Falador All Bar Smelter
Deadline: 8th July 2007 12.00 Midnight GMT

(Just the smelter, no extra stuff like mining, smithing etc.)

I have decided to start a scripting competition. Haven't decided if this will be a one off, or a weekly / monthly thing, but it seems like fun :) I will be the judge of the competition

Anyone is welcome to join the competition, the rules are simple:



Rules

• You must work on your own
• However much you have completed must be handed in by the time limit. Even if you don't complete the script fully, you still have a (small) chance of winning :)
• You must use the SRL include
• You must make all of your own custom functions. You cannot take them from any other script even if you have permission. This means that the only procedures / functions you may use are the ones already in the SRL include, or ones that you make yourself
• No KYAB (For this one at least)
• Once you have submitted a script, you cannot submit another one / edit your current one, so make sure you check it over thoroughly before submitting your entry

I may add / change the rules at any time, and i will warn you when i do. They won't be big changes though


Script will be judged on:
Runtime, Script code, Quality, Techniques used, efficiency and use of SRL.

Good Scripts will contain the following:

• Have good scripting standards
• Utilize multiplayer support well
• Follow all SRL rules: i.e break out of potential infinite loops etc.
• Use interesting and unique techniques in your script
• Interesting Antiban Techniques - Random pathings, random actions etc. Generally making it look like its an actual person controlling the character
• Create a good quality working script!

Added extras will earn you extra points! I.E World switching, fancy reports, Cannonball smelting, Amulets etc.


Prize
The prize will be respect and reputation of the community :) I will also be donating 1-2 mill GP to the winner if what they are looking for is RS money

Submitting your entry
Once you have finished your script, email or PM it to me so that others won't see your finished product until the end of the competition, and they can't steal your ideas! All scripts will then be posted up after the competition has ended.

Why should I enter?
Hopefully this will get you slightly motivated to create the best script you can, regardless of your standard. The more scripts you create the better you become: "Practice makes perfect". On top of that, when everyone has released their own versions of the script, you can compare yours to theirs and see what techniques they have used in their script: what works and what you can improve on. This will really help you improve your scripting skills.

As a bonus
I have also decided that I will be reviewing all entries and commenting on each script; what could be improved, and what I like. That way, everyone who enters can get (valuable? :p ) feedback and hopefully can improve their scripting skills :). If other devs want to help out, I would be appreciative of that.

Hopefully there will be a next one. I thought this would be a good way to get the community more active in making scripts. Research shows people tend to perform best when in a competition. However there is no prize yet :(

No SRL Snippets, or anything from the Test corner. The only Procedures / functions you can use are the ones already in the SRL include, or your own which yo have created by yourself.

Antirandoms are already in the SRL include, so you can use those. You have to make a new one if you have already made one, since it's the fairest way to go.

Did you create DNASmither? If not, then you are not allowed to use any procedures / functions made by the original author.

I thought it would be a nice script to start with. Not too tough IMO. As we progress through scripting competitions, the scripts will become harder.

Detect which bank you are in and walk to the smelting place from there. Then walk to a random bank and repeat…

EDIT: This needs to be stickyfied. What do you no, gutter started the <insert number of scripting competitions + 1> scripting competition at SRL.
EDIT2: I got a good prize. The winner gets 1k iron + 2k coal (or 1k copper + 1k tin), and they have to smelt it using there script. But i don't have much money on rs. Maybe you can donate some money from your essence miner profits(if you want) or someone else can donate money/ores. Idk, just thinking of prizes so theres more then 3-4 people taking part of this competition. :)

Nice idea star. Hopefully by next competition starts ill have some mills racked up that i can also give to winner. Srl needs this to (nicely) force people to script. Always good when you have a driving force of pride of winning behind you.

Make the scripts as interesting as possible! The more in it, the better the script and the more you advance on your techniques (and the more chance of winning the competition)

If you wrote them, go ahead. Make sure they fit to the rules though.



I've just remembered to say. When you finish your script, email or PM it to me, so that other won't be able to see your script until the very end of the competition. That way no ideas, will be stolen. At the end of the competition, ill post all entrants into one post and comment on each of them :)

If it does, this means your pretty much saying that anything you would give credit for in a regular script is not allowed? Just want to clarify that.

If anyone has any .BMP's of the higher leveled bars (Addy +) can they post them here if it's ok with Star?

Yes, that means no FindFastRandoms, or Blacklists. If you want to use them, you have to build your own, in your own way.

Maybe, pay an enter price. So then the jackpot could become really high(!). Or give the player who wins this competition SRL member, a cup or a purple name colour^^. Also there should be something like: Longest report, Best anti-randoms, Random bar smelting, Most bars and Least false players? Just some ideas.

and this smelter will be 10X better than that 1 (the smelting part on that other one wasnt very hard).

Question to anyone who's made one of these before: how hard is furnace detection? I can't seem to come up with any good, reliable ideas to find it…

do we have to include blurite? i didnt think of it as a real bar. And there are qite a few ways to detect the furnace(FindObj is simple and probably works, but that wasnt considered help because you're so smart that you already thought of it :p

Nah, I can't make it, your in luck :) I thought I'd be able to finish it before I left for vacation, but i just found out im leaving a bit sooner then i thought :(

And why would you want to smith blurite, 100 blurite swords for pking, ehh? Jk, but i think members can make stuff out of blurite, if it will help your chances, i would add it :)

You may want to check that picture of the ores and bars. It doesn't seem to work correctly for me.

I saved this in Photoshop as a 32 bit BMP, so it should be exactly right. I just don't have a blurite bar, since all my accounts are non-member. Also, I had to save it as a zip file because the BMP is too large for that filetype on this forum.

You need to mine blurite to finish The Knights Sword..so it doesn't matter if you're a member or not ;)

I have the Blurite ore, but it won't allow me to smelt it into a bar unless I'm on a members server.

I don't think working in both banks is required, just a bonus..;) Also, I'm pretty sure blurite isn't required, I've never heard of someone who smelts blurite in bunches.

The first 4 are Musts

SRL 3.8 and SCAR 3.06 is recommended since they are the updated version of each, however, I won't penalize you if you use a different version of either

Last 2 basically add onto your score. A complete script will gain 5 extra points (for example) each bar type you add will = 5 extra points etc.

So if I add blurite and elemental smithing, I'll have a better chance?

Personally, it would motivate me more if higher talented scripts entered. If Fakawi and Wizz entered, it would be more of a challenge. I would try harder to win, because if I did, people would respect my scripting talents more. Just think, if a non-member beat a Dev, how much confidence would that give other users? Including the SRL members.

Although nielsie had a good idea with the group thing, it's Starblasters choice.

Well yea but think about it.
A lot of these scripters are pretty new, they think they they have ABSOLUTELY no chance against higher ranked people. I think the point of these competitions is to motivate more people to script. Im still gonna give a whack at it, but some of the less experienced SRL members might just give up after seeing these higher people entered. Not everyone is as self confident as you :p. But yea i see your argument.

I don't expect to be in the top 5, based on how crappy my script is so far, but who knows? Maybe it will all come together by the time the contest ends.

I certainly don't think the contest is hopeless for other people just because a few Devs are participating.

Devs don't really have anything to prove, but a lot of other people can use this as an opportunity to really demonstrate their scripting talents.

Given the relatively short time-frame, I think the winner will be the person that spends the most time working on it and tweaking it, not someone with 'leet skillz' that spends an afternoon throwing something together.

i don't think i'm going to participate this competition, maybe next one? cause i think it's to late for me to begin making one.. what do you guys think? isn't it too late to begin with it now? :p

i dont think RGB is the way to go… you should do HSL or XYZ..

or you could be like me and use LAB and HSV ;) but i use all of them depeding on the color really :)

I haven't split it up for a few reasons.

1) It's a proven fact that when people who you know are better that you are against you, you up your own standards. Thats how it works in sport, academics, and so I am applying it to scripting. I know personally when I'm playing a crap person at a sport, I don't put as much effort in as I usually do when I play someone who is better than me

2) Not all devs are amazing at making scripts, a lot of them became devs for writing lots of useful functions, so I don't think anyone has a significant advantage / disadvantage

3) Some members (non devs) have already submitted their scripts, and they are looking very very good. I'm impressed already

4) It's not only the functionality of the script that counts, but the methods you use, the creativity you have etc. Its a point system based on many different things, not just if it works or not :)

well since the competition is over, i can tell everyone:

mine will(hopefully :p )detect if it's at lumby, al-karid, and fally bank.if it doesnt recognize where it is(ie. not in fallly,lumby, or al-karid bank) then it will home tele and smelt in lumby

im definately adding a responder if there's someone inside the smelter place (when im smelting), making silver stuff, and gold stuff(possibly with gems in them)

It will take me a long time to judge the scripts, since there are quite a few last minute entries, and they are all quite big. I'm also judging them on a lot more than just how well they work, so yea…

I have a great idea for the next competition. It will start as soon as I release the results of this one. So far, there is no set date. Sumilion will also be helping me judge this one (If not more, thats up to him)

Well I have some problems here (not with the scripts) which i shall mention:

• Non members have entered the conpetition, so it would be unfair if we didn't release all of the script to all non members in the end. However, as pyro said, Fally smelters would be utterly raped if we did…
• The point of the scripting competitions are for everyone to learn off of everyone else, so restricting them from non members, means they cannot learn and will always be "Leechers." However, most non members do leech anyway, so restricting them from the scripts may be a good thing (?). For the small minority of them who do want to learn though, they wouldn't be able to look at these awesome scripts.
• My time is very limited since i have a full time job now, so it will take quite a while to mark all of the scripts. I want to go into as much detail as possible and they are all quite big, some with complex methods in them

Other things:

• The next competition is a confirmed RS script. Sorry Pyro
• I havent decided on the time limit yet, since I'm concentrating on getting these marked first. No set date for it to start either. (Probably as soon as the results of this one are released)
• I'm going to put 1 big twist into the competition which i think will make it extremely interesting :)

We could always release all the scripts to those who entered the competition, member or not, without releasing all of them to all non-members.

dan cardin: I'll judge to a certain standard whether the non members deserve the rest of the script depending on what they submit, so that eliminates that problem. Also, partners is old school :p, its something else, but partners could be one for the future.

I don't think the furnaces would be raped. I don't know if you've looked at the current smelters.. but the activity there is pretty low.. A lot of ''leechers'' are still going for money-making scripts like SRM/Ess miner/MCM.

Already a few people have asked me if they could look over my competition script, and I let them.. If other people want to learn, they can always pm me/(or other scripters?)..

Thats true. Out of interest, how many good smelters are there though? + you need to actually mine ores to use a smelter, so that means you need good mining scripts as well. I think thats why they are not as popular. however, as more good smelters are created, i think more people will use them.

Offtopic: Just out of interest, what is SRM and MCM?

Dang, I was looking forward to getting to learn from some of the scripts. I was in France on a foreign exchange trip for a whole month, I didnt get back till July 5th, and it was another 2 days before i was over the jet lag. :\ Went online, and saw the deadline was the next day. :\ :\. Well, do what you must to keep the leechers out. :) I'll try to enter the next one if I'm not too busy with work and my ERC(elemental rune crafter).

nice idea but the one day time limit would count many out as if you couldn't make the day or didn't have 6 hours then you wouldn't be able to enter

Very basic script created, very unimpressive. Scripting standards are bearable, but spelling is appalling. No individuality in the script, i would expect this from most people. No use of SRL, and doesn't even do the job i asked for… Presentation is *OK*; no added extras. No runtime as it doesn't smelt. Handed in after the deadline.

However, efficiency is 100%, even if it doesn't do what i asked.

Awarded: -1/10 (And you're lucky you got that)


Being serious now, I've marked 4/8 scripts; Sumilion has also had a check through all of them and has given me his thoughts as well. I hope to have the results out soon.
