Hey guys,

This is half for fun and half for, you know, saving Bens… $$

SWIM is going to ATTEMPT this: https://www.reddit.com/r/hacking/comments/2bjo0k/hacking_the_progressive_snapshot_obdii_device_for

Any assistance would be nice since SWIM has no electrical knowledge.

Thanks,

I'll let you know how it works. Already have all the pieces…

EDIT: I have a multimeter in inv slot 28

Definitely works. Anything you need help with? Seems like you make an adapter that has a power port plugged into a battery and also connects to the car. Drive a few miles with the adapter plugged in then plug in a battery then take out of car and plug into the wall?

I'll look more into a parts list tomorrow if you need it!

@King,

The only things I have yet to buy is a 9V battery and a battery cap for it. I will probably need help knowing which wires to strip/splice. I have a multimeter so if someone walked me through it I'd be able to figure it out I believe :P

My premium is astronomical because of my driving record. 30% off would save me about $80 a month, thats no chump change when you have a 4 month old full time. (my baby was removed from her mom by Children and youth services)

I'd like to document making the whole thing and get it on youtube or imgur with pics.

I'll look into it today! I've been called into work early today 2:30pm instead of 6:00pm. So it might take me a day, I'll see if I can find any other guides on it to link you.

That'd be awesome. No rush, I'm ordering the final part now.

Using SWIM is pointless.

This is probably illegal.

Good luck.

Under-reporting the amount you drive when you sign up for the insurance would probably count as insurance fraud, but I'm not a lawyer.

I was referring to step 1 from the method you linked:
have or get insurance from Progressive, tell them you use the car for pleasure, with annual use of 500-1500miles per year.

The whole point of getting a discount on insurance is to show them that you hardly ever drive it and when you do drive it you're driving gently. You'll probably miss out on a portion of the discount if you told them you drive 10,000 per year instead of 500. You're much easier to insure (in their view) if you don't drive the car ever. You probably get an automatic discount for saying you drive significantly less than the average driver.

Again though, that's probably the point of taking it out for a short, gentle drive with the meter plugged in. But as BMW pointed out, this would fall under insurance fraud I'm sure.

@King,

I have all the supplies to do this. If you think you can assist me in figuring out which wires to splice over skype that'd awesome!

Apologize about the lack of posting here. I've been dealing with Sythe issues and working extra hours. I would be happy to help assist tomorrow if that works for you? I'm going to lookup a diagram tonight and see if I could doodle it out.

I tried with a buddy to no avail. I think I'm giving up, thanks though.
