People are forgiving here at these forums. You can make mistakes. Even stupid ones, once in a while, provided you're already established as not-stupid-at-least-not-most-of-the-time, or not new. But forums aren't a chat, nor a discussion board, not even an online convention. Which means that many things don't carry across screens which normally do in conversation, things such as sarcasm, humor, flirting, what have you.
Thus, I am proposing a general set of guidelines for which people to post by.
1. Don't be too wordy, like I am. Though you and I wish that everyone speaks near perfect fluent English, the sad truth is that they don't. And don't hold anything against them for it, it's not their fault that they weren't born in a English-as-a-native-language country (It's really not a fault either).
*2. Don't flame, but if you do, do it intelligently and subtly (unlike a real flame). Make it a funny one, if you can, because it's better to make a laughingstock of both of you, (or the other guy), than have it turn into a battle of "who can keep the CAPS-LOCK button on the longest. Then you're both banned, and people are laughing at you, but you aren't.
3. Use the quote button to show exactly WHO and WHAT you are responding to. We don't want people accidentally responding "LOL I KILLED HIM" to a serious post stating that "My grandpa died today of cancer". Multi-quote if you need to.
4. EDIT. I see people emphasizing this everywhere, and maybe we should make the "Edit" button a 1000*200 button. Sometimes, you'll feel the need to double-post, but it should be a rare occurence, and should have a real reason.
5. Even if double-posts might have a reason, quadruple posts usually never do, unless it's a mod only thread, and he's bumping it to show updates. So wait for someone to respond, or use "Edit".
6. Do your research before you post. There are various examples scattered around these here forums, and I won't name anyone, but there are people that say that Darwin created the Big Bang theory. So please, use Google or common sense. Wikipedia is good sometimes.
7. Read the post you are responding to, and try if it's illegible. Even if it's a wall of text, read it to make your response on-topic and intelligent.
*8. Smileys. Don't use em. If you must, constrain yourself to one per paragraph. Even then, it's too much. Smileys don't do too much to add to the content of the post. (According to bullzeye95, people might not agree with this rule, so leniency is expected.)
9. If your post is long, make it into paragraphs, so there's some organisation. Then people can respond to sections of your post, and everyone will know what everyone is saying.
10. I know that meat companies make lots of money off SPAM, but there's no reason you should help them along. They make enough money as it is.
*Due to popular response, these "commandments" can be broken as common sense warrants. Like religious laws, you know?
I'll add more as it's needed.
