Greetings
I'd been wondering that just now. I'll present arguments I'd come up with why Jagex should, and shouldn't, legalize botting. I hope this will grow into interesting discussion with many different points of view.
Why I think botting could/should become legal.
1. Regardless of what people think, people were botting, bot, and will bot. Period. But so far only the most dilligent and crafty can do so very successfully. Those who sell such services earn income, which Jagex could snatch if they presented a paid idle-bot feature.
2. Jagex has the possibility of making an update that would grant 100% ban rate on every single bot. The fact that they hadn't done so, as well as previous public reaction to but nukes (prices rising because far less people were doing mundane labor) brings to mind they need bots.
3. If everybody had access to botting, prices would sharply fall, and no one would have to care about spending time doing mundane labor. And also because of that, goldfarming would take a giant arrow to the knee, because nobody would feel that much compulsion to buy gold and spend it on shortcuts to train skills.
4. There are many reasons to bot, one of them is to not waste time doing boring shit and the second is that some people enjoy watching their character slave away, as some sort of auto-Let's-Play-video.
5. Bots still pay for the game. What's more, is that people also stop playing on a whim (and paying for membership). It's the constant updates and new things that are a major portion keeping the game interesting.
Why I think botting couldn't/shouldn't become legal.
1. Many legit players don't like ideas of unfair advantage, or having a robot do things for them. Some hate botting because of principle, even though if everybody, not only the craftiest, had access to it (more or less) there would be immediately less unfair advantage.
2. The economy would go insane. Not only that, people could get so bloodily rich there would be no need for them to go after any pixel wealth, or feel any accomplishment because of it. Even though it can be offsetted by tweaks, it would lead to the dangerous unknown.
3. Jagex might not legalize it on a principle, however after they practically introduced legal goldfarming, who knows.
4. No accomplishment in attaining skills, because everything would be granted automatically sooner or later, only a matter of time. Could be offsetted by tweaks and exp reductions, but still, dangerous unknown.
5. In case 90+% of bots would get banned, Jagex can always incorporate additonal sources of items. There was an update in the past that made many items available in stores in unlimited quantities, such as feathers.
All that came to my mind right now. I like extremes, therefore either ban everybody, and they didn't, so they should make things fair for all the players and legalize it. All the effort and behind-the-scene two-faced attitude on botting could be spend on setting a new balance in More-Than-Ever-AFKable-RS as well as new content.
However I am just a guy, just a player, not a developer. That's why this is a discussion and perhaps some daydreaming. Don't take anything here seriously, especially it's not our game being discussed :D
Cheers, and looking for responses!
Edit1: added 5. to Couldn't/Shouldn't
