Make Leechers More Dangerous?
I realize that many members of the community are generous here, and are willing to share outstanding scripts with the rest of the community, yet I also feel that there is strong anti-sentiment towards leechers that will take take take, give none, and threaten the rest of the SRL community by doing so.
Thus, if there is a piece of advice I would like to give, I feel apprehensive in giving it, especially if it involves making more accounts in a MUCH shorter amount of time, training them faster.
What should I do about this? It's also basic networking advice, and though I see many people with advanced coding skills, I see almost no networking skills being passed around, while this would greatly enhance the experience.
I also realize I may be a leecher in some people's eyes, being a one-poster, but I am smart enough to learn, and I will, but I'd like to share my advice too.
If you have any general computer questions, torrenting, etc. feel free to ask here, or anywhere.
I would also like a response to my above concern. Thank you.

Hey :) Welcome to SRL Forums!
You won't be called a leecher if you have a post count 50+ and you are active here almost every day (like me!)
So I hope you enjoy this community, and you enjoy learning SCAR!

Test scripts, post progress reports, be active and people don't call you a leacher. Testers are always needed, especially for scripts without 20+ pages.
Once you've tested many scripts and you know the community you might start learning scar and try some scripting yourself.
It's fun once you get the hang of it.

i understand and agree with your point of view in a mere one aspect everyone is smart enough to become a SRL member its just a matter of how much effort you put into it :D
Well, my concern is not with being a SRL member, as that is no major milestone (at least in my eyes), nor with being called a leecher, but with what to do with them. I can also help code anti-low level scripts, but feel that it's not the way to go.

What about locking registration periodically? That will prevent random noobs from coming and taking scripts

Well, I would like it, but it's doing things that matter, not the status.

Well, the point is that I could give it here, as it is faster than proxies, but (easier to do = more noobs on the street).

That would be nice, but we'd have to prune inactives and other known leechers. Then not only just lock, but to have access to scripts at all, you'd have to be a member for more than x days y posts etc. Or you could make it invite only, but I never did like that concept.
Another new concept that would require scripting is to have an "acceptance system" in which new people would have to go through interaction with another member to gain access to certain parts of the website. That would significantly reduce the number of idiots.
Also, recognizing the hate towards RS Demon in lots of people here, to effectively counter it needs a plan, and while sig-proliferation works, there can be a net of greater extent with organization. There are some scripts around that do that, but we can probably go beyond scripts. Not sure how yet, but I'll be thinking.

Here, I suggest you PM our Admins with your ideas
Which ones should I PM? Or more practically, which ones will listen to me and not be annoyed?

Let me see if I got this down: You want to help cut down on leechers?
Perhaps it could just become practice to leave a few minor errors in your script, when you release it to non-member? That way, an average scripter could still run the script, but a leecher wouldn't know what he was doing.
Yes, I guess that would work. Non-optimization and confusing code would work, true. And cutting people off would lead people to other venues, such as RS Demon. Let me reorganize my thoughts, then I'll post here again.

Let them use RSDemon. I personally couldn't care less. RSDemon is not being sold anymore though…
Well, it seems as if people hate it here.

hmmm u could try making ur script not very user friendly, by adding a few consts and stuff like boolean:=True if u want the script to run end else terminatescript and make a little note on the thread saying u have to make it true if u want the script to run. ok thats a really bad example but something like that :D
Yes, I could do that to the script, but I'm thinking more of site-wise, what I could do.

Pentti made an auth system in PHP maybe have a chat with him about it

It was a PHP Auth? I thought all it did was he'd be able to see all the Ip's and ban whichever he wanted from using the script…

…….could u then not allow people with less than X posts to not be aloud to use it?

If you seem to know what you're talking about, which it obviously seems you do, none of the admins will be annoyed with you for PMing them. If you don't want leechers to use your script, gain membership with it first, and release it to just members.
You seem to really know what you want to do though. I have a feeling you'll make a major impact here. Welcome.
I like being wordy online too :p
Ok, I have PMed the most active three of the six admins, and have elaborated a bit on the PMs. Will wait and see what will happen next.

i don't think there could ever be a way to stop leechers?

No, you're right, but there are MANY ways to annoy them to death. And if they can work their way in, then I appreciate the fact that they actually had to do something to BE a leecher. Which is contradictory, but does what I want.
In any case, there's no way to completely eliminate them; it's like trying to kill a full grown colony of rabbits with a pistol, but we can cut down on them.
It's worth the effort.
I have also forwarded my PM to Dankness. Now just to wait and see.

What makes you so sure I know my stoofs? What if I don't? I might though, and thanks for the encouragement.
I haven't received a reply though. Either my idea has been tossed away, ignored, or is in serious discussion.
A lot of my concerns have been answered by Boreas, though none of them were mentioned in this thread. I would like to be at least heard and responded to. But the admins are busy people.
