Lol my internet is too goddamn slow, but if you want to know one more speed test site, http://speedtest.net/ Its pretty cool.

@pennti that one looks realy cool. and it look like it has a bit more accurate because you can say with serv you wanna use.

Omg very nice, my internet speed can go up to 24000 but you need to live right next to the tower. :(

I suppose so, but I really don't know why a university would have higher uploads that others…

Anyway, I'm wireless, so the rest of my state with Comcast gets ~10k Download.

I actually used to! I would now, its jsut that my school has a fancy authentication thingy that prevents me from having two computers connected at the same time. And I really need this one (laptop) for school alot.

I hate my ISP.

I hate my broadband Verizon. Internet page downloads aren't that slow… it's just downloading and uploading which are a pain.

EDIT:Just realized this was for NC - I live in DC. The downloading and uploading speeds are about the same, though, so it makes no difference.

University's internet

Under windows 7 you can change some tuning parameters. Sometimes this provides much better performance. If you do this, be careful. Note the values before you start in case you need to revert. It's also a good idea to change one thing at a time so if it gets worse you know which parameter caused you problems.

I have to make these changes on some file servers and machines that use iSCSI disk drives to get proper performance on them.

Open a cmd window with right click -> run as administrator

This command displays the current values:
netsh int tcp show global

These commands shut off various tuning:
netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global chimney=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
netsh int tcp set global congestionprovider=none

Gamers often find better ping time and game performance if they disable the Nagle algorithm. Normally your computer will wait some time after getting a packet before sending the acknowledgment in case more packets come in and it can save on network traffic. Disabling this makes your computer send the acks right away.

Run "ipconfig" from a cmd window to find your IP address. Run regedit. Click "computer", then file->export to save a backup in case you mess up.

In regedit and find this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces

Under that there will be several long hex strings depending on how many network adapters you have. Click on each of these and find the one with your IP address.

Right click in the right hand pane and choose new->dword. Name it TcpAckFrequency. Double click it and change the value to 1.

Do the same thing to create another key, TcpNoDelay and also set that to 1.

Reboot.
