Concept:


SRL forums have always been a great place for anyone from talented scripters, to young leechers just trying to get ahead in runescape. Unfortunately, there is an inherit unbalance in the system which results in too many ignorant questions, and not enough time to give specific, helpful answers.


The solution of course, came in the form of stickies, faqs, manuals, and other resources to answer any question that could be asked. Unfortunately, this is only effective if it is read, and far too often it is ignored, forcing annoying, repetitive, and frustrating question to be asked time and time again, when a simple search could have resolved the issue. Other noobish activities such as double posting, posting in the wrong forum, etc, are generally harmful to the organization and effectiveness of a forum.


Now, although these offences are against forum rules in most cases, it is normally considered too harsh, and unreasonable to issue out an administrative punishment, not to mention completely infeasible to the admins to possibly condemn the hundreds of noobs the forum is hit by each week.


It has been generaly understood that an effective way to put a stop to repeat offenders is by humiliating them, causing them to feel guilty and stupid, and thus forcing them to do their homework, read the rules, etc. Some forums use a reputation system to discourage noobs, but this is also a bit too harsh as any black mark would stay with you forever. (Not to mention that SRL has the rep system disabled for good reasons). Forum posts directed at humiliating noobs are also often misinterpreted as a flame, and can lead to ever more destructive posts.


My Solution is a system, where multiple respected, polite, and active members can professionally report noob activities. They are stored and added to a database that dynamically makes a signature seen around the forum, humiliating the noob. Noob points are assigned and displayed in the sig, but will not be visible after a few days, once other noobs take its place (only the most recent noobs are shown)

Implementation:



This web site has been created in order to professionally and consistently issue out fair punishment and humiliation to each and every noob based upon their action. Noob points can be assigned to a particular forum member, and if desired, generated BB code can be posted in their thread to alert them.


Noob points are directly related to their offence, in order to assure fairness. They accumulate if more than one offence is given, and their total is stored.


A generated signature is automatically updated to show the past five noobs, their most recent offence, and their total noob points. They will stay in the signature until five more noobs commit an offence. This system dynamically adjusts the level of humiliation based on the number of noobs, the more noobs there are, the harsher it will be, in order to (hopefully) eradicate this sort of activity.


Because I believe that everyone was a noob once, these noob points will slowly decrease over time, and eventually their record will be clean again.


Members will be handpicked, mainly based on their politeness and helpfulness (In order to make sure this system is not used to flame anyone). This system is designed to be used by the noob lovers, not the noob haters, in order to help and motivate them to correct their actions.

First off, add this to your signature! We have a variety of themes for you to choose from, and even make custom ones if you so desire. Adding this to your signature is critical to the success of this system.

Now, unfortunately, I cannot grant administrative privileges to all members, can't have the clowns running the circus ya know? What you can do is send me (lordgreggreg) a PM to report a noob, (please provide a link), or to request administrative access.

If you are really adamant about gaining admin privileges here, try to be as helpful as possible, be very polite to any noobs, and send in lots of good reports.

I have just made it possible to report noobs without a password!Please include a link to the offence, a admin will verify and make it official. (unoffical reports will not count towards noob points, or apear in the signature.

You can also use this site to view and search through noob reports.

Administrative Members



You will be giving a password specific to your user, do NOT give anyone this password. If you feel like someone has your password, please pm me, and we will get it resolved.


To report a noob, please go to The Admin Site and fill out the form, make sure that the username is exact! It is best to copy and paste their name for consistency sake.


You may report the same noob for multiple offences, please do the most serious offence last (it will be the one to appear in the signature)


You may copy the BB code generated if you wish, but do NOT flame the noob. Be as helpful and considerate as possible, most of the noobs are young, and don't have a high self esteem. If you sense this, be sure to let them know that this is in no way permanent.


You may also, in your free time, review unoffical reports, then edit them to make them offical, or delete them if they aren't good enough.

Noobs



If you are reported, than you probably deserved it. If you feel that you have been reported unjustly, or in error, or if you feel that you have been flamed by who reported you, please PM me immediately and we will get this resolved.


You may use This to view what you have been reported for. Please, read the rules and don't be lazy in order to prevent this from happening again.


You may rest assured that your noob points will vanish quickly so long as you do not commit another noob offence (else they will come back in full).


This is NOT tied to your forum reputation, that system is disabled, and all is not lost if you are reported for being a noob. This is a minor offence, only ment to humiliate you for a limited time in order to encourage better behavior.

This database needs to be taken seriously in order for it to be effective.

@Ram, yes, i completly agree, and well said. This system should be taken seriously enough so where it has meaning, but not serisouly enoough to where it hurts people. This is only a temporary little thing to shove you into a signature for a few days. And yes, NO ONE is exempt from being a noob. I still do it sometimes when i skim over posts to fast.

@alach11 Thank you. I think it does for multiple reasons, like the unpermanent effect and admin level of it.

@Covert and @exppo I'm sorry that you do not care enough to read this. I think it is worth the time, as I have spent much more writing it. If you get more free time, please, look it over.

actaully nitro, for some reason scar didnt work correclty with php cords… mabey it was jsut me

anyhow, you signature was small, it was REALLY hard to get everything to fit in correctly. Took me a long time

I apreciate the complements, its my second php thingy i have made, and it has taken me hours and hours!!! lol, but i think its worth it. Learned alot.

I do hope it cuts down on noobs at least a little. Hoestly, some just don't even care when people tell them to search, hopefully this will add on a bit more of a kick to it, without making it too.. destructive (flaming, permanent rep, etc)

Well I have lots of spare time on my hands so I can make V2 if you like =] Bigger, more graphics. That is only if you want to put all the coordinates in again :)

What would be your preferred width and height? And what other specifications would you like, such as fonts. Also do you want just one theme or color or lots of themes and colors like I did last time.

as far as fonts.. just regualr pixel fonts is good, because that is what I will be using in php.

what sig idea you thinking about working on?

Well.. I did a main sig again, Thought I'd give you a bit more space, if your up for putting in some coordinates lol. Is it possible to use another font as well? Because blocky and smooth don't really mix ;)

I thought maybe do it in theme with the seasons this time so it gives you less work to do as we dont have so many versions like last time and it will be fun seeing what I can produce every new season hehe, so I have made a few summer ones for this season =]




Then I made a Noob point that should go in well with the new season themes, if you so wish to use it =]



And right now, I am working on the small signatures for the summer =]

Hope the main ones are ok. If not just throw some ideas my way :)

You new signatures were still to small (length is what matters at the moment)

So i sized them down.

also, it is a real PAIN to redo cordinant systems, so i changed them to fit the one I already had.

I like the small ones..bbut i might have you edit them to fit my cords, instead of me fit yours (trust me, its easier that way)

Thanks for putting it into your signature. And yes, i know, I do backup daily. Just not hourly (like i supose I should have)

And yesterday, was a day i choose to spend LOTS of time on it.

BY the Way, ANYONE can make a signature, just make sure it is set up correctly. If you can get my php text to line up on your signature (background) it only takes me abbout 5 mnutes to do the rest.

I completely agree here. Most of the time when somone gets a noob point they just skip right over it. It would be much more beneficial and MATURE for our community to be helpful and explain what a person did wrong. Instead I see SRL members issuing noob points like there is no tomorrow. In fact, if you are giving away noob points you are pretty much flaming people (outside of the flame forum) therefore you yourself should receive a few. There is absolutely nothing constructive coming out of this system. I think it is just a bunch of 14 year olds trying to assert their "power" over others. And like Secet said, everyone makes mistakes. This does not become a problem until they make many mistakes and don't change.

look, i have been in ALL of my signatures, ALL accros thjis forum saying that I am a noob, at least.. what? three tiems now?

i have ever reported myself for making an oftopic post on accadent.

i feel that this siystem works bettter, a proivate mesage may not be read, not to mention it is harder, and if it is read, thats just one person saying they dont like that.


this gives solid links in the report, this actualy humiliates them, and makes them feel bad for a bit.

meh getting noobpoints doesnt really do anything, its just like getting told not to do it again, and its also makes sure everyone know what you did and its a reminder to you too.
I dont think you can get banned by getting noobpoints tho you can get banned if someone doesnt like one of your post so just live with the noob points. Besides their down right now.

Ok, well I understand you have put a lot of work into this but the system has many flaws yet.

-First, the system is completely biased. I find that regular users receive much more noob points for a mistake than do SRL Members. For example, I have seen a few pointless posts by you in this thread (I think I saw a double post…maybe) and also a post in all caps. However, you have yet to receive any points for any of these offenses. Another great example of this bias is here. Sky would have never received the points if he hadn't asked for them. And yet another example is here where Smartkidz makes an entirely useless post, however, it is overlooked and only IngaNarf is reported. One more example here where the SRL Member/Noob Point user posts "Give it 2 asprins and call me in the morning." while the non-SRL Member posts something more sensible, "Oh yeah, try buying a ram chip. If you are using up too much ram… this is the answer. " Ill let you guess who got reported. You should be able to figure it out by now. In fact, I'll be surprised if I don't receive noob points for just posting against it.

Example 4- Umm no, he couldn't have possibly found that by searching. Another one that should be revoked.
There are probably more however I just needed a few to prove how irresponsible your users are being with this system. After all, this is the last day of summer so I'm going to kind of speed this up a little so I can go have fun before school starts :( .

relax bro, look, i know it is biased, robot are not adminitering points, therfore, by default it will be biased. Now, skys noob points were taken away. And more reports happen against non members because they plain out, act more nooby, and im my opionon, act nobbier than members.

now sure, members deserve noob points to, but really the main noob point is "not searching" that is where we can do the most good, and that is really where i focus my efforts.

i aprecite you speeding up ,a dn for pointing out thoes posts. yes, i know that some poeple report noobs when it freally isnt a good time too, im wokring on that, really i am, this system is very new, and i dont know who is a good reporeter, and who is not.

this shystem is set up so where any noob can pm me, saying they have been reported wrongly, and i will fix it.

hopefully bad reports will stop hapeneing, dont worry.

well, look,, noob paint are going to be spam if the reporter does not leave soemthing critically helpful along with it. all admins have been instructed that if they cannot help the noob, then they will not be alowed to leave a report against them. I am still weeding out the bad admins.

Just because a few (even a majority) abuse a system doesn't mean that it's bad.

Take bittorrent for example. It has completely legitimate uses. But since so many people use it for illegal activities, it is often looked upon it in a bad sense. Companies try to get bittorrent development stopped, but bittorrent is not the offender, the people uploading and seeding illegal material are the offenders.

Ehh, I don't even know why I posted that one. That one isn't really a big deal to me. Quite frankly he deserved what he got. He lied and then he failed to read the scrolling text at the top of the forums. The main point of that one was that it created all of those spam posts. But I guess that can't be helped because he was the one doing it. Anyway, my main concern is about the points that are given that aren't quite fair. Which I guess the pruning should help alot on this.

Agree here too. Most of the problems I listed can be fixed with better admins (especially the bias one I was talking about above). Whenever you guys get it worked out, I think it will be a helpful thing for the SRL community.

Phew…just got done reading through the heated debates of Opal Tasty and Lordgreggreg. I, for one, agree with the noob point system, so it has my full support. Also, excellent job lordgreggreg!! :) As you can now see, I've got the 'recent noobs' in my sig :p!
