Mod Reach

http://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/33dgez/mod_reach/

It is with regret that we have some sad and unfortunate news to share with you. Today, Mod Reach was dismissed from employment at Jagex, following an investigation into serious misuse of moderator privileges. This was flagged to us by system checks which track and log code changes made to the live game. We were able to intercept the intended changes before anything could impact the game economy.
While staff changes are not something we tend to share so publically, when both the integrity of the game and the team are put at risk we felt duty bound to make the community aware of what has happened.
Obviously this unexpected news means we need some time to collect our thoughts and formulate plans for future projects. Once we have pulled all of this together we will of course share and discuss this with the community. Due to the sensitivities of the situation we are not going to be able to give any more detail at this time.
We are determined to ensure Mod Reach’s departure does not detract from the great start to the year we have had. We want both the team and community to go from strength to strength and to take Old School RuneScape forward onto bigger and better things for many years to come.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
The Old School Team

Intresting… wonder if he really didn't affect the economy? (RS3 gold has been dropping massively recently, and there has been some decrease in 07 (though there was also a corporal beast bug))

Well, since the corp beast bug was caused by mod john c I doubt he had any part in it + reach doesn't work on rs3

time to start a botfarm.

Was Reach the guy who wandered around osrs banning bots manually? He was the only one who did bot busting on osrs wasn't he? Could be a big-time opportunity.

Wonder what he did to get himself in trouble, that would be a neat story. Also, if Jagex has to say "I swear he didn't impact the economy" you can be darn sure that he probably impacted the economy or was making a serious attempt to do so before caught.

Conspiracy theory: He had a huge botfarm that he ran to make extra cash on the side and he was using his position to make sure they were never banned and to give them a little extra 'help' when needed.

Nope, that's mod weath. Reach is a content dev who was making a new continent for osrs

I doubt he'd bother with a farm, probably made a way to create gold ingame?

I'm pretty sure that Jagex are incorrect about being able to stop his changes before it affected the economy. This may be the first time they caught him but he almost definitely has done things like this before.

Read this about him and lol'd.
According to reddit, Reach was friends with the people who abused the corp beast bug. Skimmed over what they were talking about, but that much I remember.

It's the same on RS3. Some of the j-mods are very close to bug abusers since they can track their account and find the bugs faster and hopefully before they're abused.

Apparently he was involved in bug abuse before being hired by Jagex, and as a JMod was friends with a few current bug abusers. So a different sort of rule breaker.

Mod Reach? that would make sense, I appologuise if so… I don't know that much about Reach other than what I read today… but he has a good taste in cars (recently bought an Audi R8). Just thought Rj was being stupid;)

IDK why they are hiring these ex rule breakers, it's not like they have any sort of skills that are hard to find lol..

This suggests two things to me:

  • It did impact the economy, or they wouldn't have taken the time to specifically stress the claim that it didn't (as 3Garrett3 said), and
  • Other people (players) were aware / were involved / were victimized / were profiting from whatever activity was going on. Why else would Jagex go out of their way to announce the dismissal of a staff member? Because they didn't want the players to be the first to leak the information.

It was specifically stated (it wasn't really "stressed", merely mentioned once in the original post and one more time [indirectly] in follow up to a question that pretty much everybody's been wondering (of whether or not it had to do with the corp bug)) because they know people would be wondering if it had caused a huge change in the economy.
I've personally been shown some powerful glitches firsthand that're still working (both 07 & the live version of the game) and thus I'm personally coming to the conclusion that it's not crazy to think that the invincibility glitch wasn't on purpose. plus it could make jagex look better if he had been the reason for that glitch (a rogue dev causing it on purpose > poor coding causing bugs) and to just shift all the blame on him.

It makes Jagex (as a company, not the individual devs) look much worse that one of their lead devs was sabotaging the game by introducing bugs so his friends could abuse them than that their QA misses some bugs. Everyone knows QA issues happen, it's just a part of the game. What Reach did shows that Jagex has poor hiring/screening practices or employee loyalty issues.

That being said, I'm not saying Reach was responsible for every bug in Oldschool, just that it seems likely that he was involved in the corp glitch.

if they were so scared of looking like they only hire loyal employees that are 100% "clean" then they wouldn't hire somebody like jacmob (very high profile).

For the same reason large businesses will hire on hackers who broke their security; get rid of the problem, find out how to patch vulnerable piece of security and constantly try breaching the new security.

I've seen examples of this when I was over seas, I had a web design instructor who had hacked into some big apartment business here in the US. Apparently they contacted him directly and rather than punishing him not only did they give him a cash bonus they hired him on to repeatably attack their security and point out possible areas that were vulnerable.

They're killing two birds with one stone; eliminate (one of) the threat(s) and test run new security.

Edit:
Oh yeah, about Mod Reach. It's a shame really, I have respect for the Oldschool Team, regardless of how many accounts I've had banned. They're quite loyal to the game and the community, especially compared to the RS3 Team. So wherever you end up, Reach, you're more than welcome to join our little community here!

Yesterday was just thinking if either corp bug was fake to promote Tribot, which was very unlikely taking into account gold price crash and actual ellys count in game. Or bug was an inside job. Both versions were hard to believe as in both of them would have been better methods of doing so. As i will never believe nobody has checked those 30+accounts killing corporeal at enormous rates. But Reach as head probably of banning staff could have made deal atleast not to ban bots and/or to make a glitch. Making a glitch is less likely, probably he only tooked bribe from botters for letting them continue. I think so because if he could have coded better methods to make some cash for example double drops, 100% chance drops. Well, maybe someone else in jagex is watching of enormous amounts of cash/items coming to game and he didnt wanted to risk so made that bug.

I'm pretty sure that one of the mods posted in the reddit thread saying that Reach had nothing to do with the corp bug. I interpreted their message that Reach hadn't actually abused anything yet, but had used his moderator powers to set up conditions that could be abused.

JacMob was the guy who created RSBuddy (the bot client, as well as its transformation into a game client), so a pretty extreme rule to break and then get hired for. I think he was hired soon after the original bot nuke.

Pretty sure Dan is protected by UK statutes on protecting his confidentiality on what exactly he did besides just announcing his name.

The reason may never be made public.

Also the audi he purchased is of the lower end of audis, what the heck does that have to do with what he did lol, unless ppl were implying he rwtd?

People on Reddit get bored and love to make stories artificially juicy, I guess.

Anyways, whether the "actual" reason for termination gets disclosed, there's a lot of publicly known past reasons that should add up to getting fired already.

3) Mod Reach will of gotten a redundancy pay/gotten out of a contract from been fired which will of allowed him to take the job he's just gotten
