opoerating system. it replaces windows.

you can download it free just by googling it.

Lets get back on topic, what do i need to add to this?

[offtopic]
Linux owns Windows
Beryl owns Aero
Free owns Paid
[/offtopic]

Step 1: Download Markus' auto SRL Updater (will release/create it once I know the SVN url)
Step 2: Configure it the first time you use it, so it knows which folder it needs to save stuff to
Step 3: Run it each time you want to update SRL, it'll automatically do everything for you, you only need to press da freakin button

Cool, however, that sounds like a tutorial youll have to make yourself mate.

Im not guna do your advertising for ya.

Besides, I like this method better, toritise is good to have installed for many other reasons, not to mention that it will give you more control, and posibilites to have diferent follders for diferent versions
{.include SRL381/srl.scar}

Good luck making ure thing though.

Well, I DO like it, just forgot to said :duh: Pretty detailed with nice pics
But I don't think this helps against those über n00bs/leechers, even if you give 'em a download button, they can't click it :(

Lol, yep, them uber noob leechers are something to be a feered of.

I tried to make it easy for them to, i told them to download it, i gave them the link, and i even gave them three pictures on where it is, lol.

But yeah, i supose if they cant hit the dl button, even ure prgram wont be able to help them

solution? Noob points :p

Thanks for the reply, let me know if you have any idea how i can tailor this more towards the super noobs.

Markus

Ok, über n00bs don't have antivirus craps and don't read those big red letters this is a trojan.
Just create a topic called item duper. They don't see the trojan warning, only the attachment Ultima GP Duper Phat Creator 1.2 Pro working Cr4cked wit Stat Changer.exe, they'll open it and they get a video tut explaining howto do it, if they don't do it correctly they get a electric shock trough the keyboard and mouse. Then they can do it again once, if they screw the bios will be erased, and the cpu will burn.

Thank you thank you :) I may have to change what folder you checkout to.. not sure if it is going to be the srl one , or the includes one.

I think it is going to be the includes on now…

Is the SNVed SRL the constantly edited and rarely working dev version of srl?
Or is it friendly?

passiondrive

2007-08-07 15:20:30

My guess would be, if its open to the public it's gonna be pretty friendly.

oh, it doesnt exist yet. Fawki said that instewad of making new realsaes of srl, he is going to use svn instead.

That way it can be updated faster and easier to get.

He sias he will host it on srl, and that it will come out with version 4.

once it does, i will post this tutorial on the actual tut island.
