Purchasing Scripts

I've been here for a little while, mostly reading the forums attempting to teach myself how to script and using the free and jr members scripts. But I don't really know why the ability to allow the senior scripters to sell their scripts is not a choice. I'm neither for or against this, but I could see the learning aspect from this as this has been the best way for me to learn is reading others work, also I believe it would encourage more people to script and increase forum activity. Downside I guess I could see the community maybe going to siht or making simba to popular increasing in smart user bans. I'm sure this has been discussed before, a lot I imagine. What is everyone elses thoughts?

Please don't flame or just say because its against the rules.

If you are determined I'm sure you can find someone who will take you up on an offer; It's not like they're going to hunt you down if you come to a private arrangement with someone on the forums. I think the idea is just to keep the pub forum from becoming a cesspool of spam content like scythe and encourage smarter use of the tools simba and srl provide. SMART seems to have stayed off Jagex radar for a reason.

Where you've got scripts being bought and sold you've inherently got scamming. Disallowing selling scripts just makes life a lot easier and the forum a safer place to be.

I'm not trying to purchase a script or anything. I'm just curious to why is all. I feel like it would definitely encourage others to learn and increase productivity as well as activity on the forum. I see how scamming would come into play but if the forum supported it I'm sure there would be ways to develop a safe way around being scammed keeping risk to a minimum.

Buying and selling scripts creates a different kind of "learning" environment than what SRL currently stands for. We're a learning, educational community that happens to use RuneScape - Simba is not an RS Bot. We aren't focused towards gold farming, although we might happen to have some gold farming scripts.

In this current community, Community A, scripts and any other contributions are out of good will, and the enjoyment of learning. People can do what they like with what they learn. You earn your knowledge yourself. You achieve higher SRL ranks via merit and community involvement. You share your wealth of knowledge, and knowledge is shared back to you in return. This creates a wonderful atmosphere, in my opinion.

Compare this to Community B, the buying/selling environments such as Powerbot. The core motivation is money. This can create professional quality scripts from professional, business-oriented scripters, but the vast majority result are rushed, greed-based products and scammy advertising for said products. Someone after a quick buck won't care about customers who get banned since they already bought the script package/VIP/whatever.

Personally I much prefer the positive, safe, moneyless environment than the greedy environment.

I agree with you 100% on this + with people selling scripts, what's the incentive of the SRL (and simba) devs putting their time into SRL (and simba) for free? I'm quite sure it would put some of the SRL (And simba) devs off or at least annoy them a bit since people are making money off something they are doing for free!

I love the SRL atmosphere and wouldn't want to compromise its integrity. I just believe you accomplish more in numbers, with more being accomplished so would the shared knowledge. I also agree with your stand point on community B, which is why most of us are here.

However us users define the SRL community and i believe that weeding out the ones that are here for malicious reasons would be easy to get rid of and i'm sure if purchasing scripts on the forums was allowed there would be requirements that are needed to be met in order to do so. I just think it would be cool to have the choice.

For over seven years, the transaction of scripts on the SRL forums has been disallowed. It's not going to be allowed simply because a few users think it'd be "cool."
We are a free and open-source community. Always have been, always will be.

The benefits you speak of such as "encourage more people to script and increase forum activity" and "encourage others to learn and increase productivity as well as activity on the forum" will cease to exist after the first five minutes, at which time it'll become all about gaining dat IRL geepee.

Because at the end of the day, scripts will be sold for one reason and one reason only: personal gain. Money will cease to be irrelevant here at SRL, which will pose a myriad of new issues for us to deal with.

The "quality control" you mentioned would be yet another problem that comes with advocating or allowing paid scripts. Resources would need to be allocated to set up a script-approval system. Users who have their scripts rejected would become disgruntled and attempt to harm the community.

Support systems would need implemented, a ticket system or a forum section with a dedicated usergroup of assistants.

Paid scripts would be stolen and resold elsewhere, seeing as Simba and all associated components are open-source. A closed-source delivery system (SDN) would be required to ensure safe and secure delivery of paid scripts.

Auth key systems, payment plans, VIP packages. Hell, we'd even need a place for the money to go in the event of a profit split.

Bottom line, it's never happening. It's fundamentally against everything we stand for.

You're free to discuss paid Simba scripts with anyone, as long as it's offsite, outside of Villavu. No one is going to hunt you down and stop you.

Yes this.

@OP BTW anybody can easily buy simba scripts on scythe just as easily as you could on here (if it was allowed). It's a simple system, all the business crap occurs on scythe (aside from maybe the seller PMing you on here to prove they are who they say they are but nothing else)

Exactly, there are plenty of people who create scripts tailored specifically to Simba with the intentions of selling them, they just do so on their own time. I think this is actually a way better structure for a community as opposed to the buying/selling ideals like Clarity mentioned above. If you really need a script made you can find someone either here or on other websites but from my experience they're generally quite expensive scripts.

I still consider myself a villavu newbie (for good reason) but nevertheless… here's my view
If the atmosphere was business oriented rather than educational (pretty much every major botsite that's allowed script selling has overtime become more and more business oriented. just look at tribots quick transformation once 07 came out), people naturally would become more inclined to withhold information in order to avoid losing potential business (ofc in varying degrees depending on that specific persons current interest & capacity to sell scripts). Clearly the veterans of this site prefer having something different, a kind of sanctuary (not literally but imo a good way of describing it) that focuses on education. And thus there is no public section for people to post about selling/buying a script here.

note, I'm not trying to bash on tribot/any other site for becoming more [legitimate] business oriented, nothing wrong with that. Quite simply there's pros & cons with being business oriented and pros & cons with being education oriented. Clearly, as you the op, are pointing out some cons to being education oriented. instead of it being "pay $10 for help" it can be "show that you're interested in learning, for help". Though with a bedrock of any sort of society in the world being mutually beneficial relationships, neither of those are exactly outrageous demands.

And as other have already stated, the hassle of moderating it all definitely takes a noticeable amount of consistent time & effort. Issues such as selling scripts that people didn't make themselves, not updating a paid-for script, questionable practices which the staff here would have to decide on whether or not is allowable (e.g taking pieces/ideas from a leaked paid-for script (not leaked by author) and adding that to your own and then putting that script up for sale),and straight forward scamming (e.g chargebacking payments/not doing something you explicitly stated you would for $$).

I would recommend seeking out a partner to work on scripts with. Providing something of value yourself (being interested in learning and dedicated is something of value that I believe a good number of veterans notice and appreciate) will help you tremendously with finding a partner (or partners).
+ working with other people on a project (rather than by yourself) will help with focusing (rather than say procrastinating and then quitting). That's the only way I can ever do well at school, meeting up with classmates (rather than say getting bored and browsing villavu forums and writing up a post like this. gosh that was specific, mods dont look at my ip :whistling: ) to work on assignments and study for tests.
